SGT 10.1 launching in a couple of weeks in Singapore. Please note it will likely not support voice calls unless Samsung Singapore manages to design a workaround just for local consumers. SGT 7 inch which we are using now, is really a giant smartphone.

I'd just skip the 10.1 and go for the next super tablet / phone due end of this year. ASUS says you buy a tablet with a detachable smartphone - 2 devices for the price of one. How awesome is that!?

I have already tried iPad / iPad 2 and wasn't really impressed - I prefer the small tab because its portable and just about at the limit of convenience in terms of size and functionality. Anything bigger is really awkward to carry around. And erm... i dont think you want a 10 inch tablet mounted on your tourer/cruiser bike as a navigation device. At $1,300 for the top spec version, Big Tab is strictly a home/office device. Won't want to risk it outdoors much less cable tied to my handlebars lol.

I only do that because the Tab 7 is very rugged.

got my tab liao.. but cant access the sumsung app??? Black Screen only...

Whoa fast buy lol.

Samsung apps needs data connection too. Make sure 3G data or wifi is on. If it refuses to work just skip it, so far I found nothing useful in Samsung apps because Android market can supply all your smartphone needs. I mean.. who needs dictionary apps, etc?

so has anyone DIY from KIES, the upgrade from froyo to gingerbread?

did it wipe out any data or app installed?

Most people go through life following the crowd.

Others think for themselves.

They go their own way.

2 days 10 hours unplugged and battery is still at 78%. Wth. Is it ever going to run out?

In the meantime I bought a skin sticker from ebay from $8, free local shipping with one day delivery time.

IMAG0003.jpg

Link to Ebay Item:

http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360374704561&ssPageName=ADME:L:EOISSA:SG:1123

Seller name is OVC_store (Eric). Vendor has many different types of skins so grab them while stocks last :) DIY installation is easy provided you have played with car and motorbike vinyl decals before, and the sticker is of a "faux leather" type texture. It's pretty durable and is reusable if you know how to store the sticker on a greased paper and don't contaminate the adhesive side.

Eric sells accessories and screen protectors for the iPad and Kindle too. See his inventory here

http://shop.ebay.com.sg/ovc_store/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25

I made the decision to ditch a hard faux leather case in favour of a sticker set because the case causes the Tab to heat up under heavy use or during AC power charging. As you know, higher temperature means reduces battery longevity and possibly higher error rate during high processor loads. (erm, this is quite geeky I know).

NICE steering wheel mounting! How did you fix it to the car? Velcro?

I do a similar setup on my handlebars using part of the faux leather case. Cable tie the case to the windshield, insert Tab and viola, simple GPS / electronic speedo.

For games and all your app needs just use Google market. Ignore the Samsung app store as it's rather lame.

Interesting - a super non-slip pad that can secure objects vertically as well. Definitely very useful for in-cabin use (ie, covered vehicles). For items exposed to the elements (bike) mechanically securing the item may prove more practical still. (cable ties, housings, etc)

Hello felllow SGT user. I just join the party few days back. I owned an Ipad(3G) as well, after just several hrs of using Android, I now prefer Android over iOS. hooked up to PC and updated to 2.3.3 gingerbread, nothing lost, don't have much inside anyway.

- Like:

Expandable SD card, visible on PC when connected, Data, Music & Video transfer without need of special software like iTunes.

make calls (voice, video), SMS, MMS & Wassup

Share Internet Via tethering & potable Hotspot

4 buttons

Widgets

Dual Display (home and Application) the least used apps can be hidden away

- IPad Has it, can SGT have it too or maybe I donno how to do it?

Folders for apps... 4pages of apps no classification/groups abit draggy for me. I like to file apps according to their type (games, work, entertainment, etc)

so far that's all...

more happy with SGT than when I sink my $ on Ipad.

couldn't access data for a few hours from 6 to 10pm..

Power off my SGT 3 times and yet cannot work, FB, Emails all no access

So called the telco "M1" a while ago and they did a check, says everything is fine on their system.

Finally they say will reset SIM card network, and then reset my SGT.

now it back to normal... phew.....

Hi, I just got my SGT in last PC show. Still learning and hope to learn from u guys. I found that it frequently hang after playing game. I recently send to Samsung to upgrade the latest software. Any apps that you guys might want to recommend to me?

Posted (edited)

After upgrading to gingerbread, I realised that the battery power is suffering slightly. I can only managed 14+ hours of usage majority is standby time and I don't have much calls. Mostly used by my son for angry birding.

Recently battery meter suddenly went bonkers, indication went from 60% to 1% without warning. It didn't shut down. 3rd party apps also indicates the same 1% power level. Restarting brings the battery meter to sync with the batt level.

Under heavy multitasking, switching from apps to apps to apps (3 to 4 apps). the galaxy will just shut down.

Add-on dated 11Jul

batt at 20% shut down without warning...try to power on but cant. plugged in charger and managed to start it up... Seem like the Battery power and the battery meter is in very bad sync... any idea on this? BTW my set not rooted.

same thing here, when Bat at 15-20% will auto shut down....

One thing is that there's no indication of remaining %power left n the SGT...

Is there any utility out there that show the remaining power left?

Big Tab (SGT 10.1) update from Samsung Singapore facebook page:

"@Sadhisan: We'd really love to provide our fans the products they want as soon as possible. But sometimes there could be unexpected changes.

@Carmen: The default Honeycomb (v3.0) doesn't support voice calls.

The GALAXY Tab 10.1 will not have a microSD slot.

@aaron: We're always trying to balance between providing more value for consumers i.e. updating from Android 3.0 to 3.1 and a tight launch window with a very extensive roadmap for any year.

We'd much rather be able to sell the product as soon as possible too, but at the same time we want to provide a good user experience along with it.

Do also note that the same product may have different specifications when launched in a different country."

Verdict - not buying. I need (micro)SD card slot for photography (upload hi res from field trips directly - micro port also can, since I can use adapter) and I also need voice calls.

I have seen very old Toshiba tablets that have better features that support outfield use and also have full size SD card slots! Alternative products like tablet convertible and Eee Transformer are going to be on my shopping list because they are easily affordable at $700-800 by now, instead of a whopping iPad topping $1,400 plus for a top spec 10.1 Tab (32/64 gig + 3G)

SGT 7 inch is still the best option especially now that you can get these from Funan at $400 plus only.

I get voice calls + microSD slot :D

good to know that you guys are sharing info on the SGT, am considering trading my iphone 3GS for one, trying to look for the pros and cons before making the switch.

For this issue go to connection settings (data access point) and click a couple of times on the data provider (Where one of them says M1 MMS and the other is the data access point). This will instantly reactivate your 3G.

Try to look for a battery widget that displays charge level and the battery voltage. These are much more accurate. There are some nice ones on the market for free.

Yes I reviewed one just a month ago. Look through 1-2 previous pages and you will see it. $8 SGD and 2 days postage.

To date ive send my phone to samsung twice. One is faulty batt and new software, recently its for a new motherboard and they change the software to gingerbread. Soon my warrenty will expire. Hopefully no more other problems. I do like my tab but problems like this turn me off

Anyways, what app do u guys/gals use for navigation? Singapore and malaysia. Using gps. Goggle map does not have turn by turn features if im not wrong. Im a total nood in directions so i do really need a gps. To bring two big device is irritating. I dun mind paying for a good gps turn by turn app

Thanks for the help
