in a nutshell, my bike is running rich, best time to ride it is in a cold weather at night...

i'm looking for a mech dat can tune to my liking.... basically now, left to tune my carb, den its all perfect... except for my clutch plates lar, but i can live with dat...

sad to say, i haven't know of any place whereby they mech will tune the carb

nicely for ya with just 1 visit.. if ya'd read thru the past few pages, it takes a lot of

work and time to fine tune a carb..

i dunno whether dyno jet works with our bike.. if it does, i think that's the best alternative..

anyway since ya're able to tell tat ya bike is running rich.. ya shud see the

response of the bike at different rpm.. as different response at different rpm will

signify different part of the carb is running too rich or lean..

with that, tell that to ya mechanic.. he shud be able to know how to set it...

Guys, need your help. I'm closing a deal on this 1997 RS125 and need to know what to look out for. I have concerns over:-

1) Speedo not working - he'll fix.

2) Engine - sounds and goes ok. Very slight white smoke. How to test further?

3) Wierd paint job - bad taste or buang?

4) Shocks - seem under damped. no scratches or leaks on cylinders except slight discolouration at extremities.

5) Loose grips - whole assembly including brake levers move up/down. can tighten with allen key.

6) Rear brake - not so strong a bite.

7) Prev owner hardly use so I suspect only does major service prior to inspection. again how to check for engine condition?

8) Brake calipers are gold/silver, not red.

Are there any other things to look out for?

Other questions:-

1) What are the major differences between this 1997 and the 1999 onwards models? Engine is the same right?

2) How much will a good paint job cost? How much will respraying rims cost?

3) What should I do to give it a good servicing when handed over? Oil, 2T, chain, clean carb, bleed brakes(?), pads?

DeusExMachina has recommended we try a mechanic called Black, who used to service some of the older members' bikes. I'll be looking for him some time this week or next. The Sin Ming Drive address is somewhere in the last 6-or-so pages.

That's actually a very good idea. Few things will make a less-than-honest seller more nervous than a bunch of well-maintained Aprilias to compare his bike to :3P

A point to note... if the bar end balancers are missing or changed I would say it could be partially due to the fact that most of them rust and the paint (powder coating) chips off and they look horrible. Mine still has the originals but I've currently removed them until I can send them for refinishing. I was considering getting aftermarket ones from Motoworld but their not as heavy as the originals so I've decided to clean them up and repaint them.

When I bought my bike it's been visibly dropped (the right hand side is all scratched up, dropped in the gravel at PG) but atleast it's the original paint (well plastics with stickers) so I can tell that it's most likely never had a hard front end impact.

I was also told by Willson at ideal that sometimes a worn bushing in the gear lever can be the cause for bad shifts. I just changed the bushing in my bike and it's HEAPS better.

If the bike looks visibly neglected it could be worth taking it to a good mechanic for a thorough checkup once you've bought it. It could cost a bit but save you money in the long run.

How much are you paying for the bike anyway? The Y2k models (FS/FT plate) are not that expensive these days. Make sure you investigate all options and test a few bikes before buying.

Muser> The BT010 are great tires for road use. They're dual compound, hard in the middle for long life and soft at the edges for cornering. I used them on my CBR600 and loved them.

Bonkers, is the seller the 1st owner? I would say the paint job is impossible to tell 100% if buang, but is likely. Rear brake may need bleeding/flushing. Do the brake calipers say "Aprilia"? Examine the balancers at the ends of the handlebars. They should be long and rounded at the end (check pics of RS125s on the web to see what I mean). Are they scratched or repainted? If yes, that's a sign of being dropped. If they're missing altogether, even more conspicuous. For the engine, when revving to 2.5k rpm, you should hear a loud click, which indicated the exhaust power valve is closing. If no sound, could mean the valve is jammed, but could also means it's broken. Any signs of oil leaks anywhere on the bike? Did you test-ride the bike? Gears should engage smoothly with no grinding noises or false neutrals. Are the gear and rear brake levers bent in any way? If yes, another sign of dropping.

Will the seller let you take it down to a mech for a check-up? That would be best. If can, call one of us down with you.

Basic paint job goes for about $400-$500. Complicated designs go up to $1000. Airbrush goes up infinitely. Not sure about rims.

If you buy the bike, full servicing of all the things you said, including clean power valve, check pads, Personally, I would flush all the fluids since you don't know how the owner's been servicing it. But I don't know your budget. Others may disagree.

