What should I do?

  1. 1. What should I do?

    • Get 2b and switch to 2a during NS (stable income)
    • Skip 2b for 1yr, get class 2a (save money for bike til class 2a)

Okay, so I am wondering if I should skip the 2b bike once I pass my license... I'm a full-time 19yr old poly student with no stable job.. I'm open to suggestions and advice. Don't compare me with the "need advise from riders who skip class 2b road exp" thread though. Because our situation is not the same. And probably pass my 2b by March 2013. Stage 5.01 currently at bbdc :cheeky:

Here's my situation:

  1. Only got 2+ years to ride til I finish school and go for NS

  2. Would rather spend on 2a than on 2b, seems like can get a better used 2a with the price of a 2b

  3. Currently I have a class 3 for about a 1yr+ already and got a family car for daily usage. So road-wise, I'm quite experienced?

  4. I want to pay full cash. Hence if i get a 2b, I only got 3.5k. How? what bike YOU suggest? i wish to pay full (Ins + bike) with that 3.5k

  5. Worry than I'm getting back close to nothing by time after 2 years when I sell my bike. This is my main concern since I plan to get 2a bike ASAP. If i buy 2b, I'll only get a 2a during my ns time.. If I dont get 2b, i'll get 2a ASAP.

  6. If I wait til 2014 to pass 2a, I will have more money for 2a bike..

Get a 2b... Better on fuel consumption and cheaper insurance compared to 2a... I suggest u get a Honda phantom if u can handle what your friends say about u... Because your friends may make fun of u... And some people cannot handle being the laughing stock... And 2b is lighter than 2a, so handling wise is better than straight jumping onto a 2a bike without 2b experience... Because the power is different from 2b to 2a... FYI, car has 4 wheels while bike has only 2 wheels... As u can see the road conditions are getting worse by the day, due to construction of underground MRT tunnels... The handling of cars and bikes on these type of uneven roads are different... Seriously... U have to get a 2b... After that, u can consider skipping 2a and get a 2... But for me, I'm riding a 2a now... Trust me... I been in a lot of Road Traffic Accidents in which 1 time I almost died... But I'm still riding because of my passion for bikes... Anyway, be alert on the road because u never know what the drivers are thinking... Ride safe, stay safe... :)

From all your 6 points listed, it seems you are already more inclined towards skipping 2B and buying 2A direct.

However, I agree with XxPJYxX.

If you buy 2A before or during NS, u have little chance to ride during NS. 2A has higher cost of ownership, maintenance and operating costs. Your NS allowance will be sucked dry, and you will envy your bunk mates who have no financial liabilities, unless your parents chip in on your bike ownership costs.

From your post it seems that you want to independently fund your riding without parental assistance. If cost is a concern, take 2B bike, skip 2A bike and get class 2 bike is cheaper than skip 2B bike, take 2A bike and class 2 bike

A 2A bike during NS when you are likely to not get to ride much is also a waste. Moreover, can u really wait 1 year to get 2A? A family car is not like your own transport which u can use at your whim and fancy. Unless your family have many family cars :)

Lastly, if you are concerned that you have insufficient money to get a 2B now, it will be even more difficult to get a 2A in a years' time, unless u chiong a lot of part-time job to save up. And then there is the higher annual insurance/servicing costs to consider after buying 2A bike too.

Just get a cheap kup..

I'm serving the nation and my bike help me to get home faster too..

for my old camp, public transport will take about 45-50min, while i ride home take about 10-15mins

and my current camp for public transport take about 1hr, i ride home about 20mins

To ride on the road, You need skills,Stamina, or even luck.

But to be a good rider, you have to change with your environment, and adjust yourself to its rhythm.

Before everything TS has to know why he needs to buy a bike and ride on the road. I'm not talking about why you need to learn riding, I'm referring to why you need to start riding.

For my case is I buy a bike when I needs to travels from east to west due to study in NTU. Public transport took me 1h 45 minutes, riding took me 40 minutes. I saves me 1h of sleep.

To me it seems like you don't even need to buy a bike now as you're not facing any transportation issue. Perhaps in the future after NS when you started working or further studies, when you need your own personal transport, then you need to consider again.

I guess I will get a 2b first? My dad insisted that I get a 2b too (:

Any bike that you can recommend to last til my NS days? roughly Mar 2013 til late Mar 2016? Don't mind working part-time right now to raise my payment of 4k-5k. My dad is against the idea of me riding a 2-stroke and I'm not keen on auto transmission bikes. Dad's been riding since he's 17 and he's now 47. And yes I plan to fund my own bike and not expecting any help from my parents.

You're right, I don't have any transportation issues right now. I do get to use the car daily because dad got his own bike which is easier for him to get to work in Tuas everyday. And I actually prefer taking the public transport because I like to read my book on the train, really. Suggestion for a 2b bike from the perspective of a full-time student? (:

I would prefer the following: kr, sp, r15 v1, cbr(old model), fz16 or any type of cheap motard? From the list which one would suit my situation? I know dad would not like it if i take the 2strokers. And i'm not a speedster either, i normally drive 80km/hr on highway. Which is more suitable for someone in my position. Btw yours is definitely one if the best looking kr i've seen..

FYI, kr insurance is more than $1k, sp I'm not very sure( might be slightly above $1k) and these 2 bikes the fuel consumption is high...

But u must think for the future... Cos if u get kr or sp, you'll tend to speed sooner or later... And that will increase the risk of having an accident... Not that I'm cursing u or what la... Because Singapore got so many drivers, some of them don't give a sh!t about other road users... They drink and drive, they speed (Ferrari), they claim they can't see u (dunno how blind people get licence), or they insist it's your fault even when they hit u from behind... speaking from experience ah... My friend got hit by a Malaysian drink driver, can't claim... The Ferrari happened at my workplace at bugis... I got hit from behind by a blind driver... And he keeps insisting that I caused him to hit me... Lol

You can consider Phantom TA200. It's a 4-stroke. Very comfy seat. Petrol consumption is very good. The cost to upkeep this bike is quite low too. You will only need 1 bottle of EO. Accessories for the bike is cheap too.

Insurance is definitely lower than all the other 2B sportsbikes 'coz it's a cruiser. I loved it when I was riding it. It was not too light and heavy enough to be stable.

Do keep this in your consideration.

Biking is something that everyone can learn and enjoy! :goodluck:

This would mean that you're buying a bike for your friends, instead of thinking for yourself.

If that's the case, you'd be better off with a nice looking bike, instead of one that serves the need of transportation.

That said, Cubs can be really fuel saving if you ride smooth and do the necessary maintenance, and the upkeep is not very high.

Driving 80km/h with the car is different thing from riding speed on bikes, some bikes have very accurate meters, some have marked up speeds, whereas others have marked down ones.

2 stroke bikes are troublesome if you don't give the due care, 4 strokes are not too troublesome.

Road hogger @ 50km/h on 4th lane

A bike can go up till 200km/h, can the rider go up till 200km/h o_O

Do consider you need savings in event you get a bad bike or into an accident.

Look into personal accident insurance and hospitalisation insurance.

Riding is hell of a fun and i never regretted getting my first 2b with 2k in the bank but with a stable well to do part time job.

Of course, if you can withstand the temptation, get a 2a bike. When you are stable.

2a bike alot of options? no way!
