Riding into Johor - Things to bring, where to park & things to take note of...

Hello everybody,

I am thinking of making my first trip across the causeway with my old phantom ta200. I will be going in with my gf as a pillon so her safety is of utmost importance.

I couldn't find alot of information about this matter so I am seeking the experienced friends here to share your experience. Let me start off by stating what I already know:

Things to bring:

Via Woodlands Checkpoint - White Card & Passport

Via 2nd Link - Above + Cash Card & Touch and Go Card

Parking:

1 - if ur gonna park n leave ur bike out of sight, bring a thick heavy duty chain wif a sturdy lock n only park where there r security guards stationed or else never leave bike out of sight

Things to take note of:

1 - Make sure road tax is valid, custom officers will check

2 - Take care of personal belongs and bring only necessary items across

3 - Carry your backpack and fanny pack in the front and make sure there is no loose straps or portion people can grab hold of and drag them off you

4 - Keep your passport separated along with some cash

5 - bring along those fizzy Redoxon tablets. Great for throwing into that big mug of fresh orange juice to make it taste better

the remaining questions are as per my subject :) what to bring? where to park safely if I'm visiting popular places such as Taman Sentosa, KSL or Jusco? and lastly, what to take note of?

thanks in advance :cheeky:

Why not just go in with the regular groups of folks going in before a solo trip? You really scared your g/f ganna seduced by others arh?

One thing I learnt, going into JB Taman Sentosa to eat, with a Phanton Knight. Was to bring along those fizzy Redoxon tablets. Great for throwing into that big mug of fresh orange juice to make it taste better.

Actually I go to jb quite frequently its just that I don't ride inside. I usually go the same old places such as holiday plaza, KSL city and sentosa by bus/taxi/foot so i more or less is quite familiar with the area up to that extent. The main purpose of the solo trip is to source for cheap curtains contractor so might be visiting a few unfamiliar places based on online recommendation. Dun wanna trouble anyone for my personal matters :)

GF must take care mah... need to account for her safety to be answerable to her parents... some more in JB, notorious for so many wrong reasons.

I will still recommend going in a group. One is extra group of persons to watch your bikes while you go into a shop to ask. 2nd is, there is extra people to share a big meal of food with. Can order more stuff to well, tantalise the palate.

Some of my points in blue below.

...

Things to bring:

Via Woodlands Checkpoint - White Card & Passport

Via 2nd Link - Above + Cash Card & Touch and Go Card [i only go via 2nd Link to beat the crowd. I will recommend, for quick access through the toll gates in Msia, get one of those wrist pouches for running and put the TouchnGo card inside and strap to your right wrist. So there is no need to fumble with pockets, etc but just reach out with right arm and tap while left hand pulls in the clutch in 1st gear... chop chop chili chop...]

Parking:

1 - if ur gonna park n leave ur bike out of sight, bring a thick heavy duty chain wif a sturdy lock n only park where there r security guards stationed or else never leave bike out of sight

Things to take note of:

1 - Make sure road tax is valid, custom officers will check [never seen any of them doing this before...]

2 - Take care of personal belongs and bring only necessary items across

3 - Carry your backpack and fanny pack in the front and make sure there is no loose straps or portion people can grab hold of and drag them off you

4 - Keep your passport separated along with some cash [Also bring along a photocopy of your passport/IC separately, in case your passport gets lost and you will need to contact the Singapore Consulate in JB for a temp DOI to return to Singapore. But do not expect immediate return to Singapore cos the DOI is not issued immediately. Get the contact details of the Singapore Consulate in JB for such cases/other emergencies.

5 - bring along those fizzy Redoxon tablets. Great for throwing into that big mug of fresh orange juice to make it taste better

If very 'Kia See', bring a bike cover along to cover, and a disk lock to lock the wheel also. Just make sure you take the key out.

I go Jusco on Phantom is handle bar lock, rear wheel disk lock, front wheel chained to long steel bar at parking lot one.

