Why would it be better to use gear oil than engine oil even though the 2 are of similar viscosity and engine oil holds up better under extreme high heat conditions?

Any particular SAE rating to recommend?

HMmmmmm.....maybe thats why I always have problems finding neutral all the time!

Car engine oil instead of motorbike gear oil?

Well, gear oil is a transmission oil, and therefore, to my understanding, has different properties and additives compared with car engine oil. Car engine oil usually doesn't have the job of lubricating the clutch and gearbox and can therefore contain friction-reducing additives to prolong engine life. These same additives produce clutch slippage when used in bike gear/clutch reservoirs. Not all car engine oils contain these additives, but most do.

Why do you say that engine oil holds up better under extreme high heat? Many would claim the opposite, especially when bike gear oils are intended to combat shearing, which is the effect of the gears slicing through the oil and squeezing oil out from between gears.

Or perhaps you were asking why not use motorcycle 4T oil instead of gear oil? If that's the case, the same logic applies, minus the bit about clutch slippage.

I'm using a SAE 75 weight gear oil, which I believe translates to SAE 10 weight for bike 4T and car engine oils.

Oh yah, and I'm no expert on these matters; just sharing what little I know. Personally, I wouldn't take any risks with bike fluids, and would only use the best motorcycle-specific stuff. But then again everyone knows I'm kiasu. Part of the reason for my attitude though is that I can actually feel the difference between gear oil brands with the same ratings.

Axxis, just get the polini kit...since you are only using it as a track bike

I am not a mechanic, I might be wrong. So, please check with others!

I had temp gauges for both gearbox and one in the engine sump for several cars.

On the road and especially on the track, engine oil temps are higher. I am not sure if this applies to naturally aspirated vehicles and bikes as well.

One reason why theres a radiator for the engine and not one for the gearbox, other than adding a transmission oil cooler.

Another reason for longer service intervals for transmission gear oils compared to engine oils. Lower operating temp, oils holds together better=less frequent change required.

No matter how expensive the type of engine oil I have tried, after just 2-3k km, the oil is black as tar compared to the original dark golden colour poured in.

Transmission oils on the other hand never ever reach that stage of abuse

Maybe its just me

Others think for themselves.

They go their own way.

Hey...i'm definitely interested in your arrow...do you think it would provide beter performance than my arrow-inside-milo exhaust? I noe it would give better ground clearance at the very least....

Hi mate, I dont know anything about milo, but after i installed arrow i found out why people say that aprilia got power after 8K rpm. Bike runs better with arrow and it very very light. :thumb:

DIY Session X*

15 May 2005 Sunday

11am - 3pm

Place names below.

Guys, get rid of those clingy girlfriends and get your hands dirty for once. We dont want to hear about any of that SNAG sh*t. (ok, I am a bit of that too) But lets get together and pretend we're a bunch of testosterone-driven grease monkeys dying to take our babies apart with wrenches and that's all we want to do for a coupla hours next weekend.

Clingy-ness is the number one sign of insecurity in a relationship.

Ditch the ***** and ride.

You can always crawl back on your hands and knees and beg for forgiveness later, after some bonding with the rest of the guys... Come on, you know you want to...

Believe nothing you hear; and only half of what you see.

Do or do not; there is no 'try'.

Must...resist...temptation...to make fun of lacrimosae...must not...be tempted by...easy target...must focus on serious topic...

My Broquet fuel-saving/performance-enhancing device review:

I got this on the strength of Lawrence's (lacrimosae's) recommendation, and his claim of getting an extra 20km on a full tank. I didn't recall him mentioning any performance increase, so I didn't expect any. I was only looking for better fuel economy.

I haven't noticed better fuel economy yet, but instead have noticed something else - a very noticeable, undeniable increase in torque throughout the rev range. That's right, from bottom to top. Somewhat similar to running a rich jetting, except the top-end doesn't seem to be compromised in the same way.

And in case you're wondering if I was riding in the middle of a hot afternoon and therefore effectively running rich (intake of lower density hot hair), I was riding in the cool evening.

Fuel is just plain old SPC 98. The effects of Broquet are supposedly more noticeable on lower octane fuel (RON 95), which makes the performance increase even more unexpected.

Strange but true.

Note: For those who haven't heard of Broquet, it's a fuel catalyst in the form of a wire-mesh-covered tablet that you drop into your fuel tank. Costs about $50 from MotorX (230 Tanjong Katong Rd), which sponsors this forum. I'm not related to them.
