It uses the usual IE engine, with added popup filter, ad filter, search engine, tabbed browsing, one-click history/cache cleaner, skins, plugins...

Although I blame IE for being too overridden with flaws and exploits, I still stick to it since the days when I did web design and JavaScript. IE was way flexible to handle whatever interactive website magic the designers throw to it.

A real geek shuns IE. Geeks go for alternatives like Firefox, Opera, Torpark, OperaTor. Geek is all about W3C conformance, speed, light weight, secuirty, etc. Since when IE is conformance? It's exactly the weak adherence to specifications that results in all the interoperability and security pitfalls.

The so called web designers nowadays only know how to use vendor publishing (read: FrontPage) to develop their pages resulting in pages that only works or works badly with other browsers. Try giving them a nothing but a text editor and see if they are able to do their so called magic?

Opera had memory caching since like ages ago. Firefox had memory caching for months. IE? Only the recent IE7. Try launching all 3 browsers and see which start the fastest and which the slowest. Launch the same page on all 3 browsers and see which loads the fastest. Surf a bit with all 3 browsers and then try the forward/backwards and see which is the fastest.

I only applaud IE7 for being the first and current only browser supporting Extended Validation SSL certificates.

Spot on! You had me at "wah!"

I used to be a FrontPage addict, where naturally this program would encourage developers to use IE as their final testing ground before website deployment. Although I've moved out of the cut-and-paste, and WYSIWYG bandwagon, I had clung on to IE, not knowing or caring about its flaws.

I do applaud the W3C standard, but IMO, it will take time for me to wean off of IE and onto Firefox.

By the way, Firefox works great on Macs, where Safari just can't do the job of displaying the website correctly.

Good for you, Lass. Welcome to the club :cheer:

Although I'm using IE6 at work to view this, at home I'm using Firefox. So please don't hold it against me if you discover I'm using IE6 to view this. I have no control over my browser at work.

I'm using Opera. The good thing about it is that it can store your previously viewed websites. Therefore, when you launch Opera again, it will automatically load all the websites for you!:thumb:

Was at Microsoft today. Toying with Vista. Anyway, my experience of IE7 after today. CRAP. Accessed my company email. It's Microsoft Outlook Webmail. Guess what? Using IE7, it is not working properly. I can read mail BUT when I clicked to reply, you see the crappiness. The message panel becomes an "invalid" component.

So much for compatibility even with own products. This only goes to show how they design their applications and sign off the specifications. The own next generation cutting edge state of art browser cannot even intepret codes from their own applications correctly. :sian:

Luckily I have another virtualised 2003 Server with whatever IE version it is shipped with otherwise I can't even reply my company email...

Microsoft, you're now at your 7th generation browser but I still cannot foresee myself using it if I have the the option...

Maxthon n Avant all using IE as platform, so still prone to more security issues.

using DAP but can't seem to d/l anything using DAP when i'm using FF

any way ard this?kos IE7 always shows error messages and shuts itself down...

and i'd rather not be using IE

-= Unsure of what to get=-

Bro, I presume you have to search for a Firefox alternative to DAP; perhaps a plugin could accomplish the same? DAP only works on IE or Netscape, to my knowledge.

Anyways, regarding browsers, this is what I see about IE

  • Developers leverage on IE to build application-like websites that look and function like the apps on your PC (eg. Microsoft Outlook Web)
  • They also benefit from IE's graphics filters, giving websites the opportunity to display their "special effects"
  • Browser of choice for corporate establishments and I.T. team alike:
Customize, place lock-down restrictions on, and regulate the features of IE.
  • I.T. admins can benefit from its ease of deploying settings. A few mouse clicks to set restrictions at the company's HQ, and all the Internet Explorer equipped PCs below the HQ level gets locked-down.

And this is why I think Firefox wins public grace and strength:

  • Being a 3rd party program that operates separately from Windows, it is free from spyware/malware frontline attacks.
  • They pioneered "Tabbed Browsing" :hungry:
  • Open source. But pseudo-controlled by shared development standards -- so no Tom ###### Harry can "zhng" their own Firefox and distribute it to public.
  • Embraces, and abides by, the World Wide Web (W3C) standards, making sure website developers make better and functional websites.
  • Plugins.
  • Works in Windows, Mac OS X, Linux

The sad part is, a lot of web developers still create websites with fancy features that IE can only display properly. That's partly the reason why I stick to IE.

Ah...apologies. Using an older version so I'm very unaware of the FF integration.
