Dear phantom lovers, i do need alot of advise from u guys.here's my situation.

Currently i'm riding a phantom registered under my dad's name. This mth end coe expire(sad). My ideal bike is shadow 400 but sad to say is damn hard to find one nowadays.even can find is like near to 10k for a good condition. End of aug i be taking my 2a test.so if i pass,it means 1 mth i be out of bike. I need it for transport between work n part time studies(u know the rushing here and there).

My Dad ask me to renew my coe and go change all the necessary parts. Estimated renew 5yrs coe is $1200.Insurance around $120. Parts are like new set of fork, front and rear tyre, chain set, timing chain.Estimated cost about $500. So is like total $1820. But not the least...I wish to have a new headlight, wide handle bar, mirror, foot pedal, new crash bar etc...u know those mods.Plus new paint work to black (cos now is marron plus a dent somemore) and the small small rusty parts to change. I guess maybe i have to spend another $1500. So I'm paying like $3200. Engine condition still ok cos regular maintenance done. Wear and tear plus some parts rust cant be avoided.

I went ASP Changi earlier, the salesman quote me a 2nd hand phantom from Toh Guan. COE expire in Aug 2015. He said if I want he can shipped from there for me to view and test. The price is $3200 including insurance, road tax new paint work all do nice nice for me. Almost the same price but w/o mod i wished for. And also worried for engine condition.

So now im rather complete lost. Season phantom knights can enlighten me??haha...tks in advance

Tough decision, but why buy from shop? You can buy a 2004-05 phantom from the forum for 2.2-2.5k.

Also the 2004 onwards models are the newer version, which look better. The badge on the tank looks cool, the round exhaust tip and also the thick fork look awesome.

If your current bikes engine and gear box are in top notch condition then I wouldn't mind renewing COE. But if your engine or gear box would need overhaul very soon, which is quite likely considering its age, I would just scrap it and move on.

bought a phantom ta 200 from my fren in april. decided to renew coe earlier despite the expiring date is on feb 2012.

I renewed my coe in april. cus i predicting the coe will be higher by a few hundreds bucks. of coz the other main reason that I renewed was that I trust my fren. he told me the engine, brakes and tyres were either in good condition or just changed.

I think u just renew the coe for 10 yrs. then when u got money to buy ur ideal bike, u either scrape or sell the phantom. of coz sell at a price that is higher than the money u can get back from scrapping. maybe in 2 yrs time u saw a shadow on sale and you can just scrape it ( if u cant sell it) and buy the shadow. u get back the remaining 8 yrs of coe.

Why risk getting an unfamiliar phantom if the current one's engine is not having any problem. Later the second hand bike u buying got some hidden problem then u got to waste time to send for repair.

Cosmetics wise, u can slowly buy from forum or scrapyard at much lower price provided you dun mind second hand items and you are not rushing to get them. to get the item at the right price at the right time is really damn difficult.

if u dun wan to pay for the paintwork. maybe can diy? i think the easiest will be matte black? just sand off the maroon and spray maybe 3 layers. but i dunno will crack or not la. but probability not as high as you spray lacquer over to get gloss colour paintwork. the gloss paint can easily crack (if not skillful) or due to the poor paint quality which is unable to withstand the blazing sun's heat.

Rusty parts can also spray either matte black or silver. If the current condition is quite rusty just spray all the chrome matte black?

This is just my opinion. Ultimately you know yourself whether you are more of a pro-shadow or a pro-phantom rider. if you know you will change bike once you saved the money or chance upon an attractive shadow sale, then dun spend the money on phantom ba.

bad news for me. 2 weeks ago. gear shaft give way so yup, despite certain overhauls, if u kenna gear shaft problem like me, end up need to open up the engine again. so those that are renewing pls take note of this cost. then when the mechanic opened up the engine, he said that a few things are old already bla bla bla, then u will end up change everything so yup, renew or buy at the price u think its right after adding this potential cost. nonetheless, all the repair cost add up, its still cheaper than buying a brand new bike.

Sentiment or Durability.

If condition is very good, renew and ride it as long as possible.

If its coughing and maintenance is getting higher, it time to let go.

Bro, I dont think it is easy to just scrap and get back the COE. What you get is a COE rebate, which are be used to purchase a new bike. How will it help if you are going to buy another used bike?

I think once you renew COE and you dont want to keep the bike, it is not practical to scrap it in between. You just have to sell it to someone and cut losses.

Oh ****, i didnt read the coe rebate stuff completely. I only read the first part and I just assume I can get back the amount somehow haiz. That means I will just have to wait till someone buy my bike in the future if I am not buying a first hand. If i had read this clearly that time, maybe i will think twice before renewing but anyway bikes such as phantom and super 4 should be easy to sell in the future. just hope that it wont be sold at a price too far away from the coe premium and total engine overhaul + all the chain and sprockets that I had paid. thanks revhappy for clearing my misunderstanding on coe rebate.

I also got to know this couple of days ago. I was about to buy a phantom that had 6 months COE left and owner selling for just 200$. I agreed to buy, was thinking what the heck its only 200$ how much can I lose. Worst case I can just scrap it and if it is good condition then I can renew COE and ride as long as it is good and then scrap it and get the COE remaining back.

Then I did lot of research as to how exactly the scrapping process happens. That also is a bit of a pain, need to send it to scrapyard or let the shop do it for a fee. Although there are threads here that explain how scrapping is done, there is no first hand experience shared by anyone, which is very sad. I had to go and clearly read the One Motoring site and then got to know that wont get COE refund as cash.

So I decided not to buy a bike with COE going to expire soon as I will always be in a dilema if any issue occurs with the bike, whether its worth fixing or not. After renewing COE again dilema as to how much to spend on it, unless I will keep the bike for really long.

Now COE is quite cheap at 1.5-1.6k for 10 years. Good time to renew for 5 years, especially if your bike is in good condition.

I've been monitoring the coe prices to renew my expiring COEs - Oct 2102 for my Vespa & Jun 2013 for Phantom

It seems that over the yrs, it tend to rise after Feb so now might seem a good time to renew..

I personally think this is because ppl r getting bonusses fm Mar onwards so generally new bike sales increase during that period.. however with the economy not looking too good and a couple of companies announcing cost cutting measures, might be more cautious.

So based on historical records, now is good time to renew ur COE!!

But those who have believe on a gloom outlook for the year may want to wait summore..

For me, I'll wait 1 more mth.. if it increases I will renew my Vespa.. if it decreases, I will wait summore..
