hiya...i've been watching and reading the "Long Way Round" journey that Ewan McGregor and Charley Boormen did in 2004 across the world and am very inspired. to do any journey that takes you through virtually uninhabited and strange places, it is vital that you have the necessary hands-on skills to keep your bike in working condition.

does anyone know if there is a course that will teach these basic repair skills for on-road touring?

thanks for your inputs so far. but i'm sure there's some way to learn about how to make simple repairs in singapore, right? i mean, i see so many people giving tips in this forum...maybe we can organize some sort of clinic or something and everyone can learn?

yes, a clinic to teach using a tyre repair kit, to push start etc would be good.

this is starting to sound promising. can the people who do not mind teaching let me know what you can teach? am happy to then organize a session to benefit everyone. and for people who want to learn, can you also let me know what you want to learn specifically?

best is to email me at: [email protected]

That is an excellent site! Will use that as a reference to see what would be useful on-road repairs that we will need to know when touring. This rules out bigger repair jobs that need experienced mechanics with specialized tools.

I would consider road side repair a more advance stage in DIY.

You have limited tools, limited parts, and limited supplies. Got to work under unpredictable weather, unpredictable place dealing with unknown problem(s) that bring down your bike.

Most of the time you got to take improvised measures to temporary bring the bike back on the road until you can get a proper, permanent repair.

These are the things that I brought along with me during my last solo trip to KL. The total weight of these junk was 7~8kgs as I got to bring extra tools for wheel and tube removal because the bike I rode has tube tyres… of course I don’t carry this in Singapore.. hehe :thirsty:

you are right about that man. it is definitely a time for creativity. still i'm sure there are some things that we can all do to get us out of a tight spot. that is what i'm trying to learn.

by the way, i am also looking for a cheap 4-stroke bike to learn on. if anyone knows or sees any that is available do let me know. it is best if this bike is in bad but working condition...then the learning will be better i think. most of the bikes available on garage sale are in better condition :-)

That's the nicest pair of tyre iron i have seen. Where did you get them and how much ?

Those tire levers are made by KTC, I bought them in Japan Yahoo Auction at around S$20 each. I have some longer (600mm) tire levers at home, the KTCs are only 260mm in length so the leverage is not as good as the longer one but the are short enough to keep in my luggage.

The finishing is really nice, you can use it as a spoon to eat nasi lemak

ok, am reading up on the motorcycle course thingie and will start compiling a simple set of repairs that can be done on-road. it will take me awhile so you will not see anything for a couple weeks. but as soon as i have it i will post here and then we can setup an initial session.

yes yes yes!!! i have indeed read quite a number of the trips people have made here. some are also very inspiring :-) and i do think going touring with a more experienced person makes a lot of sense. however, it isn't going to happen all the time...and even when going together, you may not encounter some of the problems you might encounter when you are alone...that is why i'm thinking of compiling stuff together.

still...i am definitely looking forward to joining some of the trips that are being planned in this forum...very exciting!

No matter how well prepared and how many tools and spares you carry along with you, nothing can make you feel more secure than the "Plan B" gadgets - a mobile/satellite phone, cash and credit card :thirsty:
