That depends on what you're looking at..

Basically, for SCDF Fire Fighters (you were once a NSF Fire Fighter) requires to go through BFFC (Basic Fire Fighter Course, during my time it's this name but I think they renamed it to FSR..) which I believe you've gone through to qualify as a NSF Fire Fighter. Unfortunately, you did not sign on as a regular during your duration with SCDF.. you may need to check with SCDF on directions..

Source: http://www.scdf247.sg/fire_rescue_specialist.php

If you're looking into "private" practice.. there are a few "private" practice for fire fighting.. you can try contacting them for directions..

1. Airport fire service (I don't know what is their actual name) AES Fire Safety & Standards Unit (FSSU): 6541 2535

2. ERT (Emergency Response Team) for petrolchem companies? Some bros in petrolchem might wanna advise on this..

3. Shipyards - most of the shipyard safety personnels in my class are ex-SCDF Fire Fighters..

Fire safety and EHS/SHE/HSE/OHS/WSH "safety" are 2 different things.. although usually performed by the same department (because they both cross reference to each other) and/or same personnel.

For occupational safety, there's currently a few main industries..

I'll take a wild guess you have no GCE 'O' levels (as you mentioned low education) and suggest that you go for WPLN ( http://wsq.wda.gov.sg/GenericSkills/CES/WPLN/ ) which you can take the computerised test at Redhill.

Once you get the pre-req for Certificate in WSH, take the cert and start moving forward from there.. there's tons of WSH courses (e.g. Risk Management course, WSH Management course, BCSS, BISH, etc etc) to be taken so get ready to spend quite abit on education..

Long post again.. xD

thanx bro for ur advice.. im now waiting for the basic cert in WSH in ngee ann.. then will look for a job, then slowly upgrade myself.. willing to take diff type of WSH courses..

Last 2 years, I was strongly recommended by my officer to work at PSA for some safety position. But I turned it down coz just ORD and wanted to have fun. Now, regretting :faint:

There are 4 places that conduct Certificate in WSH, why wait for only Ngee Ann?

You can try NTUC Learninghub, BCA, NP or SP.

Infact, NTUC has full time which takes about 2 weeks. Part time is about 1 and a half months.

Hi All,

Happen to chance upon this useful thread. :)

Im a late 20s in the logistics/material industry also relating to projects, warehousing & gov-linked contracts but sadly Im not in a Safety position. Over the duration, I find my passion towards safety from my much participation in EHS etc though Im not in the official committee. My qualifications are only Informatics diploma and Logistics SCM Degree.

How can i enter a safety career apart from the certs? I think i will have problem since i'll be considered 0 yrs experience. But im sincerely interested and dont even mind harsh outdoor activities because physical hardships do not deter me. Mundane activities are chores to me instead.

Thanks & Regards,

Chris

Hi all

Chance upon this interesting thread. I am a WSHO/FSM in petrolchem industry.

I saw queries on how to enter the safety industry withouy referral....For people with no safety exp but has technical background, and want to enter the safety field, the easiet way is to go into the marine industry. That is how I got into the safety line. They would appint you as safety officer/engr even if you are a fresh dip grad.

Pros: It is an excellent training ground to learn the safety fundamentals. You can gain experience on hotwork, heavy lifting, confined space entry, working at height faster than other industry. Starting pay in low but bonus is great (4-7 mths) for major shipyards.

Cons: Prepare to work long hours as safety officers are required to conduct daily coordination meeting on saturday and sundays.

Can be physically demanding when you need to climb up and down the cargo tanks which are 5-6 storeys high and some with only vertical ladders.

You would be appointed as hotwork assessors, meaning you would be liable for any hotwork that catches fire. Remember the Keppel Shipyard explosion?

Best way to learn safety is in a hazardous environment. No pain, no gain. Work for a few years, get registered as a WSHO and move on to better industry.

Cheers!

LOL! Good for you.

But hor, bridging course is not stress leh, it's chicken feet. Wait for the diploma course then you know what is stress if you have working conditions which require you to work overtime. KNN, no time to finish project leh. LOL!

But all in all, when you graduate, you will feel it's all worth it.

hi all safety personnel

i am a noob in the safety industry,it seem like most tof the post is abt certification. would someone give me a general idea what is yr daily work routine in yr industry.

Read the following regulations

WSH (Construction) Regulations 2007, Section II Regulations 7 & 8

WSH (WSH Officer) Regulations 2007, Regulations 9 & 10

I'm not attaching the regulations, as part of our work is to know where to find the regulations. So you must at least "try" it.
