Article in Straitstimes... "Motorcyclists revved up about lack of parking spaces"

Read the above mentioned article this morning and it's great that the local newspaper has finally brought this up. It's quite frustrating to have to go to places where you can't park your bikes. And the excuses that some of these building owners come up are beyond lame.

Not sure if anything would be done in the near future though...

Thoughts anyone?

True, but then exposes us to legal issues like fines and people feeling that we "endanger" others by parking on the pathways...

Well I kind of find that bikers normally can find their own space to park, don't you :)

Ya. As always. No choice. self survival. But then that will subject us to motor vehicle theft, vandalism and unnecessary money contribution to people who shake leg all day and do nothing in the office

Think there's both side to a coin lah.

Sometimes it's us biker who are assholes. Sometimes, it's the building managements who are assholes.

As a biker, I really wonders is it so hard to provide parking space for bikers? U take out 2 car lot and u can provide 10 bike lots.

Sometime they can used those funny space that can't fit a car at all but that can at least provide 4 bike parking lots. It's not so hard actually.

Even if they charge parking fees. I don't mind paying. But free is the best lah.

For me it's simple. I will pattronise the shopping mall if they have parking for bikes.

I was planning my big purchase a few months back. It abit too heavy to take public transport with that. Abit too light to take cab.

Bike is ok. Compass point in sengkang don't offer bike parking anymore. And the nearest parking lot is 3 HDB blocks away. So too bad. Bring my $ else where.

I end up in courts at tampinese 1. Anyway, their price is better and they have more variety.

I'm not a fussy person. As long convenient and fast can already. I don't mind paying abit more. But guess the no bike parking at compass point leave me no choice.

THEN again on the other hand. Bikers are to blame at times.

Someone I know park at vivo on sun. (weekend think is per entry). He happens to go Batam and come back 3 days later.

The parking fees is $136 (think weekdays is hourly charge, I might be wrong). Further more, Vivo like otehrs, don't allows overnight parking.

What he did was just follow super close to a exiting car to exit without paying. So what can we say on this.

I feel we bikers should really unite and follows all the legal rule. Every household and country have their rules and law. If you don't like it, don't enter.

Also we should update the bike parking infos for the bikers community. No bike parking? well we'll bring the business elsewhere.

What some of us does not realise is that these malls and commercial buildings, their carparks generates income.

When they allocated space for bikes, some people are unhappy having to pay.

When they dont allocate, some people also unhappy.

Since a bike probably occupy 1/3 or 1/4 space of a car, paying the equivalent should not be seen as excessive?

i don't think much will be done actually.

i park at hong leong building everyday. more than happy to b able to squeeze in between e bikes. imagine going up n down w/o a space to park? that's really frustrating.

how abt reaching home late in e night n realise yr own mscp is full? park at yellow line just to realise u hav been fined $25. i have come to appreciate e goodness of having a bike lot n not taking it for granted. sounds funny.

A valid point. But I guess in space-constrained Singapore, there is always a problem for parking any sort of vehicle, not just bikes. I make sure to always ride instead of drive to certain areas in particular, such as Bugis Junction, which have cars queueing to get into the carpark.

When I think about the times I cut the queue of cars and get all the way to the front because only bikes can get in, I can forgive the times when I am inconvenienced because there aren't enough lots or I get fined because someone complained.

It's give and take certainly. Just like we want to be treated fairly we also cannot expect to be given special treatment.

Go across the border.

You will be surprised that large shopping centres in JB and KL are liberal....there are dedicated and big spaces just for motorcyclists.

The building managements here in Singapore need to adopt a mindset containing cars *and* bikes. It's never just about cars, and the obnoxious mindset of preferring to have space to accommodate more cars.
