Saw a Chinese, wearing slippers and shorts with a Full face helmet riding a CBR929 (i think it is 929, any other model beside 900 & 929 tt i know?), number plate covered by carbon, all blacken, wheelie along Houngang Ave 8, and doing stoppie, showing off his skill. quite envy his skill at 1st but think he should hv rotten character to perform such inconsiderate action on the road.

Anyway, understand the fine for doing stunt on road is very serious. Good luck to those road stunt rider.

Just 'siam' the angmoh lah! It's just part of their culture to be young and stupid even if they're 50years old and they think that they are 18 till they die.

WTF???

So its part of my culture to to be stupid??? I'm assuming you just made a poor choice of words and didn't really mean what you said...please choose your words more carefully next time because what you wrote is extremely offensive to me.

In all my years in Singapore I've never met a real racist...I'm praying you aren't my first...

I don't find anything racist about what he said. There is some truth to his statement anyway.

If you're not happy about that, then you can get ****ed. I don't really care anyway.

If you really don't care anyway, why even reply?

Maybe if I said something derogatory about 'Chinese culture' or 'Malay culture' you may have taken it in a different manner. And as for me getting '****ed' there's no need to take such an aggressive stance...I didn't feel the need to abuse anyone so why should you?

Anyway, I'm not trying to cause a flame war here...all I want to say is that idiots are idiots and the colour of their skin makes no difference. So please...enough 'culture' talk...

What part of his statement is derogatory? Saying that its common for westerners to be foolish and take risks when young, how is that derogatory?

I care enough to take issue when a westerner imposes their so called values and chides someone else for the most innocent of words when it is not to their liking.

As much as you all claim to be so open, you yourself know that amongst your community here in Singapore, there is a majority who actively paticipate, whether intentionally or not, in making real racist comments on the locals, especially when a such group gathers.

This is a local site, with local colloquialism, don't come here and read into and assume immediately that its racist, and then, have the gall to imply that the person may not have a proper understanding of the language.

You started off with "What the ****?" in your reply without even attempting to clarify so don't even presume to talk me about aggressive stance.

Actually, I think he means 'reckless' rather than stupid, and believe me, I think alot of Singaporeans, although we may shake our heads and 'tsk tsk' openly, we kind of admire that reckless abandonment secretly, because it is something what our prim and proper society still cannot condone. Stupid is kind of universal word in our singlish vocab.

After scrolling through the posting, really got a good laugh. As a local myself... did witnessed before riders (different race & nationality) without HELMET manoeuvre within public carparks / Industrial estates & housing area. Likewise I could comment... it's their personal mentality, as what we commonly heard during our NS time... "you can do anything you like..., but dun get caught !!! " That it... simple as that, so chill-out... Dudes! Need not argue over this issue, all of us belong to bikers community... stay united! :cheeky:

Hi Andrew,

I appreciate your response...I've obviously enflamed the situation here which was the last of my intentions. Let me try to explain a bit more clearly.

What offended me was the statrment "it's just part of their culture to be young and stupid even if they're 50years old and they think that they are 18 till they die". That's a very general statement, and I read it to imply that ang mohs are stupid. Note that it didn't say foolish when young...I wouldn't have a problem with that at all because let's face it, nearly everyone is foolish when they're young. Let me say that if I misconstrued the statement and that was not how it was intended then I apologise wholeheartedly.

OK, I certainly wasn't trying to impose western values here...I've lived in Singapore for 5 years, have many local friends (a lot of whom I met on this forum) and I have tried hard to sympathise with local values. I'm not sure what gave you the impression that I was trying to impose western values, but again, I apologise if that's how it sounded.

I agree with your statement regarding a lot of ang mohs living in Singapore...not a majority, but certainly a minority do add to racial problems here. But so do many locals so let's not throw stones ok?

