During my limited riding experiences on the road, I have had encountered some taxi drivers with unexplainable behaviours.

As a new rider, I take efforts to ensure I ride in lane 2 or 3, and I do not lane split. But I noticed some cabbies often tail gate me despite lane 1 or 2 is unoccupied, then they would overtake me, and abruptly cut into my lane. I slowed down when they overtook me, so the risk of crashing into them after they cut into my lane is low.

I told a driver friend about such incidents. He has also encountered such behaviour and he suspects that the cabbies want us to knock them from behind so they can claim insurance? Especially I have a p-plate, it is more difficult to argue if such incidents occurred.

Did such things happen to you and is what my friend said is true? I'll appreciate any advice or opinions.

I know what you mean. I too am a new rider and I usually try to ride in the middle lane at the speed limit..cos the left side has vehicles entering and exiting and the right side has all the speedsters. Sometimes, in the morning or at night when I'm riding, I encounter taxi drivers who will cut INTO my lane (just a few CM away from me..) and overtake me from there and more often than not, the lanes on my left and right are empty and I'm left wondering why.

It really feels like they do it on purpose..i don't think it's because they want to claim insurance or anything scheming like that. It just gives me the impression that these guys are rowdy, cocky and take safety for granted.

i feel you bro. if you happen to ride behind a taxi(especially on the left lane), ALWAYS remember the 2 second rule, or maybe best 4 SECOND rule. taxi drivers dont care, as long as they see a passenger flagging, the would cut into your lane, jam their brakes. and they wont signal when lane change. and yes, if possible try not to lane split. i have been riding for 2 months plus(p plater too :cheeky:) and try my best not to lane split(unless the vehicles are stationary). if taxi drivers tail gate you, simple. apply intermittent braking, they would back off, let them overtake you. thats how i troll them  ride safe :)

I was once riding in heavy rain on serangoon road towards the upper seragoon rd flyover, I noticed the taxi in front of me was driving slower than normal and then doing sudden brakes, as if hoping that I come and bang him from behind. I wondered whether that was a part of scam later he can claim from my insurance. Luckily I was very vigilant and didn't bang him. Be very careful guys especially taxis. They would just love us banging them from behind.

Be safe and practise defensive riding if possible... Taxi drivers are always rushing cause of more fares... Keep your wits on the road and be alert of your surroundings and you'll be ok.... Drivers have metal covering their body... You have your body covering the metal....

haha.. than you are really lucky.. :p

Stay away from cabbies. Shitty drivers, the whole lot.

not really the whole lot.. I have encounter CMI taxi drivers.. But I have encountered REALLY NICE taxi drivers as well..

Examples

- I always signal.. So I signal right, a taxi driver was RIGHT beside me, he slowed down and ensure I have enough space to cut him in and I cut in while thanking him.. (a wave)

- Another time, I was lane splitting.. Jammed inbetween 2 taxi.. infront clear.. 1 of the taxi purposely cut in more and I can't squeezed and another taxi allowed more space and I managed to squeeze while thanking that taxi driver..

- as I mentioned I always signal.. yesterday, a P-plate driver change lane and jam brake infront of me while I'm riding around 50km/h. Almost can't brake in time.. I shifted abit towards the left land and the taxi behind stopped to ensure I wun change lane and bang into him.. haha.. I thanked him as he drive pass me before I ride behind him..

of cuz..

Bad examples are like what you guys mentioned above... & many more... :)

- Tail gating when lane are clear..

- slip road come out want us to stop for them

- turn left and right - thinking that we have to give way when we going straight... and many many more.. :)

i ride and lane split for sure... i will never ride in the middle of the lane.. and i never ever encounter such from cabbie or even pte car...

Indeed.. left or right side of the lane is the safest.. centre kinda of risky.. :)

i think centre of the lane safer, imo

for e.g if stay on the left side, car will tend to eat into my right side of the lane

but i always look out for cars behind me,habit i guess..

that's good habit! Because I asked out of 10 riders.. 9.5 doesn't look out behind.. because behind bang can claim.. BUT siao ah.. can claim anot is another issue.. the main issue is your life..

I tio "light" bang from behind during my P-plate days.. thus I know have to keep tapping on my brake to warn them.. :)

normal mentality of majority driver is to avoid themselves hitting anything in front of them no matter what...

if anything is gonna happen in front of them, for sure they will jam the hell out of their break without considering other road user behind them...

better be careful... :sian:

Maybe u all would like to join the thread " Today while riding " share experiences there... Recently encountered a comfort cab, first illegal u-turn and I almost banged into him, second time was less than 30seconds later when he signalled left into a filter lane but changed to the right of the filter lane... Some filter lanes got 2 lanes... I almost hit into him again, with my gf as my pillion... After he did that, he tripped my crazy button and I went crazy on his mirror, I helped him close his left mirror... A$$hole didn't even check for other road users before changing lane, or he did check saw me coming but still changed lane anyway... That's what tripped me...

cab drivers rlly suck. there was once i was riding on the leftmost lane and this bloody comfort just cut my lane without signalling. i was fuming mad becos i had to brake hard becos of him. he stopped at the red traffic light and i went beside him to stare at him, and he just ignored me. i went in front of him at the traffic light (as most bikes do), and when it turned green, within a short distance, as i was filtering left out in front, he overtake and CUT in front of me again without signalling.

these cab drivers really r mastards with a capital B. as much as they r useful on the roads becos they r one source of transports, some of these Aholes really need to be taught a lesson

all they know is, cut in out lane without signaling, suddenly brake, horn at us. all they think is about $$ without knowing other road users safety. somemore they now using the taxis(auto transmission) that has easy n fast pickup speed, which makes them more think "wah this one i no need signal ah confirm can overtake"
