hey guys, if u see a rider on kup kia (with a box) wearing a FF, what would u guys think?

at the end of the day, better to look a bit funny while being a lot safer, than to look very stylo while being very unsafe.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

if im on a tight budget and my only choice is between the cl-st and the mhr, i will choose the cl-st over the mhr anytime.

i see. well like we were discussing in the other thread, given only those 2 choices, i wld personally pick the snell mhr over the cl-st, coz i have more faith in the snell badge than a brand badge. but to each his own.

yeah i'm talking strictly full face. mhr actually does have helmet models with dot and snell.

in the interest of my original topic about 'affordable' helmets, i want to share the following two articles, each a review of 2 particular helmet models found in europe/US.

http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/nitro-helmets/

http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/zox-helmets/zox-azuma-r.htm

both these helmets are in the low-price category in the US, and both their reviews show the website saying they are amazed by how good they are relative to their price. and they come with various dot/snell/ece badges.

after some research, i found out that these helmets were manufactured by a Chinese company called Jiangmen Pengcheng. and then i found out this is the same company that manufactures MHR, under the 'MHR' name.

and then when i looked closely at the 'Nitro N1200' review (the first article), i realized i was looking at the exact same super-common MHR full face that was sold by places like Chiap Lee and HKL up until a few years ago. some of u might recognize it as well. and that helmet, complete with ECE safety standard, got good reviews from this website. apparently many models of helmets by this Jiangmen Pengcheng manufacturer is bought by various other american/european brands around the world and re-badged to be sold under their brand name.

i suppose some ppl are gonna knock it purely for being made in china. heck Nike is made in china. and this unknown chinese helmet manufacturer gets its helmets passing dot, snell, ece and british acu. look up Snell, u will find 'Jiangmen Pengcheng' being listed with several models under its name.

ok, so ppl are still gonna slag it for being made in china. but i maintain right from the start, our shops need to continue selling these low-end models, particularly if they're passing dot, snell and ECE. our local biking community will be all the better for it.

i have to admit i am biased against MIC products not all but towards certain category of products... helmet and safety riding gears are one of those in the 'biased' category.

much as like to see branded helmet manufacturers making low-budget quality helmets. unfortunately we don see the top brands in the market making this a trend apart from HJC.

anyway, the 2 helmets you mentioned, they are really old models, more than 3 years ago infact.

one more thing i like to highlight to ppl before paying and taking the helmet home, you should take out the inner liner and see the month and year of manufacture.

My FG-15 has a sticker that indicate month and year of manufacture underneath the inner liner.

if the helmet is more than 2 years old from month and year of manufacture, best not to buy the helmet.

Some merchants will try to push old models of helmets to customers, helmets that have been kept in their storeroom for god knows how many donkey years...

helmets have a shelf life if you are not aware of it... the Styrofoam shock absorbing will deteriorate with time, same goes with the material used within the helmet.

the 2 helmets are examples of how, globally, u can get a dot/snell/ece helmet for under S$200, but we just dont see such helmets being sold locally anymore. i dun mean to suggest u shd be buying 3 year old helmets.

the manufacturer, Jiangmen Pengcheng, has an updated line-up of helmets marketed under 'MHR', 'L2R' and 'Nuvo' (but still listed under Jiangmen Pengcheng in the snell list), some of which pass dot/snell/ece regulations exactly like the old model in the example i gave. they're not imported and sold locally.

if only local shops wld bring them in, we might see more riders subscribe to full faces.

and yeah well i'm not gonna argue abt ur MIC opinions, but when we look at riders wearing open faces made in heaven-knows-where, those under S$200 MIC FF with their dot/snell/ece is a huge safety improvement. thats my point.

this i totally agree with you bro. a low-priced FF helmet beats a open face/half-cap anytime...

you see those hardcore cruiser lovers... the half-cap.. aiyo... worse than open face la...

i understand they dress for their ride la... but hey, dress for the fall not for the ride... when you fall, you gonna get hurt not the machine...

the advertised retail price is $250 but supposedly they're 'clearing stock' so u might get slightly cheaper but that one u'll have to go there and get a proper quote urself.

Any good lock to recommend?

take it with you, do not lock it onto your bike... just a slight inconvenience to bear if you invest in a good quite expensive helmet.

this is a great thread i happened to chance upon. ogk was mentioned earlier - i think it's a fantastic budget helmet as well & another plus pt is that it's made in japan; not china. it's also psb approved but that's irrelevant. unfortunately it's not easy to find in sg since i believe only 1 shop carries it. ff4 solid used to cost only $200 a year ago, but i guess everyone's stuck w $300 ff5 these days

i hook it up to my bike's helmet holder, then i use a short bicycle chain through the chin guard and passenger foot peg. never had any of my helmets stolen, altho admittedly if i ever have a shoei or arai... i'm really not sure if i want to leave it there coz the brand alone might tempt thieves. but i've never had problems with all the FF i've had so far.

typically thieves will either cut or burn the chin strap to set it free from the bike. this is quite common in fact. the bicycle chain completely prevents this. of coz u might still have some 'pro' thief with the tools to cut thru the bicycle chain cable, but these kind of 'pro' thieves are more likely to go for expensive bicycles which they can easily re-sell rather than a helmet. and besides i have not yet heard of such a 'pro' thief cutting through that cable just to get the FF.

as for brand, i use an 'oxford' brand with just the perfect length, which came free with one particular issue of 'Fast Bikes' mag. mebbe motorworld might sell it coz they carry a lot of 'Oxford' products, but i'm not certain. in any case, so long as its a standard metal cable bicycle chain, i think a thief who can cut thru that cable or pick the lock can do so regardless of brand.

I'm going to get my FF this evening if the bloody salary is on time for once.

Leaving it on the bike overnight is probably a big no no. I don't have a top box either since I want to keep the bike light and efficient. With top box I will tend to dump everything possible in it.

Increase in safety factor also carries with it a whole new attitude :D

Quite surprised to wake up this morning and the Toa Payoh gang also talking about FFs. One of them got an OGK for $90. Where!?

i believe that $90 helmet is a OGK Aeroblade... a very very heavy FF helmet... and it's 2nd hand...

the CL-ST we have been talking about is from HJC. Motoworld having a promotion currently, whenever you trade in any used helmet in any kind of condition, you only pay $100.

if not trading in? $150.

er... you sure that is light?

when you try FG-15... you say wow... so light...

when you try R-PHA 10... you will exclaimed "omfg! unbelievably light!!!"
