sorry i do not have the Scottoiler on my bike. Maybe can ask around some more before diving into a conclusion. I don't think that it has to do with the Scottoiler, had one fixed onto my previous bike VFR 2003 model and nothing adverse was felt though!

Dudes,

Anyone can recommend a good place to putty & respray my bird? My fairing cracked at 3 points. A smart ass driver cut into my path at Causeway Point & I had a low-speed slide. ******* "cabut" before I can get his plate number...

There is a spray shop at Kallang Ave, you can check them out. Sorry i vaguely remember it as Replica or Regina. Getting old cannot remember things well.

Ok, thanks. Maybe I can get someone to ride my bike and see if they feel any difference. :D

Hi sexyh, thanks for the info. Hmm...sounds like maybe I really need to go do the throttle body sync.

Just a thought, do you have Scottoiler on your bike? The Scottoiler has a tube that plugs into one of the vacuum ports, wondering if that might cause any difference.

Hi bro, i do have a scottoiler. no difference on the handler bars at the 3k mark. however if you feel a difference on the heat emitting from both your exhuast when starting the bike cold then the throttle body sync may have run. Thats my 2 cent opinion:cheeky:

Hi,

I'm riding an Analog EFI Blue-Bird. There's no abnormal vibration as the RPM goes up on my bird.

Can you check and feedback the 'sharpness' of the images on both yr side mirrors when you are travelling at 2k / 3K / 4K RPM at a certain speed?? R they the same? I presume that the mirror brackets are in good working with Bolt & Nuts tighten. Some bird out there might be able to point out useful ideas as you input more observations.

Hi Hokage,

Thanks for highlighting this, maybe my question wasn't very clear that's why nobody replied...:cheeky:

I mean vibration in the handlebars. At lower RPMs like 2000 or higher RPMs like 4000, I feel no vibrations through the grips at all, everything is very smooth. But at 3000rpms, I feel an increase in vibration through the grips. I didn't call it vibration as it was quite high frequency, more like buzziness, but you can definitely feel it after awhile.

The bad thing is 3000 is often the rpm at which I'm riding on the expressways.

Understand this slight buzzing may be normal in other makes, but was hoping it's not normal for a Honda bike.

Pls help me shed some light! Thanks!

Well, having ridden and worked on carbed bikes before, and having a good idea of how EFI works, here's my take.

Carb cons:

========

- unless it's a vacuum operated carb (throttle cable connects to flaps controlling airflow, slide is lifted by vacuum) your carb'ed bike is not going to adjust for different altitudes. It'll become leaner at sea level and too rich when you ride at high altitudes. Vacuum operated carbs do compensate for this to some degree (but are still limited by jet size and needle shape), but slide operated carbs do not. Not sure which ones are on the bird.

- if you're buying a second hand bike, it's a pain in the butt. You never know what the previous owners did to muck up the jetting. They could've put in non-stock jetting, changed the needles, or one needle out of the 4 are not stock, pin-holes in vacuum diaphragm that causes the carbs not to work properly, float height set incorrectly, etc. The only answer is to remove the carb, and remove the jets to check the size imprinted on them. And the needles too. I had a hell of a time just troubleshooting a bike with one carb, and found a few pin-sized holes in the vacuum diaphragm. Imagine doing this for 4 carbs.

- If the engine has been worked on before, meaning it's been either ported, or the pistons changed out to a larger size etc. the jetting needs to compensate for this. Again, no real way of knowing what's in the engine unless you tear it open. Or you could find a patient mechanic who has a dyno and jet it correctly for you, but it's a real pain in the butt and I doubt many will be willing to. Imagine having to remove and replace the jets several times untill you get the jetting right.

Air-cleaner and exhuast upgrades also require jetting changes.

- Carbs do not adjust for optimal Air/Fuel ratio when engines age and degrade. Rings don't seal so well, valves don't seal so well, cylinder gets larger because of wear and tear, etc. A closed loop EFI system does.

- Closed loop EFI system does all the "tuning" for you, provided you don't make major changes to the engine, air-cleaner or exhaust. It's fire and forget. You can't really mess with the software in the stock ECM, and you can easily spot a PC if it's installed.

- Carbs are hard to troubleshoot, and not many people are willing to spend the time to do it for you, because it's just not worth their time, they can't really charge you much for it. EFI bikes have fault-codes, you could probably troubleshoot it yourself with some decent mechanical skills and a multimeter.

Carb Pros

=======

- Carb parts are cheap to replace. Jets and needles don't cost much, and carbs seldom get damaged unless you had a gorilla work on it, or smashed the bike. Injectors and ECMs are a different matter!

- You can work on them yourself without needing complicated equipment. (But then, EFI bikes don't require you to work on them at all).

Neutral

======

- Both carbs and throttle bodies require synchronising. However, I heard that throttle bodies (EFI) seldom go out of sync, even on bikes with 250,000km on them and have never been synced since brand new. This of course assumes the bike has never been dropped hard or crashed.

- Jets and injectors may require cleaning if you encounter bad gas. Not really necessary though, unless you keep things really clean, cleaning carbs probably does more harm then good (dirt on hands, dirt on cloth, etc).

I definitely prefer EFI bikes, especially closed loop EFI bikes with a feedback system (O2 sensor).

thx alot. thats very insightful.

carb BB seem like a bad choice if i were tour.

bikes seldom have the o2 sensor unlike cars. newer BB have o2 sensor. anybody have anyidea wad other bike have this?

Hi

I wouldn't say it's a bad choice, after all so many people have them and tour with them, just that EFI is better..........:angel:

Oh, the most important thing I absolutely forgot of why EFI bikes are better.....the knock sensor circuit.

Engine knock (pre-ignition and detonation), either from bad petrol, too-low octane petrol, hot-spots in the combustion chamber or excessive carbon in the combustion chamber, is probably one of the greatest destroyers of your engine.

EFI bikes will retard the ignition timing to prevent knocking, and it has a knock sensor that will detect the engine knocking. Especially when you lug the engine. Carbed bikes do not have such a luxury.