But honestly, Phantom in JB got no resale value. They got their own crusier, shape's like Phantom, but exhaust is slanted to the side and got mainstand. Think it's called a Jag or something. Logo looks like this (/\/\) With a rival cruiser like that in the market, Phantom steal already also very hard to find buyer, strip for parts also no use. Steal old TA200 for what? Rather steal more valuable bike. So Old Phantom quite safe. Pimped up Phantom different story. Some idiot might think it's a Harley... :sian::lol:

Motorcyclist are the nicest people on the road, try not to kill us.

Well, I ever went in with a biker to look for curtains for his rented out unit.

We went from Perlin side to Taman Sentosa side. In the end, the one with the best service and price plus workmanship was at Taman Sentosa, a shop called Micky's curtains.

Go on. Check it out. But keep one person with the bike while you are asking inside.

Dun need to worry la, they see Phantom, they'll assume you're some uncle with nothing much but don't give them the chance.

Never leave your bike out of sight and never go to certain places alone.

Your Phantom won't be a match for their RXZs and Sparks. Best not to make yourself seem like a target. Nothing much to steal on a Phantom.

Is it only JB or whole of Johor? It is as though the place is so dangerous.

Hv always gone via 2nd link to Kulai or Pontian or Kukup. Not as bad or requiring the same security measures. Maybe use 2nd link more?

2nd link no mat rempit gangs, no where for them to slack, besides its too easy to get away from them in Tuas.

Had a recent encounter with these no life mafakers, we're doing out bikes at one of the shops in JB, a group of them consisting of 15-20 bikes decided to set up camp beside the shop. We went about as usual, planned to ride like GP racers when we're on the way back. Luckily we did not have to, I was almost out of petrol (bike went dry otw to pump station from bike shop), we went to wash our bikes and they were gone once when we went through that area to go to the pump station.

And yes, when we started our bikes to bring it to the wash area, they did started theirs too.

Actually, now that you mentioned gangs... I recall seeing many gangs of bikers camped on the flyovers near 2nd link at night, or even on the plantation b-roads. They appear to be racing late at night and keeping lookout for police. They usually get a little surprised by 2 bikes appearing from nowhere in the night and then too late to even chase us on their kupkias.

Ride safe guys.

One whole thread on JB yet no mention of potholes yet. Be on constant look out for them. Also for unmarked humps (same colour as the road) Next, some petrol stations require you to pay for petrol first before pumping the nozzle. Lastly, treat their taxi drivers like u do in SG. Bunch of crazy farkers.

You are right. Potholes that seem to appear out of nowhere once you are coming out of a bend. Almost fell over at speed last weekend cos of one.

Also, the markings on the roads arent very clear or make very much sense. Do take note of the lanes suddenly merging with the other that is swamped with cars.

And really watch both sides when approaching junctions... them Msian motorists may not want to stop. The prime movers and trailers, and tour buses also travel at crazy speeds. Sometimes on highways, will highbeam you while right behind you and catching up, and expecting you to go into the road shoulders.

Crazy place... but what to do, they make up for the insanity with the wide expanse of space which they fill up with mostly quite ok roads to ride on.

About road conditions, yeah, potholes, lots of them. Malaysia doesn't seem to level their roads so you can get filters on steep slopes where the elevation of the road makes it hard to see oncoming traffic. Other than busy places, much of their places are still lit up like old Singapore, yellow and far apart, some places not well lit. Other than that its ok, fast in fast out.

haha... u are right. but if u think what u have described is bad, u should check out india. even in the capital delhi, the roads are bad and badly lit. badly designed, etc.

and potholes are aplenty in the other states. if free, do google "bihar". i had travelled much via road in this state... abject poverty and several houses sharing a common light bulb outside as illumination...

I imagined India would be worse, I heard from friends how a shithole it is. Bad roads, bad drivers, complete disregard for safety. Organised chaos I imagined, still I would want to go there someday...even if its a shithole.
