Hi All,

I am sure this question has been disscused here before, its just that I can't get any hit when I search.

So I am about to buy a second hand 400 cc bike and have been thinking of shadow and dragstar.

I wonder which one I should consider.

I have seen two Shadows but no haven't been able to see any Dragstar (used one of course)

So please enlighten me with your comments or related links.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi hi Dave...

Reason to why it is hard to see a 2nd hand dragstar is becuase, most Dragstar owners won't sell them and if they do, it's sold quite instantly...

But that doesn't mean it's better than the Shadow...Both are equally the same in engine capacity and both has it's pros and cons...Either ways, both bikes are wise choices for anyone who want to cruise along the highways...

Good luck my friend..Cheers...

Good morning armofpeace,

Thanks a lot for your comments. As you said nothing is perfect so I am trying to find out the pros and cons of each bike from those who own/used them.

I have so far figured this out:

1-Honda is a very reliable brand

2- I don't particularly like the sound of shadow(the characteristic of honda)

3- I like slightly lower sit of DS (I only try to sit on a brand new one)

I hope by the comments from you experienced people I can easily make a choice.

Cheers and have a good day,

do u intend to modify the bike extensively? If u are into bobbers or old sch looks then the dragstar is a better base bike for mods. Some ppl dont mind the exposed shocks on the shadow ( aka harley dyna frames) but personally i like the dragstar's soft tail frame much much more. the subframes on the dragstar is also removable... this allows u greater choices for rear fenders and various different styling.

I would choose the dragster, reason is the softtail, easy to customise

but why dont you consider the steed? softail look AND honda :lovestruck:

Always ride safely and defensively.

Repair bike cheap and fast,

Repair body expensive and slow.

ahh.. u miss the most inmpt diff between the dragstar and steed.... the steed's subframe is not removable... its an extension from the main frame.. that make it very hard to obtain a tire hugging fender look without extensive modification to the frame... so in that sense.. its not that easy to REALLY customise a steed to bobber specs...

but if u jus like a stock monoshock honda cruiser... then yah.. steed.

I think another think is that Steed / Shadow 400 is chain drive but DS 400 is shaft drive?

Personally I prefer the non tyre hugging rear fender of the steed.

1997 TZR 125 - 1998 FZ 150 - 1999 GSXR 400K - 1999 RX 100 - 2000 LC 125 - 2001 TZR 125 - 2002 CB 400 Ver S - 2006 CBR 929 - 2006 GETZ 1.4 - 2009 STEED 400 - 2016 ???

Riders ride to work. Drivers work to drive.

Hahaha. You all evil la. TS just ask simple question you all poison him with mods.

To answer your query, even though you didn't really ask :p

Shadow

Chain driven

Chain driven more maintenance but less expensive when spoil.

Foot controls more mid

Single long fat pipe

More low end torque, not so much high end cos of the final drive

Can cruise 120-140km/h comfortably

FC appx 24km/l (from memory but I can't member)

Rear fender chunkier

Feels bigger (for me)

Dragstar Classic

Shaft driven

Shaft driven less maintenance but when spoil, more expensive.

Foot control are more forward

Twin pipes.

Not much low end, higher top end cos of the final drive

Can cruise 120-140km/h comfortably

FC appx 24km/l (about same as Shadow)

Rear fender sleeker.

Feels smaller (for me)

Ultimately, they're basically the same. All engine worthy. Best is you go sit and try then you'll know. I went thru the same thoughts when I was deciding for my 400cc. Shadow, Dragstar Classic or Dragstar Custom. Oh yes, there's a dragstar custom. But not many around left so I think you don't have to bother considering it. It's pretty hard to find nowadays. Dragstar Classic you can go Hong Leong and sit to get a feel. Shadow can go Mah Motor. Once you decide just play waiting game for the bike you want :cheeky:

my 2 cents....first consider how long u wanna keep the bike....

from historical trend, shadow easier to let go and fetch slightly higher price.... if u not intending to change in the near future, then there is only 2 things to do.

1. buy the next used bike that come online, shadow or dragstar.

2. dun hang around plasticblackspecs and gang.... cos sooner or later....prob sooner, u will sell ur class 2a cruiser.....and go for a class 2 bike

good luck in ur search.

That pretty true for your 2rd sentance.

some call that virus, some say it run in the blood.

Suspect i become 1 of his victims unknowingly it.

In fact, just get any (dragstar or shadow) that come in your way. (provided engine, paintwork is good, most importantly $ factor) and u will never go wrong.

Im a ex dragstar rider. Love that ride. bring me to places without worried.

How your search for a New Ride? Adriel

well, thank you all for the wise words.

I remembered when I got my 2B just for a hobby of having the license and not to learn how to ride as I've learned that very long ago and nor for transportation as I drive.

It was a bit annoying to get through (no offense to any instructor here) and I regretted it many times during the course and promised myself NEVER AGAIN. I only finished it because I never leave things undone.

And as you all see the story didn't end there:

And here I am looking for a 400cc bike and am thinking I should get a better one and keep it.

BUT I can't trust myself with that...

I may end up selling it after a year and go back to school for class 2.

This is like something that get under your skin (literally). If you got it you can't help it man. You can call it virus :-0 but I call it free spirit! the need to feel the air and the feeling of being a tire-bound bird.

Cheers to all of you and have a nice weekend,

wish me luck to find a good bike :-)
