contrarian if i don't have the time but am willing to donate money to the opposition party in my area, how do i go about this?

Those who risk nothing, do nothing, achieve nothing, become nothing.

Untrue. A misperception that must be dispelled.

They cannot easily find out who you vote for, because all the polling papers that have been counted are resealed at the counting centre (with seals signed by each political party) into the ballot boxes after counting and stored in the Supreme Court vault. They can only be opened if there is a court order requiring this, resulting from a complaint relating to the election.

6 months after the election, they will be taken out from the Supreme Court vault to the incinerator, in a process witnessed and accompanied by all political parties that have contested.

thanks for the clarification b4 no substance myths are being thrown all over the place in this thread

i thinik PAP is doing a ok job, just overpaid.

i agreed. they indeed did a "ok" job. at least singapore in my eyes is a safe place i wan to live in without fear of getting rob or killed.(im not saying it doesnt happen in SG, but its rare) and tbh, u will not die or with no place to live in if u work. & in sg there is always jobs for u.. just that ppl think they are too noble for some jobs and keep complaining foreigners stealing ur jobs.( y i dun see u guys complaining they steal ur job as a rubbish chute cleaner? u think ur bigger and more class than those?)

overall.. this thread is a good one but all i seen now are complains without substances n solutions.

just like wat the oppositions must do to win votes, they must oppose with good reasons and give good solutions.. but of course they must be given a fair chance to prove it.

Do we??? you are not even a singaporean.

I have weigh the outcomes and its on the opposition side, I was born here and stayed here for 27yrs, so were my parents and so were my grandmothers, Noting of today has a single benefit to me, i cant buy a house, i have a degree from aus and i dont have a job even after working as a manager in australia for 6months not even a entry paying job that pays $1.8k.

they build 2 I.Rs here which has totally no benefit for me nor my family or friends, No one works there.

If the opposition is always oppressed, how do we know what they can or cannot offer when a chance is not given to them.

The media is on the garment side, no free press. No Human rights!! for goodness sake we still hang people. Our cpf is being kept and not

given to use when we retire, no welfare no NOTING. SO WHAT HAS THEY GIVEN ME? National service they have given me instead to tell

me to defend this island where a prostitute or factory worker from china is given citizen ship like membership for a dvd shop.

Freedom is important. just look at the fear we have. Everyone is a property not a single entity.

Bro,

nothing relating to this thread but maybe you should stop blaming everyone else and go find a job

@Specs bro, I like got a full-time job like 10months back after being jobless for 2months.. Anyways what made you think i wasnt looking for one? Curious!!! Anyways a no. of my friends are still struggling to get "Proper" work even after 1yr after looking for one, while doing free-lance/part-time work... Tsk Tsk Tsk, Dont jump to conclusion bro.

Because of falling wages, the average local(where foreign influx is rampant and thus average out the income expectations here, pushing locals down the economic ladder, this would kill them cause they got expensive hdb flats to maintain, high cpf contributions, its a squeeze by the balls policy. Foreigners have currency comparative advantage and easy access to the job market here) so thats why average singaporeans have been sidelined for population expansion. Being jobless is the norm nowadays, because employers asking ridiculously low wages with labour oversupply. But if economy suddenly slow down, we would have a vacuum from the over zealous expansion, companies and outlets would close down like wild fire.

One thing for sure, decent jobs dont have, cheap jobs alot in singapore, double confirm that.

nope nope nope.. they dun oppose things just to oppose.. at least whatever the ruling party is doing someone is watching over them(opposition) unlike here... garment wants u eat s.h.i.t you can only ask how much.. they are simply doing things the way the like it.. can we say anything? no.. we can only complain and complain, sadly thats the only thing we can do.. for those who thinks the pap is doing good job and thinks too scare to vote cos opp cos you might get into trouble.. by all means .. its your choice.. just dun make any noise next time you are unhappy with their one sided decision for your family and your life.. remember.. you voted them.

Failure is on the level of nationwide man. Look at US for example, multiple parties? I believe that is what the opposition wants. But look, Obama wants to fix the damn healthcare policy and the republicans are saying he is doing it for personal profits. Lots of these things going around man.

Every election, and time and again, Dear LEEder comes out to tell us that a 2-party system will not work for Singapore.

And his bummy buddy CH Teo then tries to convince as by telling us that the Opposition can't make it and will screw SG up.

And then their lapdog media (Stray Times and Mediacock) will spew it out, headlined.

Gimme some good reasons why a 2 Party system won't work here?

