Hi fellow bikers,

Any advice as i'm considering XR 4 Or S4 VerS?

My previous rides: A Pulsar Rider (27/4/2006), A S4 Vtec III Bolder Rider (12/6/2007), SYM GTS 200 (/12/2013),

Comfort wise, S4 is better ergonomically (for road use, of course). Maintenance wise, I think they're about the same in value but different in frequency, for example, XR4 uses 1.5 bottles of EO and 1 spark plug so the frequency of basic service to the bike is approximately every 1.5 months or 1200km for both the EO and spark plug (I may be wrong on the mileage) that is if you do not use the bike off-road, for off-road use immediate servicing is required. As for S4 4 spark plugs and, I think, 3.5 bottles of EO so most likely the frequency is every 4-6 months or 5000km (for the EO and oil filter) and 1 year or 10000km for the spark plug.

All these are based on what my friends went through. It all depends on the condition of the bike when you get it. :goodluck: in your quest!!!

You have 2 machines with extremely different characteristics and capabilities.

First, you will need to tell us what you intend to use the bike for.

For me, it's a no-brainer. The XR4 allows me to go play off-road, play motard, adventure tour, as well as commute. Super 4 is just a competent commuter to me.

Past: KDX200, LC4 400, LC4 620, GSXR750WR

Present: CBR900RRY, Gas Gas EC250, XR250L, XR250RV, XR400 (motard-ed), NX650 Dominator

for Ver S. Fuel Tank is 18 litres.

FC will be 22 - 23 km / litres.

Some can go like 400 - 420 or even more.. ( from some forumers here )

service after every off-road ride?

this is XR4 leh, not KTM.

known for its bulletproof and tough engine.

how come you judge the frequency of engine oil change, on the amount of EO used?

anyway XR4 also got oil filter. (change every 2 oil change.)

spark plug actually don't need change so often.

but since it's cheap, so why not?

It vibrates

Seat rather uncomfortable for longer rides (e.g. Changi to Jurong)

Engine screaming at 100km/h

Kick start only

No ignition key

It's a pure dirt bike that happens to be street legal... commuter creature comforts were never part of it's design parameters.

Agreed but it is also an old bike. Haha! The engine may not be as robust as before. Automation is always like that. All these are the recommended practice. It still depends on how the rider maintains and uses the bike.

The less engine used, the higher the change frequency, because that small quantity of oil has to work harder to lubricate the engine.

Further more, air-cooled engines are more harsh to oil than water cooled engines, which also means more frequent oil changes.

XR4 uses 1.8L of oil, which I change every 2,500km. If there are motard track days or trail rides, the frequency doubles. I use only fully synthetic oil, and change oil filter every oil change. Can't remember when was the last time I changed the plug.

Yes. It's kick and go.

So most riders use a disk lock, or wire up a hidden kill switch, or install ignition key.

Many dirt bikes do not have ignition key. There are solutions, just need a little creativity.

though i have not own a xr 4. but i have plenty of friends tat own one...

as for the ingition thingy it can be done.. but most of xr4 doesnt have it.. hide ur kill switch well. best is not to place it on ur handle bar.. if wan tips on where to hide it pm me.. dont wanna post here.. later who knows someone reads my post n go try..

make sure the xr4 u r buying the handle bar lock is working.. get urself a disk brake lock. if budget then get a pad lock.. always canvas ur xr4.. beware of project theives star... n lock ur canvas.. it may seems abit troublesome but not as trobluesome as changing wad the BAS**** steal.. there are big Litres tank on sale... can check them at http://www.slackriders.com..

xr4 is known for it's reliable engine... 2 person infact use it to travel across the world.. using xr.. forget the cc.. n of cos u got to plan wad u r infact getting?? more for commuting? want commuting plus some adventure n off road action?? some xr4 sits i try are quite comfy. but some are hard n stiff hehe.. depends on the ex owner bro...

n like wad dinie said... ya.. dirt bikes are among the top list of those bas**** list.. take good care of ur bike... sercure it.. better to be safe then sorry... n most dirt bike the fuel cap have no keys.. tat means u can just turn n open n some one can just steal petrol..

sounds hassle huh?? but who cares!! hahaha... just ride!!

well as for s4.. i have not own one n have not mani friends own one.. so i just leave it to the rest of the bros here to tell u more on this bike.. but for one thing i know.. s4 all kinds of pple ride it.. uncle.. ah boy, ah gal, auntie. ah beng, ah seng, mat rempits hehehehe

cheers n ride safe!!