Thank you Muser and Axxis,

I have scrutinized the bike and all the parts, down to the balancers and even the foot rests are original. I compared it to many pics on bikepics.com. I can confirm that it's a 1997 model but registered in 1998. Owner is second owner and has had the bike for the last 5 years. Prev owner held it for 2 years and it was repainted under his watch.

And this is where my reservations lie.. the aweful colour. It's sprayed blue and yellow. Rims, forks and even rear footrest brackets are yellow. It's also a little strange that the calipers are sprayed or perhaps discoloured. Bad taste I believe. I cannot attribute it to a crash because the fairings, although painted are all aligned and do show minor signs of a slow release drop, which he admits to. Balancers and levers look stock and so do forks and all foot rests.

I'm heading down this afternoon to look at the bike again. I'll check the 2.5k rpm click. No signs of oil leaks. Gear change is ok.. but I only went round the carpark up to 3rd. I will most certainly want a respray. Probably black with a little decal work. But the yellow rims must go. Either respray or buy 2nd hand replacements. (Anyone selling? CX?) I will most certainly do a full service.

Yes, the gear lever bushing is worn. But the gear lever and the rear brake lever are stock.

For those of you who are worried/nervous about your first track session I suggest the following:

Just come along this Saturday to watch!

It will certainly make you more interested and then will get the motivation to go out and get the necessary gear. We're all nervous and timid on our first trip.

The first time I went I spent only 20-30 mins on the track going VERY slowly. This time I didn't set tyre pressure or anything. Just got on and rode. Basically TOURING the track. I was wearing a leather jacket, thick denim jeans, MX gloves and a full face helmet.

The second time I went I borrowed a set of Dianese leather pants and a set of leather gloves from friends but sadly I never got to ride because my friend broke down on the way to the track so my session ended before it began with me having to go off and accompany him while he waited for a tow back to Singapore. I was so totally bummed! I had even managed to convince my gf to come along with me and after the experience (waiting) she said it was the first and last time she's doing that. =p

The third time I went I was all set and we went for the monthly 3 hour track special. This time I was fully equiped and made sure I set my tire pressures properly with the help of my friends (Roadster). I started off slowly following some of the more experienced riders and slowly warmed up my tires. With each lap I slowly increased the pace. I went out for 2 x 30 minute sessions within the first two hours and then when the 5 lap fun race came around I decided I might aswell enter (it's free and no pressure) and I just started at the back of the pack and let everyone race off infront and then slowly tried to peg them back after that. I came last or 2nd last (not including those who crashed) but it didn't matter. This was the turning point for me.

Though I LOVED my Z1000 I decided I wanted to approach this properly and get a real track bike, a small one and start from there and slowly progress. Now I have the bike and I'm going to learn to corner well without having too much power to worry about. When I can ride this bike well I'll upgrade to a nice RS250 or something similar but I'm sure that will take some time.

I think people in this thread have the ideal 1st track bike and if you've not experienced riding this bike on the track then you haven't even come close to getting the best out of the machine. This thing was desgined and made to corner on a small tight track like PG where top speed doesn't matter. You've got the bike so all that awaits is a short ride into Malaysia.

:)

might be the fuse (if that's what you call the three colourful things, got blue, red and yellow if i'm not wrong)... mine kept blowing and after that all the lights go out...

This is what i do as temporary measure:

1) Remove the fuse (it's on the left side of the bike on a rs125 Y2K)

2) Take a strand of wire from any spare wire cables you have lying around

3) wrap around the metal part of the fuse (just round and round, figure-8, crank course, whichever pattern rocks your boat lah)

4) put back the fuse with wire

5) switch on the ignition

It might work for you lah, it sure as hell worked for me. ;p

This method really works...but after you started ur enginge, is best that ASAP to go to a bike shop and buy a new fuse. When I got my burnt fuse out, all 3 of them are in 10 ampherage which originally MUST be 7.5Am, 15Am and 20Am. So i bought correct ones and replace it back.

The bikeshop that last service my bike is at Eunos Industrial Park(Everbright Motors). Like to chopped ppl $$$ only. So advised not to go there. :nono:

Very well said. Been there and done that. Best is to put up pixes of our own aprilias at track to get the mood going. Pixes say a thousand words.

So is there a headcount on how many Aprilia's going to PG this Sat??

I would like to go if the co. doesnt need people around for the quarter audit.

What time is everyone setting off?

How long is the ride to PG?

What time is the return trip?

Anyone care to fill in the above details?

Most people go through life following the crowd.

Others think for themselves.

They go their own way.
