Hello! I have a small question to ask you guys. I got a 3 year old YBR125. Mileage is 86k. Yeah i know its alot. But can i pump V-Power into my tank? Will it spoil my engine or anything, or will it be better? It is because i am afraid the engine might be too old and a higher octane premium fuel would be bad for my engine. Thank you! :)

Vpower in my 1 yr old cars gives faster pickup...and torque...

With my 5 yrs old - Phantom 200 gives the same faster , powerful pickup too.... no doubt about it...

even for a old bike, there is still difference in the power output. could just just slightly. depends on individual bikes.

got to weight your choices. more power over higher fuel consumption.

Upz for vpower. 50 cents more. see no reason not to pump it.

sediments?

even local petrol also have. esp when you pump after a tanker just refilled the station w/o you knowing.

btw, try not to pump if you spot a tanker refilling the station.

Me oso ybr fbd plate. Tried esso 5000,8000, shell 95/98, caltex 95/98. esso: engine sound creamy & smooth. Shell: engine sound very rough, but responsive. caltex: best mileage, most impt, got 12% discount. :) Now i keep to caltex 95.

If you have a YBR, don't bother pumping V-Power. I went to pump V-Power today. Then started the bike, when to ride around for 10km. The feeling there, but not so much. Minimal. I remember from 95 to 98, got big difference. But not for V-Power.

Or so i thought.

After i parked my bike for a while, went back home for a few mins and i started my bike again. And rode off. And i got a shock. The engine sounded very rough like what Roid said. But pickup tremendously improved. Really the difference is there. Very responsive to my throttle control. Many times i kept almost kissing the bumper of the car in front of me when i stopping because when i throttle normally the bike will go faster that usual. The sound of the engine doesnt sound "sickly" like it would with 95. The ignitions were constant and very strong, felt kinda rough but it was fine with me. Just throttling hard you will feel a jerking back motion i rarely feel with my YBR. On my 95/98, when i throttle fully, it would creep up speed. But with V-Power, speed will climb up much faster than it would the other fuels. Two thumbs up for V-Power!

commuter doesnt need such good fuel. v-power burns faster, thus it will give u a lousier mileage than 95.

I tried caltex 98 for 3 months, platinum for 1 month and currently 92. From my experience, a commuter bike can simply settle for 92 or 95 since it does not make any differences. Even it does, I believe the differences is only minimal.

So far my millage had slight improvement ever since my 2nd tank of Caltex 92.

If you would like to pamper your engine, I would suggest you to use better EO and/or change your EO more frequently. :)

The myth of high octane = more power probably stems from racing, where indeed, high compression engines require high octane fuel to maintain stable combustion.

There are lots of articles on the above topic floating around the Internet. Indeed, a commuter bike can run on 92 petrol without incident. Using higher octane fuel on a low compression engine may even degrade power slightly.

However, these days top-end road fuels like V Power contain a lot of special additives for performance (friction reducers according to Shell advertising) and perhaps some special detergents in the mix not found in regular petrol.

They do make a difference in performance especially on the highways. As riders we usually don't have documentary proof (who here in Singapore has a personal dyno?) but there is a noticeable difference in "feel".

If I'm going to the NTUC 2km away then of course I'm wasting money if I use the special fuels.

My question is, do bikes have a "preference" for different brands and/or grades of fuel?

I used to own a 125Z that has best results in both pickup and economy using Esso 2000 and Esso 2T. A friend suggested I use Caltex Platinum just for the premise of better fuel additives and detergents, but while the engine was revving more freely after the switch, fuel consumption increased noticeably.

More expensive does not mean better - according to the above example of a 2 stroke 125cc motor with a compression ratio of 6.5:1 and running typically from 5000-7000RPM on the highways.

Well i am the thread started and it has been for a about a year. Let me tell you guys what is the best fuel for my bike.

Octane 95 --> Most horrible mileage among the 3 types

Octane 98 --> Gives me the most KM per L

V-Power --> Mileage is right in the middle of the other 2. However, the power can be felt drastically in terms of pickup and on the expressways. Sweet.

For my YBR125, 98 gives me the most balanced performance and best fuel efficiency.V-Power is used for seasons when i need to leave the house everyday asap in a short amount of time. 95 is used when i do not really need to rush as i can slowly warm up my engine etc.

But then again, some people are not sensitive to these kind of things and it really depends on the vehicle. For example, on a Toyota Estima, i can feel the obvious difference between the different grades of fuel, with V-Power being the most powerful. However, on a Kia Cerato, no performance difference can be felt. Likewise for different bikes.

PS: My YBR warms up faster when i use V-Power.

Great observation. Since you have the data, would it be possible to convert it into a form like say...$/km? That would really be the best cost effectiveness indicator. I use 95 and get about 24-25km per litre on my 400cc Boulevard, which I thought is pretty good. If 98 provides a better mileage, would give it a shot to see how it performs on my bike. But first, based on your experience, it would be useful to know if the extra cost of fuel is more than offset by the additional distance.

The fluctuations of the pump prices are mostly attributable to the price of crude oil in the markets. Its not a clear cut direct correlation but the trend is close.
