That is my DIY back in 2005. Bear in mind DIY painting will never look as glossy and 'professional' as a coat done by a properly-equipped and reputable automotive paintshop, hence the garish design to make things a little less dull.

Durability will also depend on a lot of things, primer quality, painter's skill and patience, etc.

If you would like to DIY your RS, you'll probably be going for a full design like my Y125Z, otherwise the painted area and stock paintwork will not match! So it is worthwhile to go to a shop... unless you want an art deco bike :D

first you need to sand your bike with the correct sandpaper and water. give it a good sand till its rough all around. if not when you spray, the paint will be runny and not stick to the surface. apply multiple coats to get it nice and thick. wait for each coat to dry first of course. then put a good layer of lacquer. again wait for each coat to dry..then voila! you have just diy sprayed your bike. of course it takes practise and wont be as nice as a factory made painting. but the effort is worth it.

Sanding part is the killer. I bought a machine from ntuc last time when sanding and diy my bike. Attached diff grade of sand paper to smoothen it out. Then primer then slowly do the coat using airbrush then clear coat it too.

Thru my eyes, you will see the lines of reality blur <[!_!]>

My suggestion, send ur bike to the shop whre the pros knws how to do touchUps or ur dream design. D.i.y paint job seems fun bt wen things goes worst, ur heart drops ! Seriously, i ever face a prob like urs, trying to d.i.y it bt end up, a nitemares ! Not once bt tried it twice.. :(

Patience + savings = Wen ur bike are done with ur dream airbrush design by the pros, a gurantee :) by u ..

Eversince got my licence, have been DIYing my bikes. And it's safe to say, they all turned out like $h|+.... but I'm not one who care too much bout outlook, and my bikes' always dirty coz never bothered to really clean after each trail/track..

If ur tank is plastic, (esp scramblers) never ever spray. It will crack up and peel off due to the petrol fumes.

With that said, it's better to send the bike to the paint shop and let the experts do it. Pay a bit more but get the satisfaction of riding a newly painted bike...
