just pondering....

whats the difference between tubeless tires on spokes rim (eg:- derbi terra 125, yamaha wr125) and tubeless tires on sports rims (eg:- honda varadero 125)?

- weight?

- price?

- easily damage?

- maintenance?

- etc?

thanks for the enlightenment...

well, from my exp with bicycles, not bikes,

i know that spoke rims can get out of alignment.

meaning it wont be straight forever.

while sports rim will stay straight almost forever.

but thats on the context of bicycle rims.

any one with more info on this?

racing in traffic...

Spokes:

Lighter

Tubed = Not good for high speed(160km/h++) due to tube and tire rubbing problem

Weaker than sports rims BUT i never seen a spoke rim break unless accident.

Sports:

Heavier

Tubeless = Good for high speed

Light rims give better handling!

Yes, it's true that spoke rim will lose it's alignment. Truing must be done to fix it.

TS is asking about tyre actually.

anyway i understand spoke rim stronger than sport rim.

dats y scrambler and off road bikes all use spokes.

for sport rim, it depends on the material.

magnesium rims are soft and will spoil (corrode?) over a short period of time.

carbon rim will break instead of bend.

but my sp rim not carbon oso got break before.. haha

spokes is way lighter. price wise definitely cheaper den sports rim.

damage only upon super hard impact. maintenance juz need to change tube often n make sure the spokes dont rust else it'll be weaker. n trust me spokes still can go high speed.

spoke rims need tubes sports rim no need.

tube bust still can change tube but tubeless can only patch or squeeze a tube in also.

sports rim heavier than spoked rimes.

sports rims easier to clean as fewer spokes.

price wise plain spoked rims cheaper than sports rims.

but fancy n colourful ones will costs more than sports rims.

hard landings will damage the spoked rims.

hard landings will not damage spoke rims as compared to sports rims..

if not, why scamblers all use spoke rims for jumps??

if not, you meant those real hard landings/mishaps or even accidents? not even steel rims can make it..

but spoke rims will be flexing during normal usage.. meaning the spokes do actually flex and bends as you use it..

as mentioned, spokes are cheaper to buy but not necessary easier to maintain..

there are tubeless spoke rims available from Alpina..

IMO, if riding a DP kindof bike, best of bothside is to convert one into sportrim (= tubeless tyre) :cheeky:

Afterall, +90% of nail loves the rear tyre only (got two nails thus far since converting it); means it is less hassle to do the roadside patch-up during tour

Yes, spoke do actually flex and more forgiving when taking the bump (especially when going offroad) and lightweight means easier to handle in 'those situation'; except the hassle when it punctured somewhere in nowhere land.

As for sportrim, it is more rigid construction, it didn't flex but MAY just crack instead if using a lot at where it is not suppose to. :p

My road racing bikes has Mavic Open Pro rims. Save for cutting a few spokes do to an over shift into the spokes both (handbuilt) wheels would be perfect still after 2000 miles. After replacing the drive side spokes, it is still solid and true after another 500 miles.

My touring bike has older Mavic MA-2 rims (predesesor to the "junk" open sport??). It has 10,000 miles on it - mostly commuting with 10 pounds over the rear, but also 1000 miles with 60 pounds of full load touring gear. Still solid.
