From what I can see is to try and change Channel in your wireless router first, as what ah786786 said. This is because there maybe someone using the same channel and causes some signal collision.

You may want to checkout what channels your neighbours are using and avoid using that channels. By default the Channels set on wireless broadband is 6 (if not wrong). See your wireless router manual on how to change the channel.

:help:

yes i facing same problem as u, or rather my gf sister

spend 2 weeks at her home troubleshooting the same darn router

in the beginning, its always "limited connectivity", so bery slow connection

brought my notebook along still same problem, reset the router

able to connect but no internet , broughtr the router home, same case, bring to office also same case, bring to my friend home, can use

i m unable to explain why, same default settings , but some place can use some place cannot use

in the end she called starhub, they came n fixed the problem, blame it on her norton antivirus ?

i was like huh? dosent make sense to me, cos i m using the same notebook at all the diffeent places,

well, this was the explanation given

anyways, i can only advise u now, to go thru these steps

1. reset the router, if fail

2. upgrade the firmware, if still fail

3. bring to other place n test, if still fail

4. as starhub told her sister, un install ur norton

5. go n buy a 2wire wireless router, lol

2wire is this (ugly) all-in-one wireless router, multi-port switch, and ADSL modem provided by Singtel when you sign up for their wireless ADSL plans.

I'll add on to Ah_tee's suggestions:

Step #6: Turn off any 2.4GHz cordless phones or transmitting devices

Step #7: Bring your wireless-enabled computer close to the access point (trial-and-error step to ensure that your wireless card isn't malfunctioning)

==========

Looking at your replies, I doubt it that Norton can actually degrade a wireless connection on a computer. The only time that it could do so (from my own memory) is when it corrupts itself, messing up every aspect of your Windows operating system, along with your wireless connection -- but this is rare.

I can't blame ah_tee 's technicians for blaming Norton Antivirus. They might be 50% right*.

The 2Wire modem is an ADSL modem cum wireless router. There is no uplink port for your cable modem.

Anyway 3-4m is not an issue for wireless connections. Typical wireless routers have a practical range of about 20m, just take note there is a blind spot if you are too near the router itself.

Sometimes security software like Norton or Zonealarm could cause problems in connections, but it occurs during the connection process when the computer is trying to obtain an IP address from the router. It's because the software blocks a new network connection until you grant the permission.

Do check that your wireless connection is not set to power saving mode and play around with the channels like what others have mentioned.

regarding point 7

the WRT54G has 4 Ethernet ports, i have also connect direct, but still no internet

her WiFi connection is okie, infact its "excellent" but jus no internet, even though the internet LED is lite

when i connect direct to cable modem its okie

why i say the explanation dun make sense, is because, i brought my notebook to all the test sites

my home- same case, excellent strength but no internet

my office, 2 units - same

friend's place- can work !

even if its my norton or firewall messing up, it shld not work at my friend's place

but it did, n i didnt do anything, jus plug in n use, i duno how to explain this

i did the ipconfig n everything is the same, so how, can anybody explain ?

Regarding your problem:

Usually, my best practice is to tackle the IP addressing issuance scheme first by proactively enabling DHCP on my router and my computer's LAN network card. I've found out that if you set the IP address manually, Windows can sometimes be choosy as to how long it can register itself to a SOHO router, so that it could connect to the internet.

Again, if you still want to go the DIY way, initiate a reboot after doing so, cross your fingers, and hope that everything goes well.

(As a matter of a fact, I've got plenty of white hair strands trying to troubleshooting network connectivity)

P.S.: I think your friend's network setup is well established -- you should've sought some tips from him if he's a network expert. Either that, or his router or networking equipment just simply worked for him the 1st time.

i already did everything i can

from dynamic to static ip,

i rebooted like 100times,changed cables, took out the MOL splitter,

even flash the firmware, but it still dosent work !

my friend is a network expert, but at his place the router worked flawlessly

so he cant say anything also, he told me the same thing, if it worked here, it should work everywhere, but the problem is , it dosent !

u can do a master reset if u wish to. but u can also try changing the channel to 11. if u are using a g enabled wireless card, change ur router settings to g signal only.

if all else fails, u can port forward ur router and create a static ip.

What laptop are you using? To access the router settings, when connected, under IE, type 192.168.0.1

User name by default is left empty.

Password is admin for WRT54G.

1. Check the following settings... MACID filtering. Are you filtered out? Or did someone go in and change settings.

2. There is a parental setting which you can set timing when one can surf and when one cant. Check that one out.

From what you have described, seems like you lost connection and has no IP, thus unable to surf. Do a IPconfig /release then an IPconfig /renew at cmd prompt.