It might not work for them, because it will impede their policymaking that has thus far proven only to

- introduce more foreigners to SG

- Give those foreigners jobs and homes, and ultimately an easy road to PR or Citizenship

- raise housing prices, make things more crowded

- lower or stagnate our salaries

- allow them to raise their own salaries with impunity

Basically, for all that they talk about the good of SG, it is all based on us making sacrifices for their vision.

Sick of it. I want to see something that directly benefits us. Something tangible that we can hold in our hands

Things like

- PRs can't touch HDB

- employment policy forcing a strict quota on foreigners and PRs

- min wage

- lowered public transport costs (Govt absorbs the loss)

- lowered price of public housing (Govt absorbs the loss... again. Why shouldn't they?)

- reduce or eliminate fuel tax

If the Oppos sell this, I'm in.

I'm sick of swallowing bitter medicine while those assh0les raise their salaries. Fuuck that.

exactly... their salaries is sky high... n that Lee HL still claim that their salary system work well in Singapore....

- PRs can't touch HDB.

Then existing HDB owners will complain that the value of their property barely appreciate. Then lesser HDB owners will be able to upgrade to their dream condo, then developers have less projects, then local economy stalled

- employment policy forcing a strict quota on foreigners and PRs

Where to draw the line ? Starhub, OCBC, DBS, all these CEO, even the national football coach are not locals.

- lowered public transport costs (Govt absorbs the loss)

- lowered price of public housing (Govt absorbs the loss... again. Why shouldn't they?)

Then these operators will have very little interest to run the business efficiently, and very quickly the quality of service will decline drastically. For transport, we need to PTC to be with the commuters. Every year SMRT, and SBS report record profit yet they happily approved most of their fare hikes....smell like got kelong there.

I'm sick of swallowing bitter medicine while those assh0les raise their salaries. Fuuck that.

You should go challenge your MP how come he keep quiet when this issue was raised in parliament. Otherwise, make sure this coming election he will be sitting in front of the TV watching the parliament just like us

Question is: Was the value of pub housing supposed to appreciate like wildfire in the first place? This was due to the fact of resale prices being exposed completely to market forces.

Next question: Why should prices of new flats be subject to those market forces too? ;)

4 rm flat: 120K, 5rm flat: 150K. Should remain there. Contractors or builders will be paid their worth. If the flats are selling at a loss, why should that be a problem? Why should the cost be passed to us or be subject to inflation? Public housing leh?

Who takes the hit? Gahmen la. Draw $$ from where? Public funds la. Why pass the cost to us?

They can increase their salaries. Then before election they can talk cock give us dunno what Growth Package that "cost them 3.2 bil bucks"...... Why not take that 3.2 bil bucks and use it to offset HDB losses and sell us the flats cheap cheap?

Give each person $700 for fuuck?

Here's the bottomline. If they had kept housing prices in check in the first place. If they had used the money to subsidize the flats in the first place.... then they wouldn't need to spend $3.2 Bil now to buy our satisfaction/happiness. We would be happy with them, and would probably welcome them another term.

Why try to bribe your way out of screw ups? Fix the bloody problem instead.

Where to draw the line ? Starhub, OCBC, DBS, all these CEO, even the national football coach are not locals.

That's why I said quotas. Just go by percentages or numbers. If they draw a 80-20 local-foreigner quota, then the employers will have to decide who to hire for which post. Doesn't matter if the CEO is from India. As long as 80% of the employees in the organization are locals.

There is still a measure of job protection for us.

Then these operators will have very little interest to run the business efficiently, and very quickly the quality of service will decline drastically. For transport, we need to PTC to be with the commuters. Every year SMRT, and SBS report record profit yet they happily approved most of their fare hikes....smell like got kelong there.

Simply put, they shouldn't have privatized public transport. Put one state run bus service, run it cheap. Run it good. If the Govt prides itself on efficient delivery, then quality won't be a problem for the state run PT service.

Let the private operators compete. They can either justify higher fares by better seats or service standards. Or they can simply fall out. Why can't this be done? They pretty much did it with NTUC Fairprice after all. Where are the little Econ Minimarts now? ;)

You should go challenge your MP how come he keep quiet when this issue was raised in parliament. Otherwise, make sure this coming election he will be sitting in front of the TV watching the parliament just like us

Your vote is secret. The best way to see and understand this for yourself is to become one of the counting agents at the counting centre! See how the boxes are opened for counting, then resealed after that!

Step up and become a Counting Agent now! Your role is to watch the elections officials count the votes and to make sure that they are fair. You will be at the counting centre with the candidates and the election agents, and other counting agents. Contact me and I will arrange for you to be a Counting Agent with Team NSP.

Is My Vote Secret? Yes.