Regarding colloquialisms, you don't need to tell me about that...I spend half my time looking at the Coxford Singlish Dictionary trying to work out what people have said!!! BUT, referring back to the statement which caused me offense, there were no colloquialisms there so I fail to see your point. Also, I didn't attempt to imply that the poster didn't have a propoer understanding of English...I merely tried to point out that I had found his comment offensive and asked (politely) if he would try to choose his words more carefully next time. This isn't an issue of understanding the language...as we all know, without the benefit of hearing a sentence verbally (where tone, pace, and attitude are as important as the words spoken), it is possible to misconstrue the true meaning. Again, I'm sorry if I'm guilty of this, and I'm also sorry if anyone thought I was trying to teach them english...I most certainly wasn't.

Finally, beginning my post with "wtf?" wasn't meant as an aggressive act...it was meant to show my shock and surprise at reading something which I took to be derogatory. Note that my post was written politely and I didn't suggest that anyone should "get ****ed", unlike one gentleman did to me...

I hope this clarifies your points...like I said, I'm happy to respond to any criticisms, and I hope that you can understand my perspective now.

Cheers,

Steve

OK...I agree with you wholeheartedly...a large number of ang mohs here think they're somehow superior because they come from another country (or unfortunately because of the colour of their skin)...hanging out anywhere near Singapore Cricket Club will no doubt reinforce this belief.

All I can say is that I detest these guys even more any any Singaporean could...after all these people are giving *me* a bad name, even though I have nothing at all to do with them.

I can see that people here think I overreacted or maybe think I'm being too sensitive. That's fine, I can empathise with that argument and hey, you may be right!

Finally, thanks so much for saying that you hope I enjoy my stay...the thing is, unlike the ang mohs you mentioned who just want to get rich and then get the f*ck out, I'll probably never leave. Singapore is my home now and I love the people and culture here...I guess that's why I reacted the way I did...not much of a mitigating circumstance but I hope you can at least understand where I'm coming from.

Cheers,

Steve

OK, just one last point and then I'll shut up!

Thanks to the guys who were willing to criticise me using well thought out arguments...I appreciate it and I'm happy to apologise for misunderstandings.

And thanks to the guy to told me to "get ****ed". I assumed that when I left England 5 years ago I'd left behind all the Neanderthals...I'm surprised that even in such a well-educated place as Singapore where thought-provoking arguments are commonplace, there are still people with all the cerebral capacity of a fishhead curry...

And finally, getting back on topic...PLEASE PLEASE get the number plate of that idiot on the Ducati...report the b*stard and hopefully the police will throw him out of Singapore so we have 1 idiot less on the roads...

Hey Geordie Steve, don’t be such a big girl’s blouse and back down from your principles because of the nattering of a few nincompoops.

This whole thread reeks with racism. Why? Because the fact that Mr. Wheelie-Without-a-Helmet-Wildman is an Ang Moh, as opposed to a Chinese, Indian, Malaysian or even a frickin’ Martian is IRRELEVANT once it goes beyond a mere description.

The focus should be on whether people think stupid squid behavior should be punished by the TP or applauded by the envious. That’s the way it HAS to be unless you’re going to argue that only Ang Mohs wheelie. Or ride like a Rossi wannabe. Or ride without the right gear.

No, your original reaction to be offended by this thread is spot on.

At least one guy here obviously has a chip the size of Singapore on his shoulder about white westerners. I will never defend white racism directed at Asians or other non whites, but at the same time nor will I let the reverse pass without comment.

And if anyone doesn’t like that, well they can get ****ed.

Hmm, by now some of you are thinking all this is just the Ang Moh in me talking. But can you really tell by the words that I write that there is any Ang Moh in me? Your assumptions will reveal much about your mindsets.

The colloquialisms lies in the intended meaning of the phrase which is unique to local understanding than in what the sentence actually means.

looks like there's more to English than even what the english thinks. LOL.

This is a fun thread...then again, its only the Internet....

Actually, don't hold your breath.

The posts by Andrew Chang and yourself has so far been pretty "thought-provoking", which could be the intended purpose.

Certainly no persons "with all the cerebral capacity of a fishhead curry..." will

be able to articulate what was said so provocatively. Makes a pretty good debate if you ask me.
