Muc-Off: A Personal Review

I just bought and used the Muc-Off dual bundle, consisting of the Bike Cleaner and Bike Spray.

 

 

First, the Bike Cleaner.

Instructions: Pre-wet bike, spray all over, wait 3-5 mins and rinse off. Some grime requires additional scrubbing.

 

Well, it works as advertised, but its no miracle product. Water marks disappear with no scrubbing required, but any other type of grime or stain like mud, brake dust or chain fling will require scrubbing. Overall, this product's method is indeed easier and faster than using a pail of car wash mix and sponging the bike all over; and you can leave your bike to air dry without water marks appearing.

 

BUT...... even before i encountered muc-off, i've been using a similar method by pre-mixing my own concentrated solution of car wash liquid in a water spray bottle (the kind you can easily get at NTUC or hardware stores). Not all car wash types can work this way, Mama Lemon certainly wont cut it, and be sure to use streak-free kind if you cant bother with wiping dry and dont want water marks. But you can get your own muc-off alternative at far cheaper this way.

 

Then theres the bike spray.

Instructions: Spray on bike after washing to disperse water, wipe off any excess water or bike spray oil, leaving your bike sparkling. contains P.T.F.E, more commonly known as Teflon.

 

A few words of caution. This thing smells like insecticide and leaves an oily cloudy film on the bike. The whole experience is like ur getting rid of cockroaches on your bike. seriously.

 

it doesn 'disperse the water', at least not that i can see. and trying to wipe dry the stuff, especially with some water still remaining, leaves the bike looking totally oily and slimy, very un-glossy and certainly not sparkling.

 

i then realized the trick was to really, really let it dry properly, like for a few hours after spraying, or overnight if you can. which was what i did, and next morning i brought down a clean wiping rag (which turned dirty and reeked of insecticide after i was done), and performed a quick wipe down. and i really mean quick wipe down, not buffing like you'd do with wax. 2 to 3 mins of wiping, done. and amazingly there really is a deep gloss mirror finish like wax.

 

now this product really impresses me. this is by far the easiest way to achieve a high gloss wax look on the bike; no other 'quick-wax' product even comes close. waiting time to dry aside, we're talking a quick spray and then a quick wipe-not-buff, and its done. i'd clap my hands, except i need to scrub off the insecticide smell off my fingers first....

 

Closing comments: These two products work as advertised, and the whole process was way, waaaaaaay faster than my usual pail of car wash and sponge all over followed by waxing and buffing. but i might buy only the bike spray in future, and continue mixing my own muc-off alternative in a water spray bottle. that thing is not cheap and using it on a class 2 bike, a bottle wont last beyond 5 washings. but the bike spray wins me over hands down. BUT i'm not sure how well the spray will work on worn bikes requiring hard polishing, coz my bike while not new is still a well-maintained surface with Honda quality finish. and i also do not know as yet how long each layer will last compared to wax.

i'll have to say again, the muc-off bike spray cant take major credit for this finish. that honour belongs to Honda for producing such high quality finish on their class 2 bikes. i say that coz my bike is 5 years old and i've never applied any pain protection system on it coz i dont know of any local paint protection vendor who will apply their product on a motorcycle (on a side note, if anybody knows of such a vendor, do let me know).

 

but it does require waxing to bring out the high mirror finish you see above. the muc-off bike spray is not any glossier than any other waxes i've used, but it is way easier than having to wax and buff.

i super lazy, i want my bike to have showroom shine the easiest way possible i cannot like some car/bike enthusiasts every weekend or fortnightly will wash and polish for half a day for the super-wet-look-deep-gloss shine. my car oso i send for paint protection system (specifically CS-2) and then just wash regularly. i have never waxed my car in more than a year of ownership, just the thought makes me

For the Spray and Shine, I basically spray on the bike and spread it around with minimal buffing. Then so a final wipe with a new cloth. Done.

(I used Spray and Shine on the fairings)

 

For the SC1, just spray on the plastics panels, leave for 1 minute or so. Then spread it/ wipe it. Done.

(I used these on the 'matt' type finish panels - clock plastics covers, dashboard side panels...etc)

 

I got both at Planet, but MotoWorld also got sell. Both is around $18? Forget the exact price.

