ok i got some help from a foreign aprilia rider regarding the tuning. hope it help guys. quite chim for me but im gonna slowly break it down.

Here is a jetting guide that I use to rough in carb settings. Its meant for two stroke four wheelers (Banshee, in particular), but works okay for just about any two stroke.

Top End Jetting: First make sure you have an old set of plugs in your machine (not fouled but a little carboned up will be fine).

Remove your air cleaner and wash it out completely. (Do not reoil it at this point). Put on your mods....pipes ,reeds, carbs, etc.

Remove the snorkel from your lid. (With the air cleaner not oiled and the snorkel off this will be the leanest your machine can ever get after it is jetted properly).

Put in a large main jet (make it large enough that you know it will not clean out on top end at full throttle). Start dropping down in increments of five (if you had a 280 go down to a 275.and so on). Keep going down until it just starts to clean out and rev aggressively.

Get engine good and warm (make sure it keeps on cleaning out on top end). T

Midrange: Get in about 3rd or 4th gear and hold throttle about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. Hold it there for about 5-10 seconds. If you hear cylinder drop out then its lean and you need to lower your clip (raise your needle).

If it stays blubbery but cleans out instantly when you hammer full throttle then midrange is good.

If it takes a couple of seconds to clean out and go then it is rich. If it is blubbery and doesn’t clean out for a few seconds then you need to raise the clip (lower your needle).

Bottom End Jetting (idle): Let it set for a few seconds at idle then rev a few times. If it is a little hesitant it is lean. Turn your airscrews in (go in 1/2 turn increments). (Your idle will actually drop slightly, this is normal.)

If you rev a few times off of idle and it is a little blubbery it’s a little rich, turn your airscrew out (again 1/2 turn increments).

Take your machine out and check all of these again.

Get in an open area and go out and ride for about 5-10 minutes (not at full throttle all the time, just short hard bursts). Start in first and go through as many gears as you can, pulling hard (do this as fast as you can in the least amount of time). Pull in clutch lever and kill machine at the same time.

Remove plugs, the outer ring around the outside of the plug should be dry to ever so lightly wet. The porcelain area should be light tan to light brown (This is almost perfect)

Go back and oil your filter and ride it. Make sure it runs the way you want. Check your plug again, the outer ring should be wet and the midrange which is the porcelain area should be brown.

Run without the snorkel if you can, but in the winter time put the snorkel back on. This should richen it up enough that you should be able to run in colder temperatures with no problems. Keep an eye on your plug. Your plug tells you the entire story of what your engine is doing.

This was covered in various posts in the last month. Basically my plan is to ride out the 34mm and feel the bike and change accordingly rather than getting multiple jets and trial them. The 34mm comes with a default 160 mainjet and subzero has advised on a downsize to a 155 although messa has reported good results on the 158. Messa is doing plug chops as well. And like he mentioned, every bike has her own prime settings.

One takeaway point is learning that removing the snorkel leans the mixture(although we could use another verification or citation on this)

I'll be cleaning out my air filter this week and probably take a look at my carb and valve and clean it out abit if I have time. As well as basic inspections to coolant, engine oil and brake fluid levels prior to the DIY on 20th. So I can concentrate on the stuff I don't know.

I have gathered some references to derestrict our bikes with pictorial references to our cdi. Will cross reference to ensure I'm breaking the correct item.

When the winds resist my impetus and sights become passing shadows. Every other sound is voided, all but the undeniable roar of my engine.

My physical vision recepts naught, but my mind is tranquil.

I see my inner soul.

actually ive never been on 158 mains. Currently on 155, before this was 150 and before that, believe it or not, i was running a 142. I put in the 155 to use as a baseline for my plug chops. Im quite confident that my optimal setting is around 150, but im gona do the plug chops to confirm.

Biggest improvement to my jetting was changing the pilot from stock b40 to b38. Just got a b36 today and im gona pop that in after work.

This manual has good info on unrestricting a restricted bike for the '06 model, even has settings for the jet and other mods to unleash the bike although it does lack the consideration of a 34mm it should still give a good guideline.

Is the 06 model similar to the 07? Feels like a trivia but: In which year was the piaggio cdi(ecu) introduced?

It's great you've been reading up. Few recommendations. Get rid of the air filter. The stock one sucks. I always used to run on an empty airbox. Keep the snorkel on the airbox though. Removing it makes tuning more difficult, although not as bad as pod filters.

Start with stock main jet 160 on the 34mm carb, and work ur way up or down. I wouldnt recommend going below 150. It might be too high at RPMs, especially if you're going to be riding at track.

Changing the idle jet affects fuelling at lower RPMs. You can also change the atomiser. I'm using a 265, as compared to the stock 266. Minimizes the flat spot.

In summary, dont use anyone else's setting. See how your bike is 1st. :)

NO. Get a residue-less contact cleaner or carb cleaner.

Carb cleaners usually degreases everything and leave no residue. You sure you are using the right product?
