By law we need to turn on the headlight all day, btw any riders tend to shift off the headlight on a hot afternoon?

once the bike is started, it's the stator that is producing the juice to power the headlight, not the batt...

so dun worry too much about batt draining

Depends on the situation, and how much power the light draws, and how much you rev...

For most lower cc bikes, idling is not enough to recover the power of the headlights... must rev then got enough power... that's why you see so many of them rev only headlight go brighter...

Any amount of "load" on the battery &/or charging system(alternator) will need more fuel. Sooner or later it will add to yr fuel consumption, when oil is at us$24 nor laasaa, if oil goes to us$100, u will feel the pinch !!!

The alternator is always producing power to recharge the battery and power your ignition and lights whenever the engine is running. The amount of electrical power produced varies directly with the engine speed because of the speed the fluxes of the permanent magnets are being crossed in the alternator, hence the varying brightness of the headlights in tandem with the engine rpm.

So with the engine running, switching off the headlights does not off load your battery or alternator. Leaving the lights on does not incur any extra load on the alternator at all.

But when your battery is weak, and you are trying to start your bike... it is advisable to switch off your headlights or at least unplug the bulb. Without the engine started... ALL the starting loads, the cranking of the starter motor and the ignition system is drawing all the power from the battery ONLY.

Push starting the bike normally works for a weak battery coz you are actually forcing the engine to turn thereby turning the alternator and producing extra electrical power to assist the battery in starting the bike.

So please... it is not correct to say that your fuel consumption will go up when you leave your lights on.

It is the LAW to have your lights on whilst riding for visibility reasons. $30 can buy quite a lot of petrol in JB leh.

Having the headlight on makes you MUCH more visible, especially at dawn or dusk, when it rains, or anytime visibility is less than perfect. The headlight on law is found in many countries where cars and bikes mix. In Canada, all cars must have lights that come on when the engine is started.

Turning on the headlight does not create additional wear and tear. All the parts are turning anyway. Putting a load on them won't make them wear faster.

I don't think you need to switch off the headlight to start. Almost all bike starter switches have two sets of contact points... one to engage the starter, the other to cut out the headlights when it is pressed. You can easily check your bike to see if this is so.

The effect on petrol consumption is very small. A 35 or 45 watt bulb takes less than 1/2 of one horsepower to drive.

For smaller cc bikes, you can turn your idle up just a little bit to insure you have enough juice flowing while waiting at a light.

for your guys info, my bro used to ride a steed, then he went to install a switch to on/off the lights in one of the shops in tampines. in the end, that switch cause the ignition switch to short circuit n the bike couldnt start. i had to rush to help him push start the bike. went to the bike shop and they said nt their fault and refuse to repair n wanted him to pay extra to fix. damn piss off...

so be careful if u ever think of havin a switch to cut off the lights. anyway, i always ride with my lights on. it's mre noticeable plus i actually tune the low beam higher so that cars will mve away. :cheeky:

The worst is still yet to come.

ROV can slam you for illegal modification even.

Any aftermarket part that you put on the bike... can be considered an illegal mod.

In fact.... during daytime... I put my headlights on highbeam.... so that drivers can see me while I'm squeezing through...

It's not recommended to use high beam for normal road condition. High beam will blind the driver and make them unable to see ur signal lights too. Drivers and riders will be able to see u clearly with the normal low beam on.

Yeap. Always ride with my head lights on. I've got 4 modes to the head lights.

1) Off

2) Dim Light

3) Normal Light

4) High Light

So its always on Dim. So at least don't have to make charity donation to the TP.

I definitely ride with my headlights on during the day cos it is required by law. Failure to do so will be summoned should you get caught by TP or any police officers. :sian:
