Hi all, just joined this forum not long ago. Would like to ask around how many months to get a 2B license cause I just enrolled only. Second is i would like to ask about scramblers bike ranges. I heard that 2nd hand 2B scramblers usually have a lot of problems is that true??

Hope to hear some advices! thanks alot:P

Scramblers -

They benefit from the commanding riding position and punchy torque (plus you can always go learn off-roading!). Better than normal acceleration, from a shorter gearing typically.

The downside is of course when we run them on the highways. The lack of aerodynamics, plus the short gearing means a higher workload on the engine. It's the same case with the knobbly off-road tyres having a high rolling resistance. Perhaps this 'high speed strain' factor contributes to the scrambler's reputation for high maintenence but with proper care and due diligence (play within your bike's strengths, don't go wide open throttle all day), I believe they can be made to last as long as you care to remain in Class 2B. Scramblers are very tough bikes, especially compared to some of my favourite 'plastic' lightweights, just take care of the engine and drivetrain related components.

Of course, maybe one could chop the forks down and give it a longer gearing, put road rims and tyres, (supermotard style) but... why buy a scrambler to run on highways (unless you really have to ) :D

As for buying a scrambler - mayhaps poke around in the SBF scramblers section, and also don't forget the used bikes in Garage Sales. Should give you a rough idea if you want to arrange viewing of a bike online. Usually cheaper and more honest than going to a shop, but you need to know to do a proper vehicle inspection.

I learned the other day it's possible to take over a bike with really nice exterior and crap interior (engine, etc).

And a nice performance tuned sportsbike......... with non functional brakes.

So for peace of mind, take in consideration a first-hand machine too. Especially if you regard scramblers as the high-maintenence type, but love the commanding riding posture and height, take a new one for added reliability!

TS, you got money or not? I was also like you, i wanted scramblers. Until i realised they cost alot. Oh well.

Not sure about the expensiveness - have met young gentlemen who buy secondhand then spend a lot overhauling, accessories, performance parts, until the total damage is much more than a firsthand. Quite impressed with the spending power.

Might as well get the firsthand to save the overhaul? Plus no need inspection for 3 years if bought new, I heard. That means can play for a while, before dekitting. By that time changing to 2A already.

Its expensive, no doubt. You try to find a 7 year COE left 2B scrambler for below 2k.

Sorry all,was busy with my school stuffs as school just started kekeke.

I havent buy my helmet yet -_-. And a lot of my friends told me not to use BBDC's helmet as it smells. They referred me to 'Ah Boy' or something.

@pandora - Hey, thanks for your info! Really appreciate it. Yes I was thinking about the highway dragging gears too. Lol, currently i have a few choices that is x1-r,Gilera runner, and a scramber maybe KTM EGS 200/ Yamaha WR200.

@crazydj: Nope, i'm not atas type. I work part time and earn it myself, save etc. So I'm hoping to find a bike that I can pay by installments. So a question i was wondering what if I want to buy the 2nd hand bike from owner but he doesn't allow installment, any ways to find besides loan from related people??

Havent start anything in the BBDC yet -_-

Edit*: So you guys know the location of that place to buy the Helmet ?? Hear its around Bugis but know nuts about it cause i seldom travel to town

Sorry no offence, but are you a guy or girl? I see before BBDC got girls use the 125cc(i think) Honda Sonic bike instead of the standard Honda Megapro 160cc bike due to its lighter weight, suit a girl more. Not sure if girls can opt to take that bike anot, or only special cases only. So this tip will help, if your a guy, the Megapro confirm no prob for you, but if your a girl, the megapro might be a lil too heavy for you.

Anyway thats bullsh.t about the smelly helmets. Some people wanted to buy their helmets simply because they think they are cheapos if they use BBDC helmets, while most people who had their own helmets is mainly for self hygiene or mostly because of best-fit comfort. I'm using their helmet now and they hardly ever smell. :)

Im a guy actually lol. Still very young.

Oh ok, that's good about the helmets part in BBDC, gives me a relieve about it lol. I thought i only see people using 1 standard bike sizing for 2B one?? Correct me if I am wrong sorry bro.

Bro, when i was taking my 2B years ago, i always use the centre's helmet. Smelly or not, i dont think its is really an issue.

My advice to you that since you are schooling, try to get a cheap cheap bike. If you got a full time job, then do what you like. You never know when you might need the extra moola for textbooks or fees or whatnot.

