I'm just wondering.. how does the raceshield here protects the headlight? Minor scratches should be ok but will it stop the headlights from cracking when hit by the small stones? The headlight protectors are there as a layer of density but i doubt raceshield offers the same kind of protection.. correct me if I'm wrong..

i think its meant to hold up against flying small stones. that was what it was built for.

P-plate should be an attitude to safety and riding. There's always more to learn.

What small stones? Those tiny pebbles? Or gravel sized stones? I don't think it will really hold up against those kinda stones. The film might be able to take it... but the shock of impact might still crack or shatter the glass behind.

What Munky meant was that... a regular pair of headlight protectors protects the headlights against not only small stones, but possibly large rocks as well because it is dense, thick and hard. Not to mention that, because of the 3M hard velcro mounts, there is also some space in between the headlights and the protectors to allow for compression and flexing after the hit.

A thin film mounted directly onto the glass face of the headlights will not be able to offer that level of protection should a dump truck happen to kick up a fist sized rock into your lights.

Think I'll stick with the specs just for the headlights.

But the Raceshield would be good for the rest for the fairing though. Will prevent chipping of the paintwork from all that road muck and pebbles.

ah good point... but for me, i don't even use either cause i can't be bothered. I'm more worried the stones hit me than hit the front of the bike. The rider cannot be repaired leh... :giddy:

Your face/head is protected by your helmet. And your body is shielded by the windscreen. Your hands are covered by the hard kevlar knuckles of your glove, assuming you're wearing one.

Headlight systems aren't cheap. So it's best advised that you also get a protector. They do work. When I chucked my R1 into the gravel trap at PG, one of the headlight protectors cracked... my headlights were unscathed.

If you wanna prevent theft of the headlight protectors, you can always remove them and carry with you, or put it in your box when you park your bike. It only takes that little bit of effort. ;)

MuNkyFooT, you are not wrong, but 1/2 right your the above opinion. Our FAQs section (http://singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139399) attends to the above. Below is a very generalized explaination.

1) Properties of headlamp units

Modern lamp surfaces are now made of polycarbonate instead of glass. Polycarbonates in nature are very flexible (like helmet visors & windshields), which unlike glass which are extremely brittle, or acrylics (headlight protectors) which are also brittle. In fact normal acrylic cracks easily from stones, get blurred easily from scratches, reduces light intensity with time.

Try bending/stepping your visor & the usual headlight protector. See which cracks first. This is a very common illustration from motoworld on their polycarbonate MRA windshield. Same principle of properties illustration. Small stones as you mentioned is VERY difficult is crack your lamps.

That is the main reason why automobile have now all switched to polycarbonates. BUT the apparent issue of polycarbonates is that they are very vulnerable to "pittings" on its surface.

2) Film vs acrylic

On the move, anything that can be thrown by mother nature or stones/debri from the road by sticky tires in front, is of never substantial size (nothing more than 1/2" x 1/2" which is already very BIG). Why?

a) The weight of stones vs friction b/w tires & stones that picks them up when on the move.

b) A large stone being kicked up is almost next to impossible.

c) The velocity of the flying stone great diminishes with weight. So does the height of the projected stone in its trajectory.

Unless your bike is place directly behind a vehicle doing burnout in gravel, no fingers crossed required.. :thumb:

3) Event of crash

In the even of bad crashes (touchwood), acrylic protectors or RACEshield fitted, headlamps will break/crack depending on nature of crash. But when scrutineered deeper:-

a) normal protectors are velcro'ed on. Many cases the protector will take the impact & break, followed by it WILL definitely fall off.

b) You will not be able to fit back depending on the damage of your lamps. You can't even ride back at night with lights on when it rains.

For RACEshield, yes even if the lamps crack or break, RACEshield HOLDs it together to ensure you can ride back from long trips. Added benefit in case of the worst occurs.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hence RACEshield provides equivalent protection with added-values:

1) no obvious velcros to deter theft. In fact, how to steal when you cannot re-use

2) ease of cleaning

3) no need to replace like normal protectors when they crack

4) holds broken/cracked pieces to ride back safely

5) reduces "pittings" which can see easily on normal protectors.

