Bikes with low engine compression, eg 2 strokers which have a compression ration of less than 9.0 to 1 should not have a problem using low octane fuel.

It is the high compression engines of the current day superbikes that need the octane value to be high, at least above 95 RON.

Using low grade petrol will result in precombustion and detonation, resulting in rough running, pinging, and at worst, engine overheating and burning of exhaust valves and cracking of piston heads.

How much quality control goes into the processing of gasoline in Malaysia is anybody's guess. Hopefully when they claim it is 97 RON, it is so and not lesser than 95.

Has anybody ever felt his bike running rougher and hotter or heard loud valve tapping or pinging from their engine after topping up with Malaysian fuel?

If so, which brand was it??

aiya, dont pump while sitting on bike la, its for your own safety

anything happen cannot run....petrol can be ignited by all that static electricity in your hands / jackets u knoe

anyway, in the end u still haf to alight and walk to pay for ur petrol mah. and all that extra bit of petrol u haf squeezed into the tank is going to slowly flow out from the overflow pipe when u park it later on...

oh fyi, mobil n esso can pay using petrol key chain.. no need to walk...

somemore the attendent confirm friendly n might tok to you while u pump petrol. :cheer: :cheer:

tats why i prefer them... ;p

I experience bike pinging pumping petronas from 2nd link. But i do notice that it pings with the petrol if i constantly ride in slow speed, but if i rev hard during acceleration often, the ping stop, but will come back if continue to ride slow for a period of time.

Currently i m having a fuel catalyst inside the tank and it improve the petrol quality as it can transform the 2nd link Esso F1 into a sg V POWER. Haven heard the pinging for a long time, even if when i m riding slow.

what u say is true.. fuel tends to burn at high compression before the right firing time. octane withstand not to burn the fuel at high compression until the spark plug fires.

different feelings for diff patrol.. v-power responds v fast.. i pumped petronas patrol several times.. the vibration is rougher. go 180+ and engine vibrates like going to shake off all parts.. then pump v-power, and the ride's v smooth.

Cannot say I anti-Malaysian or what here lah.

But I have always suspected the ways their so called authorities ways of doing things.

It is corruptionsville.... money talks big time. If you have dealt with their police... the so called crime busters who are themselves the biggest crooks...you know what I mean/

Somebody in the petroluem quality control company there could have taken some kopi money from someone, who could then pass off the overblown specs of the petrol and pass it off as a higher grade to the next buyer(petrol station) who in turn pass the cost to the customers (read as suckers) as the real thing.

Sometimes the rule of what is cheap ain't good still holds true.

Dun flame me coz this is my own personal perception on life.

i used to ride the phantom 200 and nsr150sp.

nsr150sp - two stroker, compression 6:1 or thereabouts, need octane 95. :giddy:

phantom200 - four stroker, compression 9:1 or thereabouts, need just octane 91.

figures retrieved from owner manuals.

in sg i use shell98. in jb either shell vpower or petronas. esso or mobil (f1 or syn8000) gives smoother power but less of it. not sure y.

theoretically higher octane fuels simply resists detonation better. it does NOT give more power. the amt of energy extracted per volume is similar.

however somehow bike feels more powerful if i pump higher octane... additives?

Good educational stuff on octane ratings in simple language.

does tt means tt 91 is good enuff for all 4stroker bikes?

can anyone tell me the diff between 92, 95, 98 n vpower etc... thanx...

tat is y i used speedpass.. its simply convenient!!

as for not sitting on ur bike while filling her up, I guess its more of a petrol stations policy rather then an order passed down by SHELL LTD themselves.

The lower the octane rating, the faster, and more uncontrolled the fuel burns. Top grade fuel in Singapore are all 98, just that they contain more additives.

From pers experience, 92 burns very good, engine louder but the revs are harder to control. Important esp if you ride a bigger bike and a slight twich of the throttle will shoot you forward. I can maneuveur turns better with higher octane fuel.

95 is good enough, I find that I actually get more mileage from 95 compared to 92.

Newer BMW bikes by the way, can only take 98. If you pump 95 then a special anti-knocking mechanism has to be activated to accomodate the fuel.

im currently riding a nsr150 and i tried 95 , usually uses 98. 95 feels more smoother though but the acceleration is slower compared to 98 and the rpm goes up slower too.

j.b v-power or mobil f1..... in sg i just use 98 or 95....
