Hi just to check withall the SBF users, when you went thailand, did you buy Thai insurance for your bike? if you did where from? did you like buy few days or 1 year insurance?

the last time i went was early this year, i reached kayu hitam at 6am the shops before reaching border in Malaysia all closed, and the insurance shop at the thai border inside the coffeeshop itself closed for good liao. I used to buy from these places but now all not opened.

went into hatyai central found a few shops selling insurance but all for 1 year period, too expensive in the end didn't buy. we only going in 1 week.

Do you know of any other place to purchase their motorcycle insurance for our bikes, i am going in again in november. thanks.

hi mavric,

see this:

Bike Insurance

Legally, you need insurance to ride in Thailand but your Singapore insurance covers you only up to 50km into Thai territory. For travel in Thailand, you need at least the Compulsory Motor Insurance. This basic insurance covers all accident victims for damages caused by the vehicle in respect of life, body and health, but not any damage to the victim’s property.

The preliminary compensation paid without waiting for proof of liability is limited to 15,000B/person for medical treatment and/or cremation expenses. After either party has been proven liable, the full compensation (including preliminary amount paid) for medical treatment is limited to 50,000B/person, or, in case of death or permanent disablement, not exceeding 80,000B/person. If the insured is the liable party, he/she is eligible only for the preliminary compensation.

There are more than a dozen authorized insurance companies in Thailand which offer the compulsory insurance. As the contract is prescribed by the law, all insurance companies basically offer the same benefits and premium rates.

Premium Guide (Compulsory Insurance)

(Rate) 125cc 150cc >150cc

..9 days = 175B 196B 217B

19 days = 186B 217B 248B

29 days = 194B 233B 273B

A more expensive Third-Party insurance covers also the victim’s vehicle. If you want comprehensive insurance coverage, try to purchase a temporary one from Viriyah Insurance. The company has a branch in Hadyai at 6 Jutiutit 2 Road. Alternatively, you may try to get one in Singapore.

Premium Guide (Third Party)

(Rate) 125cc 150cc >150cc

..9 days = 366B 396B 425B

19 days = 472B 516B 560B

29 days = 555B 612B 669B

There's an agency both located just walking meters from Thai custom(next to coffee shop).

hope it helps.

Simon cannot thank you enough for your valuable contributions to the forum and the biker bro's in this forum.

But i must say that i have already went up twice this year, reaching the border around 7am and both trips found that insurance booth in the coffeeshop closed as well as all the shops lining the malaysian road en-route to the border closed.

:giddy:

no shop opened to buy insurance.

I know of this insurance booth you speak of in the coffeeshop. but it was not opened when i went there twice this year, is it a coincidence they closed two times i was there or maybe not opened so early? if so where can i buy besides there?

Thanks

Insurance booth at Duty Free Complex, left side of road between Malaysian and Thai immigration, is opened by 0800 mostly. If smoker can buy cigs there as well at RM49 / carton. Slightly cheaper than THB 60 a pack in 7/11.

RM 1 = THB 10

Best to go border at abt 0900 by then not much tour buses and lorries going in, not to mention school children rushing to school at Bukit Kayu Hitam and along road to Hatyai.

Last note reach Hatyai too early nothing to do except eat breakfast, might as well reach Hotel abt 0930 eat breakfast then go for Thai massage to soothe aching muscles after a long night's ride or if continuing up north massage then ride on lor

BHT 240 / 2 hr cannot find in Ang Mo infested places like Phuket and Samui.

have some questions, what happens if I ride my bike into thailand and come back without the bike? will the thai customs know that I came in with a bike when leaving thailand? pls advice.

Posted

They wouldnt know as vehicle import are done seperately.

But it is imported under your ownership.

but why would u wanna do that ?

It is very costly to import a bike into thailand. Since I live in thailand and I don't intend to register the bike there, I'm considering riding in and keeping it in thailand. I'm just wondering if they have records of the bikes that go in and out of thailand.

Posted

yes they do.

You will need to import your vehicle in, and they will issue a vehicle import form for that

Upon exiting, you must return the import form.

Just checking if anyone has tried entering THA without the usual log card that LTA used to issue. I bought over a bike and all they gave was a A4 paper with all the bike details on. Think because LTA is going electronic but wonder if THA borders will accept.

Posted

the log card system has already been replaced quite a while ago.