6) reduces heat build up as opposed to normal protectors (explained in FAQ)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Started this thread in the Accessories section, might tot of sharing you guys also)

Hi people,

thought of sharing some useful information with you guys.

For those who read the UK BIKE mag, you should already know what is coming.

I've listed down the short summary of the tyres reviews the BIKE mag did over these few months. Please do note these are basically based on the grip, feedback of the tyres. (Prices are quoted in UK pounds)

I suppose they will round up the tyres for a review again based on the tyre life also, as they mentioned a few issues ago. In the meantime, here is what I've compiled. Enjoy. :)

1000cc Sportsbike tyres

5 Stars

PIRELLI Diablo Rosso ($221)

"...quick steering, accurate, good on the brakes...etc. Just that bit sharper than the rest"

4 Stars

METZELER Sportec M3 ($206)

"Supposed to have longer tyre life and wet grip. Ace for stability"

DUNLOP Qualifier D209 (199)

"Ace rubber."

CONTINENTAL Contisport Attack ($190)

"Plenty of feel. Abit slower steering. Stable."

BRIDGESTONE BT016 ($229)

"Replacement for BT014. Feedback is total."

MICHELIN Pilot Power 2CT ($201)

"great feel from the front and they get right onto their sides..."

3 Stars

AVON Viper Sport ($175)

"Nice tyres, abit slower turning than some in the group, but still very good"

2 Stars

MAXXIS Supermaxx Sport ($140)

"No probs with handling, stability or agility. But heavier and slower to turn than the rest""

Sports Tourers

5 Stars

PIRELLI Diablo Strada ($180)

"loads of grip...perform perfectly"

DUNLOP Roadsmart 3TC ($180)

everything is very controlled...on par with PIRELLI...very sporty"

4 Stars

MAXXIS Supermaxx M6029 ($130)

"Budget option, but performance is close to others."

MICHELIN Pilot Road 2CT ($190)

"Fantastic. In all the areas-stability, confidence, feel & handling"

METZELER Roadtec Z6 ($190)

"Special emphasis on long life. Could take these tyres on the occasional trackday. "

BRIDGESTONE BT-021 ($170)

"Feel really stable, composed. Excellent sports potential and a competitive price"

AVON Storm ST ($180)

"Feel more like sports tyre than touring tyres. Very agile"

3 Stars

CONTINENTAL Contiroad Attack ($180)

"Lowest scoring tyre (among those tested) but still fone for normal riding"

Middle Weight

5 Stars

DUNLOP Roadsmart ($171)

"You will have to ride like a maniac on the road to find out the limits of these tyres" (DUNLOP suppose the tyre will last longer than the competitors in terms of tyre life)

4 Stars

BRIDGESTONE BT-021 ($189)

"Good, stable tyre. Felt quite plush, not soft, but they rode the bumps well"

AVON Viper Sport ($139)

"Need a little bit more effort to get them to do the same thing(as the other tyres), but we are talking at eighth or nine tenths here"

3 Stars

PIRELLI Diablo Rosso ($191)

Feels sportiest...but completely unnecessary for this type of bike. (Tested bike is Honda CBF600N. Like Super 4 lah!!!! :) )

MICHELIN Pilot Power ($189)

"Too sporty(for this bike). (I suppose they mean for normal road riders, it's pointless to use a sports tyre on a commuter bike)

CONTINENTAL Road Attack ($159)

"Feel stable and quiten slow to turn. Not bad, but overall not nearly as good as either the PIRELLIs or the DUNLOP"

race shield is still a fairly new product on the market.

how long is the warranty for?

Once installed properly, there should not be excess bubbling. Peeling & bubbling (issues due to installation) 1 week warranty. Go back to installer, 1-1 exchange only for installation issues.

Product warranty 5 years, against material defect of cracking, shrinking creeping, not covering damage from elements of the earth that is thrown onto it.

Yellowing is not under warranty. Any product of plastics/polymer/oil based has no warranty against yellowing (for the case of clear products) or color fading (foir the case of colored products). The reason is UV causes them to deteorate.

Thank You.