The secrecy of the vote is a major concern of many Singaporeans when it comes to marking their ballot paper in the polling booth. Despite the repeated assertion that voting is secret, this myth is still current on the minds of many voters leading them to err on the side of caution and cast their vote for the ruling party for fear of reprisal.

In Singapore, elections are held freely and fairly – although one may argue that this exists only in the limited sense of electoral procedures. While it is true that there exist several challenges to the opposition from mounting an effective and meaningful campaign, the voting process can be said to be fair and transparent. The Singapore Election’s Department is an independent and fair assessor of the elections. Its role is to merely facilitate the electoral procedure in a non-partisan manner and not to keep records of the preferences of individual voters. From the polling booth to the counting centre and beyond, your vote remains secret and your identity is never revealed.

For clarity, here is how the polling process functions:

1) At the polling station, each voter will be summoned by the election officer by name and NRIC. This is to ensure that the identity of the voter is verified and that there is no voting by proxy. The voter will be issued a serialized ballot paper (which acts as a prevention against election fraud) and will proceed to a ballot booth to mark the ballot paper in full secrecy. Thereafter, the voter will proceed to place the ballot paper in the ballot box which will not be opened.

2) When polling ends, the ballot boxes will be sealed with tamper-proof seals which will be signed over by the candidates. The ballot boxes will be transported to the counting centre where they will be opened in full view of the candidates and consolidated into a common pile. The votes will be counted by precinct, and counting will be administered by election officials and supervised by counting agents. The counting agents comprising of representatives from the different parties will step in and make their case in the event of disputed votes.

3) Once counting is completed, all the ballot papers will be consolidated and sealed in the ballot boxes with tamper-proof seals. The ballot boxes will be transported to the High Court vault for storage and nobody will be authorized to open the ballot boxes without court order. Thereafter, the ballot boxes will be incinerated six months later in full view of the candidates from the different parties should the election results be undisputed.

As the ballots papers are counted by precinct, it is true that the ruling party will have a record of the electoral performance for each precinct. However, this information is used to gauge the level of the ruling party’s support in a precinct, and as an extension, their popularity in different wards. There is no information kept on individual voting patterns and you can be assured that your vote is absolutely secret.

How you can help the opposition parties during GE 2011

[Note - the same applies to the PAP. But given my inclination, I'm not going to do more advertisement for the PAP; media is already doing a good job. Contact information below are therefore limited to only opposition parties.]

Nomination Day

You can serve as Proposer, Seconder or Assentor for the candidate. Each candidate / GRC team needs 1 Proposer, 1 Seconder and 8 Assentors. You must be a voter registered in the same Electoral Division the candidate intends to contest in. That is, if you are a voter registered at Ang Mo Kio, you cannot nominate a candidate contesting in Hougang.

Commitment - You must be present at the the designated nomination centre for that constituency on Nomination Day.

Voting Day

You can serve as either a Polling Agent or Counting Agent for the candidates.

Polling Agent

Each party can nominate its own Polling Agent to be present at each Polling Station. You will be checking the identity of the voters turning up at the polling station and to ensure that polling is done properly at the Polling Station.

Commitment - 2 to 3 hour training and half or full day on Polling Day (depending on available manpower).

Counting Agent

Each party can nominate its own Counting Agents to be present at vote counting. You will be present with the candidates to ensure that counting is properly done (there are protocols that must be observed). You will also be called to resolve disputes over ambiguous votes. You will witness the sealing of the vote chits in the ballot boxes after vote counting is completed.

Commitment - 2 to 3 hour training and several hours from evening until counting is completed.

Outreach & Campaigning period

Each party will need lots of hands for its outreach programme. The activities are varied:

a) Hand out flyers

b) Put up posters

c) Speak to voters during walkabouts

d) Organise various aspects of rallies (book rally site; book tents; set up booths etc etc etc)

Basically when campaigning kicks off, it's all hands on deck and manpower is needed all around. You can offer any amount of time you wish. It can be a one-off 1 - 2 hours. Any help is appreciated.

Commitment - up to you. Please speak to the campaign coordinator for more details.

Donations

The parties will need money to carry out its activities. Printing flyers, posters and newsletters need money. Booking rally sites need money. Setting up tents, renting PA systems and doing up backdrops for rallies need money. Even something as basic as providing water for helpers during events need money. If you can, please help. Political parties can accept donations only from Singaporeans.

I posted the short neutral version, I believe Singaporeans are not 'stupid, lazy ingrats', scared maybe, but hopefully not stupid. My aim is to dispell this myth so that all will vote without fear and stop sg voting like a moron for the past 40 years!!!
