hi all, would like to ask a question. do you guys still practice running in? like riding below 60 or 70 or 80km/hr for the 1000km. i hv read, n there are different views n opinions on running in. some dont care n just whack. saying engines nowadays don need to run in. but why manuals still advice us to do proper running in?

1st time buying new bike...so dont wanna screw the engine up.

Class 2b, class 2a or class 2?

In most bike, the first 150km - 300km is the most important part of the engine breaking in. Thats because the piston is very new. Hard acceleration and high rpm no go. Some people don care and just whack the bike could possibility think they are not going to use the bike for long. Might as well whack it hard now. If you are very worried, don listen to what people are saying and follow the manual. Since we do not design and make the bike. It was the engineers who wrote and published the manual did.

mine's a 1500cc bike. so ur opinion is to do slow running in? n also the manual says to change the EO at 300km. tot only when 1000km.

Ah...class 2 bike...1500cc....goldwing? Remember my first post about the 150km-300km. Thats the important. Now it leads to your next question about changing engine oil at 300km. thats the one i am talking about. After the first oil change at 300km, good to go till 1000km. Try to avoid hard run in if you wants to use the bike for long long time.

Running in of class 2 bike involved more of RPM and flipping of all gears instead of purely speed. Look at your manual again, it should says

before 1 oil change, rpm must maintain below x digit

after 1 oil change before 2 oil change must maintain between x digit and x digit

after 2 oil change before 3 oil change must maintain between x digit and x digit

then you are good liao.

For example my concours

1. must maintain below rpm 3.

2. must maintain between rpm 3-5.

3. cannot exceed rpm 6.

Dont worry about low rpm, for class 2 bike, rpm 3 at last gear already can let you maintain 90-100km/h on the road already.

bro...sorry...not 1500cc..only 150.hehe.typo..its only a small 2b scooter. dont even hv the rpm meter. n don even hv gears to flip. hehehe. [aiseh.

ok...in this case, i shall go for 300km oil change.

If its scooter then you should not worry alot liao. Its meant for relaxing ride ma. Enjoy riding. ^_^

Remenber DONT whack the throttle to do fast acceleration la

ok noted. might hv been guilty on the fast acceleration ...but only a few times. relaxing ride is relative...for some 100km/hr is relaxing, like my previous x9. but for this small little thing, relaxing ride is really relaxing. hehehe.

Do it mototune USA style. (google it!) It does work to give you superior piston ring sealing and the benefits of greater performance and economy. Makes a cafe racer out of an ah pek bike :D

Basically you have to "exercise" the bike by varying the revs and continually shifting gears. Always warm up the engine properly first before exercising and refain from revving the bike while at a standstill. Go Lim Chu Kang and exercise every day. You'll feel the power available get higher and higher!

Factory style gentle break in is to play it safe and minimise possibility of sub-standard parts failing. A hard break in if you know how to do it without destroying the engine, yields great dividends. Compare well exercised bikes of the same model with gu niang ones and you'll always fancy the former option.

another tip is change the oil as frequently as you can. The most wear comes in at the first twenty miles. Mineral oil is preferred over synthetic as syn creates a protective film on the engine parts. But at this stage the more friction you have, the better the piston rings will hone to the cylinder wall. Cheap oil - change often, get rid of your metal shavings and other crap generated while running in. I switched to semi syn at 2000km and full synthetic at 4000km.

The engine does not give me any problems now at 15,000km of hard and fast riding and is receptive to DIY modifications to increase performance including forced induction, super lean mixtures and water injection. I lead and/or escort class 2 convoys (over short distances) occasionally and need the boost!

Try this on anyone elses' bike = overhaul many times a year :D

gd theory also. so now i'm stuck... hehe

dont worry so much la....In singapore, hardly anyone rides a bike for more than 5 years. Passion is gone and crave for new toy starts. Just take extra care for the first 300km. Anyway whats there to speed and race in Singapore road? Soooo dangerous....Even though there is nothing to see. All the trees look the same. No funny man or woman. Look at drivers, they look back and laugh to see you bake under the hot sun. Look at riders, they thought you wanna race with them. Look at TP, he thought you have something to hide.

Ride to enjoy the good life that you can own a bike to ride around the country. ^_^

hehe...gd perspective. anyway i don ride fast la. only 90-100. everyday heavy traffic. wanna ride faster also cannot. now small bike, even more difficult.

For me, if i had a new bike or car, i would do a slow run in. The engineers didn't anyhow write the manual for fun.

i just recently changed my piston, piston ring and gasket and rebo my block, riding cbr150 now, was told not to go beyond 80km/h, as bike is running in, and was told to maintain that condition till bout 800-1000km?is that true?can give me an insight on running in...

I got a new R15 in January. Followed instructions on the manual to the letter. Bike's doing well so far. I've considered the hard run-in method but it sounds like you have to know what you're doing. It's my first bike, don't dare to anyhow whack, so I guai guai do as the manual says :D

The run-in is a good way to get used to the bike's performance and if you've changed parts it's a good idea to go slow, get used to how the bike performs in different rpms.

@TAJ: I think the 1000kms is a safe number. I think most new bikes run-in period is around 1000kms too. Take it easy and enjoy your renewed bike la.

@ TAJ: do u still have your bike's manual? follow wats stated inside. no1 will know better than the ppl who design & manufacture it. changing piston is the same as ppl running in a new bike. running in is required for new pistons. (short story as u can find alot when google for piston) do not rev hard on your throttle during run-in, juz pick-up slowly & try not the jam brake. i did 1000km for my spark & 2000km for my sw.

@Psy: yea, juz follow and do wat it says. sometimes u oso have to find out the real facts as SOME manuals are for majority/internationally. for eg, the grade for engine oil is diff from a EU country from sg. some may use 10W-30, 10W-40, 20W-50, etc. juz find out when in doubt but most part in the manual are correct.

we try to do & give wats best for our bikes as we are the 1 riding it, not others. endure for awhile during the run-in and u can probably enjoy the ride for many years. of cos u oso have to change the required oils at the correct milleage/time.

juz my personal opinion

im now still at the 600km mark and im still running in my spark. i occassionally rev abit but not rev hard lah. Just trying to keep the engine rpm low while idling. im trying to familiar myself to the bike and sometimes I go about over 70 but not beyond 80 mark unless Im on the expressway in which at most I keep at 90 to 100. Coz I realised going 60-70 is abit road hogging coz i got cars behind me sometimes horning and high beaming me...would this way damage my engine?

I know whats done cannot be undone but if it does damage my engine then Ill just maintain at 60-70...

Won't spoil one, you are well within your engine's designed performance range.

Don't be afraid to rev the engine a bit during normal riding, from experience a bit of whacking helps your bike to get maximum performance later in its life.

What will cause damage are things like opening full throttle on the NSH on a brand new bike trying to see its top speed. That one does no favours to 'running in', and it's what the conservative "slow running" period hopes to avoid. Once you know how the engine works and how it's designed, no need to be so conservative :D

Recently changed my piston, piston ring and gaskets, used fully synth EO and 2T. Did not go at 80km/h all the time, sometimes 100-120.

So if I did not do running in properly, what do I need to change so I could redo the running in?