I probably used both for about 10 polishes/ times on my Fazer. Didnt bombard the whole bike, just spray and spread it even.

Mine is a half faired bike, probably you will use more on your CBR?

 

hmm..thinking of it...it's been 2 months since the last wash or something...haha

I just bought Muc Off yesterday. Bought

1) Duo Pack - consist of Bike Cleaner and Bike Spray

2) Degreaser

3) Chain Cleaner

4) Chain Lube

 

Please note that my bike has not been washed for 3months now, and bike always under the sun and rain and not covered for the 3 months. Dont ask me why.. Hehehe..

 

I use whatever i already have in conjucntion with muc off, the polish i use Sonax, but i prefer Meguairs polish. I always use till finish before switching brands.

 

First i started cleaning the chain,

 

Sprayed the degreaser on the rear sprocket and a bit on whole chain, swingarms and my side stand (got huge lump of grease on it).

 

Waited a few minutes then i hook up my KettenMax chain cleaner on chain, plug in the Muc Off chain cleaner and gave the chain a few spins. 4-5 complete revolutions if i'm not wrong, didn't really use that much chain cleaner as i had expected.

The i use my finish line brush set, srub off the grease on the side stand and swingarms.

Then i hose down the chain area, side stand and wet the whole bike. I let the water soak and drip off the excess for a few minutes. Bike too wet spraying Muc Off would cause the bike cleaner to drip off..

Suprisingly did not use much Bike Cleaner as well.

 

I waited a few mins, then i use a wet micro fiber sponge to sponge the top of bike, top box, seat, tank handle bar headlights.

Next i use my finish line brush set to scrub down the whole bike, starting from front rims to engine to rear rims.

 

Hose down the whole bike after that. One tip, best not to spray whole bike one shot. I should have done part by part, example, start from top then hose down, then spray one rims, scrub and hose, then engine, etc.. It's never good to let any cleaning agent dry on bike before rinsing.

 

Then i let the bike drip dry for a few minutes, taking the bike off the side stand and shaking it. Like mixing premix 2T in tank. Let it stand for 2-3mins, took off the seat and use Meguairs Water magnet micro fiber drying cloth to dry top part of bike. Top Box, tank, handlebar area, headlight front mudguard etc. All the area that is painted, except body frame.

Once the top part all dried, i sprayed the whole bottom half of bike with Bike Spray. Then i went to drink coffee and smoke. When i came back can see that it dispersed water abit, i sprayed bike spray on chain also to disperse water as i will be lubing it later.

 

The i sprayed Maxima SC1 of top box bottom half, the unpainted plastic part. While SC1 was setting in, i clayed my bike with Sonax Spray and Clay.

Once all clayed up, i wiped off the excess SC1 on box.

Next i applied Sonax Polish and Wax no.2, not no.3. Let it dry for 45min first coat then 20min 2nd coat then 10min 3rd coat. Decreasing the pressure on the Meguairs Even Coat Microfiber Applicator pad.

Then i put on one coat of Sonax Brilliant Wax no.1, let it dry for 30min then buff off with Meguairs Supreme Shine micro fiber cloth.

Then i noticed that the Bike spray had dispersed most of the water, especially on the chain. I sprayed some Muc Off chain cleaner on a piece of rag and wiped off remaining dirt on chain, spinning it 2-3 rounds while grabbing the chain with the rag between my hands.

 

I noticed that the Bike Spray made some plastic parts look very dry. So i sprayed on Maxima SC1 on chain guard and other unpainted plastic parts.

 

Next u lube the chain with Muc Off Chain Lube. It goes one dry, very scarry cos the chain looks like no lube.

 

After everything done, i wiped all my brake disc with brake cleaner, not Muc Off brand.

 

All in all i really recommend the Muc-off products... Really good and cut the work time alot. As for the chain cleaner it's smooth but it's only the first day so i dunno how it will stand against my fav chain lube, Maxima Chain Wax.

oh bro. so now i wanted to clean my bike all along. after reading your post i somehow got an idea man... i want to clean my swingarm and chain. wax and polish my fairings, the engine, carb area and all those metal area make it shine. Once again thanks for sharing bro! =D