Anyway, i think you get your licence first then talk. During your course of taking your motor licence, your ideas may change. Just keep an open mind first.

LOL

I can recommend YBR. The handling will be just as easy and forgiving as the school bike, low maintenence.......... I'll leave the resident YBR expert to document the magical fuel penguins part.

X-1R - you will be tempted to later spend $3,000.00 on racing exhaust, R1 disc brake, RX-Z windshield, etc etc.

But my personal opinion is if you want power please go for 2A or even class 2. You could easily make an X-1R 'clear meter' to 200+ kph easily but when you're new can you handle the power and hair-trigger handling?

When I was a newbie I was lucky not to have fallen for a sportsbike that my lack of advanced riding knowledge won't handle. Get something easy and master it, enjoy accident-free years of riding :D

Nothing against X-1R, it is a great 'sports commuter' from the great engineers at Yamaha - if you keep it stock it will be friendly and economical but as you know, young + peer pressure = ?

Whereas YBR will protect you from harm haha.

Basically when I took my Class 2B back then, I started with the intention for a Aprilia RS 125, then during my 2B course, I changed my mind to Honda SP... when I completed my course, I actually landed myself with a Honda Phantom TA200. :) When I taking my Class 2A, I started with the intention to get Honda RVF NC35. During my course, I changed my mind to Honda Fireblade CBR400, when I completed the course, I actually landed myself a Honda Super 4 CB400 Vtec. Finally when I taking my Class 2, I started with the intention for a Suzuki GSXR1300 Hayabusa, during my course I switched to GSXR600 and then Honda Blackbird. Finally when I completed my course, I ended with an enduro....

So, it doesn't matter what you want now.. It will change.... hahaha

Yar balls. YBR almost got no accessories sia. Really almost got nothing. At all. Even brake disc also dont have. have to change the rim to racing boy rim first or rxz rim. Alot of thing cannot mod. That's why you rarely hear YBR modded. Always stock. Lol. I feel sad.

Lol!

Performance or cosmetic mods? I think cosmetics, YBR does have potential. It does look quite modern. Performance... lol. DIY lah.

Phantoms too don't have performance mods but I made some dual-intake airboxes, DIY exhaust wrap, etc. They work! (Don't ask me how, the Potong Pasir guys love em). I also play cheat and use synthetic oil to make it quiet.

Anyways - erm, TS, don't do like I did and buy an old Phantom. Not that cheap once factoring in overhaul with new parts.

You need to know a bit of mechanical stuff to get these things running fast and reliably! It is a good design but dated. Yamaha FZ150 and other "LC4V" sports commuters are your bet, if you find you want more speed.

Wow, seems like there's alot alot of info for me to learn from all you guys in here. I think it will be the best when i learn my 2B in the process then slowly plan. Just found out that I can skip my BTT and BTL which is a good thing :D

But 1 thing for sure is I'll get a 2B bike, upgrade to 2A lic ( but not upgrading my bike), then class 2 ( get a new one)

Learning bike is more tough than car I think due to the attire requirements under a hot sun -.- ( Long sleeve tee, pants, and glove - where to buy cheap cheap gloves for learning bike around west area ah?)

I would not prefer you to installment as they come with interest also.. Since u'r so broke and wanna ride a bike. Why not just get a Wave or a X1R instead. Cheap to maintain too. Remember to put aside cash for your insurance too! so if you are getting a $2k bike, make sure u got $1k more for maintances and insurances.

remember. Nr be a slave just for a bike. A bike is just a transport to bring you to point A to Point B.. so dun get so pricy bike for the first time...

I think I dont have the straight 3k cash to buy, so installment would be a better choice bro. Yes I heard that x1-r is fuel economical and I just need a good transport from point A to B for Class 2B that's all. How about Gilera? I heard it's easy to maintain too, but what about the fuel consumption?

Posted

gilera is an italy bike.. Wear and tear parts very expensive..

And yes.. If u dun have $3k hard cash, i rather u save up first or just get a wave kup bike around $1.2k (2nd hand ) Cause installment really not worth it for a Class 2B bike.. I doubt you will ride a 200cc bike for long.. The moment u get class 2A, u will upgrade bike.

instead of donating the interest to bike shops, why not just save it and get a 400cc 1 year later..

My 2cents worth

I dont intend to upgrade to class 2A bike though, thinking to just ride through class 2A with a 2B bike and till class 2 then i upgrade a new one. wave/sparks/x1-r still the better choices for commuters bike lol
