Hello all,

There seems to be a great deal of confusion about this topic.

Firstly, since we are selling DP brakes the immediate impression we will expect from posting would be that this post is biased. We are not here to promote our product but to set some things right. Have it your way after you finish this post.

The number of people here who are keen on cheap brake pads make up the main bulk. Certainly there is nothing wrong with getting the best value for money. But is it really value for money?

Brake pads can cost anywhere from $2-$240 a set and there's good reason why. Performance brake pads costs more because they cost more to make and thus they deliver more. Cheap pads are made with cost savings in mind and not brake performance so there's a wide divide in the kind of performance you can expect between the two. If anything, the number of cheap pads available has increased here and many same brands are actually repacked versions of the same thing from the same factories.

The reason why many customers in Singapore do not accept performance pads is because they do not ride their machines very hard, nor do they need to. This train of thought is further compounded by small bike owners who think that they would not require better brake pads than the "standard" types available. This could not be further than the truth.

While small bike owners and some commuting customers subscribe heavily to that belief, they often ignore the fact that the brakes are the most important part of the motorcycle. Displacement, machine type, or kind of use really does not matter when accidents happen. Mostly, panic braking is a result of poor braking, and as a result, wheel lock occurs and thus an accident happen. But usually the road surface is blamed for it, it was wet, sandy, or maybe the other party was too sudden in their actions. Whatever it is, if one has consistent and good braking practice, these could have been avoided.

Cheap pads will not provide consistent performance in different conditions. And consistency is important especially when riding on the streets when progressive braking is key. Especially in a rain, cheap brake pads fade easily. What is really required are brakes you can trust. Something that is predictable and consistent in delivery of braking performance.

While the cost of good brake pads are high, they will save you undue pain, inconvenience, and unpleasantness in general. Find out how much a fracture costs in medical bills, add the inconveniences and multiply it by pain. You'll get the idea.

There is no logic too in using $20 dollars brake pads on a $20k R1. Would the same owner put cheap tires on the bike too?

kudos to your brilliant command of the language.. one of the most impressively effective posts that i have personally come across here.. an important message that will definitely stay with many people, at least for me.. so thanks!

i would recommend EBC HH rated brakepads. $70 a pair is quite value for money. excellent grip and no squeaks.

don need to save on such things

I think Feroddo has three type of brake pad for bikes.

Red packing = normal ceramic compound

Purple packing = sinstered

Another type is of higher range.

I can only see these two model in the market so far? Any one saw others?

I just bought Ferodo Platinum for $15 from LAB. Silver and Red packaging.....dunno if this is the one u talking bout :p

S4Sixty,

No offense taken. I would agree with you that there are many out there who miss the point.

Where's the cost savings in buying a big expensive bike? To resort to scrimping on maintenance after the bike is bought is highly irrational, well at least for us.

There are also some who delay oil changes and put cheap oil in their big bikes. Are they part of some product testing division?

The reason why this is prevalent here is because it appeals very directly to the individual's. Everyone is seeking to maximise his/her own benefits so cheap ripoffs will always be here to stay. It's much easier for a mechanic to appeal to you to save money than to try and persuade the customer to spend a little more. And the winner in the end is the seller who just rakes in the dollars.

It's easy to press the "save money" button to clinch a sale. And thereafter the overall impression is that of making a smart and informed buy by choosing the cheaper and "usable" option. And when the purchased item fails, it is easily relegated to that of a cheap product having "served it's time". A normal response for not wanting to feel bad about making the purchase in the first place.

A not so recent credit card promotion campaign went "spend more save more", it had us in stitches... Does that tell you something?

We believe in using the right tool for the job and in line with this so are our products aligned. There are a few other sellers in the market who also carry good products here. Then there are many sellers who sell anything so long as the people keep buying.

The none discerning customer stands to lose more in the end. Brake pads and tires are crucial to proper road holding and control. Just think about it.

Yes u are right in a way.

But there are some shops who believe since they carry high end products, they can show attitude and also charge high prices since no ones else carries them.

sometime this makes us buyers resort to other products which are cheaper.

So if retailers sell products at affordable prices instead of cut throat prices, maybe we'll see increase of end users using end end products.

Cheers !
