When comes to home essentials or groceries, where do you usually go to for shopping?

Which supermarket actually offers the best deals?

If others, please specify.

Maybe I start off with my own opinions first.

I would actually prefer to shop in NTUC as the price SEEMS ok (didn't do much survey around).

I can earn my linkpoints there and get rebates.

NTUC is abundant in the market outside.

Maybe once in awhile I'll do some heavy shopping at Sheng Siong to try my luck for the Sheng Siong Show lucky draw. 百倍!百倍!(100X! 100X!)

I like to do grocery shopping in Fairprice because there is one near my place and I can use my credit card there as well as collect linkpoints.

Toiletries, it's cheaper to buy them outside of fairprice at those toiletries shops. The prices can be so much cheaper.

Yeah, alot stuffs actually much cheaper if you go to neighbourhood market places.

For example, sometimes i would go chinatown to shop for certain tolietries. And yes! SO MUCH CHEAPER!

That is, if I got the time and pleasure to travel to do shopping.

But if I got one whole list of items to buy, damn, I think it's easier to visit a hypermarket. HAHA.

Nowadays no need to go to Chinatown to buy the toiletries lah. Unless you are in the area, else it's wasting time and money because other places also got such prices.

I mostly gave up on NTUC and now shop for groceries at either the neighbourhood market or Cold Storage. NTUC stuff may look cheap but you get:

a) sad looking apples that look as if they've been sitting in the warehouse for too long;

b) battered vegetables that are only good for stews;

c) vegetables that are cheap because they're from CHINA.

I only go to selected NTUC branches to buy organic products and olive oil (this specific brand only carried by NTUC Finest), usually when I have NTUC vouchers to spend.

At Cold Storage, I can use credit card to pay and earn dividends :)

I never go Sheng Siong. PUI PUI PUI!

For toiletries I go to Chinatown. Otherwise just keep your eyes open because some of those beauty shops in shopping centres will hold sales now and then.

The question is not of preference but of convenience.

If I've got a Shop&Save 2 blocks away, why would I want to take a bus to the nearest Giant or NTUC?

Price difference is typically not significant enough to take the extra commute. Freshness of produce? I'll make do with it.

Depends on my location and what I need and how well the item can travel.

I do sometimes purposely seek out the cheapest item to buy....but then, thats limited to how well it travels and what time I have, regards to bringing the items home.

Eg. I buy ice creams, only when I know I can get those ice creams, at the place I goes to, and I timed myself to get those home before a certain timing.

And certain items, you dont get at your neighbouring NTUC. So you will go further or other places.

Also, Seng Siong tend to be cheaper in bulk (I dont understand why they have to break out some items individually though). But buying from them, you need a car to haul the things home. Eg. Cartons of beer.

I once scour the whole island, all the supermarkets/hypermarket, just for a bottle of pump nozzle bottle of Mama Lemon dish washing detergent.

I like the Cold Storage @ Great World City. They have that self check out counters. And they got this board thingy where people post up adverts to let go of their 2nd hand stuff. Interesting reads sometimes.

Holland Village Cold Storage! I love the selection of fine packaged foods, the cheap and wide variety of pasta, and the fact, they are open 24/7!

I used to manage one of the restaurants at HV so the supermarket's manager loves to disturb me in the wee hours of the morning :p

You must be kidding! Or during that time all housewives heard about some hike in mama lemon and start to hoard up mama lemon?? HAHA

all in all i should say NTUC has one of the fair pricing. Guess thats why they call fairprice.

Can choose from Mustafa or Carrefour too as they are hypermart. One thing is that Mustafa opens 24hrs. Thats when shopping at wee hours is good in weekdays.

Anyway, how do I use my NTUC linkpoints in fairprice? I always accumulate accumulate until expired...

How much are the points worth?

You can redeem them for cash rebates at the counter. I think it's 150 points for $1 rebate.
