Been to 3 mechs so far and they all say my engine sooner or later need overhaul, including uncle chong.

But strange all 3 quote me different price leh

700-900

600-800

900-1200

Different price dono will do what I also dono, don't want wait they dismantle liao then tell me the most expensive price. That's why want to overhaul also feel so skeptical, what they going to change I also dono, or will they just "pretend" to have changed but in the end use back old parts/scrapped bike parts. Personally I like to have original parts uh..

Planet side always been around 400 plus for top end. For me so far so good so I'm not too worried about them. If u want listing of things to be done u can ask Ah Chong to list down.

Also u can also see unique motor website price list. They have different overhaul ranges and also telling u what they do during overhaul. Of course the more u replace = moar $

This really boils down to how much you trust the mech. There could be some control measures you can implement but they are never fool-proofed. E.g. you could ask for them to retain the old parts they replaced out for you to see, or set a maximum value as to how much you would pay eventually etc. But even as I list them now, you can see the potential problem it causes, i.e. mech can easily find similar worn out parts and claimed its yours, or they would have set the maximum amount even though it really didn't cost that much in the first place.

My Gen 1 had a crack in the honeycomb, and I spent 1.2k to replace the honeycomb and all the nitty gritty innards inside. It was a few years back and I was still green. Until today, I am convinced that I was seriously carrot-ed by that shop, even though they retained all the parts they swapped out to show me. I bought the bike originally at $1.3k with 6 years COE left. Its damn ridiculous that I had to pay another $1.2k just to fix a crack honeycomb. Since then, I promised myself never ever to go back to that shop again.

Alternatively, you can rely on the greater wisdom of the internet, to send your bikes to internet "reliability-endorsed" shops. Quite a few for you to pick and some even publish their rates openly in the net.

Ah Chong is one of the few reliable and honest mechs I've come across so far. But like the story of the father/son and the mule, there will always be some who will say good/bad things about a similar issue. I guess this is the risk one has to take when sending our bikes to the appointed mech, or any other decisions in life.

The best way of course is to do it yourself. But how many of us has that expertise or equipment/time to do it?

In the end, your bet is as good as mine. No one can tell you for sure which one would turn out good for you.

Sometimes it is hard, if the mechanic open liao say something spoilt, they know you would repair since the coe is already so much. Sometimes what they quoted is what they foresee needs changing. Workmanship is also very important. We dun want a monkey with a wrench.

Its a risk that you have to take as in every mechanical repairs. A new part may not sit well with old worn parts.

I think with planet you will be in good hands. If it can be ridden just ride. What is wrong that you need to overhaul? The bike got strength, use engine oil or come out smoke?

Could it be that you just got the bike n want everything like new? The bike will never run as smooth as the newer yamaha. What is good about this bike is its reliability n no frills running.

wa ber, i think you hit me right at the spot. maybe ba, bike runs well but abit loud when hit 90, dont dare go above it.

any bike will be loud when u go 90 above wor.. Loud is subjective lol.. More impt is why ppl ask u to overhaul.. must have rationale like worn piston ring high Eo loss etc..

Hi guys, I am new here so please bear with me... I tried to search it but couldn't find the answer on the forum.

Question is this: Can I use parts from a newer, second gen Phantom (those after 2004) in my older, first gen machine (2001)?

FYI, I have recently bought my first bike - Phantom TA200 produced in 2001. Bike is in a decent condition but I would like to make a few cosmetic changes. Previous owner had the bike for years and was replacing various parts along the way but usually with second hand parts. Some of them don't match and some parts are worn out (e.g. seat) or scratched (e.g. mirrors). I am thinking of replacing rear fender, both mirrors, the seat, foot rests, grips and perhaps put on some saddle bags. I am happy with second-hand parts as long as they are in decent condition and match my bike (black/grey). Since I want to change a lot of parts I thought perhaps it would be cheaper to buy another Phantom which is about to be scrapped. I saw one on sale for a few hundred bucks but it's a second gen. Hence my question - would the parts match (except the forks of course)?

Most parts are interchangeable. Except those in relation to starter switch and rear brake pump

Got crashbar? If not shift IU to either Mirror stud or mounting screw (for crashbar). Then you have the whole handle bar to play with.

My phantom's COE is due in April but since PQP for feb is low so thinking of getting it renewed now as the stats show the quota for class D is going to be reduced and hence PQP will only keep increasing. But here is the question; my mind says that I should get 5 years COE FOR $2200 approx and relax but my love for my bike says that I should get renewed for 10 years which will also benefit me in terms of getting some money back, if I plan to sell the bike before 10 years. I believe I will still go for 5 years but want to get the viewpoint of fellow phantom riders.

Thanks in advance.

Coe is cash deposit. Renew 10 years if you can afford it. Even if bike fails for whatever the reason later, you can still refund whats left of it later.

i am thinking of having my TA200 engine to be overhaul. may I know what are all the parts need to be change?

Golden quote "Not spoilt, don't change"

There is no guarantee that even if you tell the mechanic to change the things you asked him to and he will do as instructed. You may end up just paying for nothing.

Hi guys,

Encountered something unusual today. My phantom went dead at traffic light today. When I tried to start the engine. no response at all, headlight was off, no green neutral light, no cranking sound.

I have to push start the bike and it was working again. One thing I did take note, when I throttle, the green neutral light went off totally. It came back on when I released the throttle.

Is my battery dead? or recitifer? How to confirm the problem?

sounds like my previous problem, magnetic coil.

apparently all lights went off, push start only managed to get it start once, after awhile it wont even on. push to bikeshop and changed it, quite pricey thou.

anyone please confirm with him!
