continued running-in my little engine just now... rode for 80 km... better than nothing...

before that... I went to visit ah chong... since he have time he tried to sit onto my bike... and grabbed the handlebars for a while... then he dismounted and muttered a bunch of his usual...

only at dinner did I notice something... my handlebars are lower than my seat! at orchard boulevard an angmoh riding a cbr1000rr looked far more comfortable... its just one day... am I starting to miss my previous handlebar as chaoz said I would...? :weep:

now that I have a chance to test out my new rear sprocket... the change is... quite significant... now my gears are literall changed from 1 2 3 4 to 2 3 4 5... my actual 3rd gear can clear 90km/h now... but I could not accelerate at all using my 4th gear... the current clutch limits my output at 8hp...

still... I could imagine the possibilities when I one day change my front sprocket as well... looks like 140km/h wouldn't be too difficult...

and I have some figures regarding my fc at last... for this tank of petrol, my fc was 27km/h, a drop from the 33-34km/l I used to achieve with my previous engine... this is a relieve... with a tank range of 190km I can still take it out for some long distance riding... however... I would have to wait patiently for my bike to be unrestricted and test its fc at 80% of its top speed...

until then...

eh... vidak...

Hello!

I have been riding my phantom for about 3 months. My average speed is about 70+ to 80. Just last month I started going up to 90+. Once in a blue moon managed to hit 100, never beyond that. But last wk, I suddently developed a phobia on the expressway and can't even ride at 70 without fear of flying off my bike.

It's so bad that I will choke both handle till white knuckle!

The problem is that this phobia is not consistant, that means, on some time, I can go up to 90 without problem, but other time I can't even hold 70..usually at night.

Any one ever had this issue when they are new riders?

are u riding with gloves? if not, try riding with jacket and gloves... it helps... i used to be stiff in the morning when i go to work, coz its cold maybe... after wearing gloves n jacket it's no longer an issue for me

Come to think of it, maybe it's when I'm tired that this phobia thing happens, cos I never experience it during the day, but only during very late at night, like between 1-3am. In fact, I feel very good riding during the day.

How is it that cold, tired or hungry can affect riding?

I'm a new rider too. I remembered being a little jittery riding at nights (especially the first few nights of riding) because I can't see clearly with the bright headlights (some especially brighter than others) and hence, cannot make out how far the vehicle is behind me etc etc...

LOL but that's just me. Other than that, cold, tired, hungry, I not scared. The only thing that slows me down is stomachache. o_O

Hey bro, importantly is to have enuf rest & food! Live to ride another day! Fear is good, so to keep you aware and alert! It becomes dangerous when you become fearless!

Anyway, just to share with you wad we'd found out recently & confirmed with this morning (2.20am) experiment, is that our Phantoms (all most of the below 200cc) bikes are travelling at least 10-20km below the normal speed. Yes the Odometer is incorrect!!! I was using one of the iPhone application (Dashboard) and going at the speed of 90km/hr on the Odometer but the application only showing around 75km, hahaha... This is also confirmed by another PK using the same. So, not trying to make you go faster, but rather to let you know you are going at a good safe speed! Ride safe!

Don't do it to others what you don't want others to do to you! God bless!

... wow... so tt means we are very very unlikely to get speeding tickets at all eh? lol

Hahaha... I kinda know this question will pop up! If you're travelling according to the prevailing speed limit, dun think you'll get a speeding ticket, cos you're always slower than the Odometer lor! Hahaha... Ey, Saturday blink blink?

Don't do it to others what you don't want others to do to you! God bless!

yea... we need to ride at about 110km/h on our phantom speedo to reach actual 90km/h... :cheeky:

just as i always suspected that u need to discount 20%...of what u see on the speedo..as well as the distance travelled..

then all the 35km/l fc=29.167km/l...

this is really a reality check..:dozed:

although our speedos would be inaccurate... our odometers are quite accurate... I have to rely on my odo to tell me which exit I have to take when I am far far away... and I would say that the odometer is still doing its job...

Hmm...I've finally gotten to the root of the fueling problems my bike has been having for the longest time...now that it's all fixed it's a joy to ride...so smooth...think I have to test it out in M'sia to see how much better it is now. Maybe a joint test with Vidak...?

It all affects how your body and mind behaves and react.

When you are cold, your body naturally stiffens, reacts slower or shiver.

When you are tired, your body looses strength which makes your bike feels heavier, clumsier and less responsive. Your reaction timings also slows down.

When you are very hungry, it may cause you to shiver, feel cold, tired.

All these may have caused you to feel less secure and hence the phobia.

Though I've experienced the cold, tired, hungry while riding, it has never developed any phobia so i guess our mileages varies. In any case, when any of these occur so much so as it affects your riding, don't be a hero and continue. Stop by the shoulder, take a leak, get some shut eye or walk around abit. Continue riding only after you get your alertness back.

That's exactly what happened! I was so overcome by the choking up that I had to stop at the road side right in the middle of the night at 3am. Took me quite about half an hour before I decided to get back on the bike and riding again. But the sad truth was, it never got away.. so I ended up riding at 40 all the way back.. :(

But the next morning, I was back on the road like perfectly normal again! Haiz..

Night riding phobia syndrome..?:sian:

Yes, I ride with full face, gloves and armour mesh jacket, jeans and sport shoes.. abit overkill?..

I tried on several occasions to identify the cause.. Once I thought it was my riding posture, as I had been sitting closer to the front without being aware of it. Probably due to the time when I was doing the narrow plank at driving centre when I was told that if you keep your body towards the front more, it's easier to maintain balance on the plank. So I sat straighter and kept both my arms slightly straighter instead of very bent at the elbow. It worked! Instantly, like instantly! the phobia disappeared! like magic!

So I started to ride in my new posture thinking I'll be roaring down the road again in the night, only to realise that the new found cure has an expiry date.

shucks!

Still trying to id the cause..but I know it only happens very late at night..

guess maybe its like wad snapel said... ur tired... anyway u could also try spreading ur legs outwards instead of clamping to ur tank and ur heel on the footpeg with ur toes pointing outwards(ur toes will not be on the brake n clutch padel), its kinda more relax but try not to do this on busy roads. :cheeky:

I'll try out this legs out, toe out method. The expressway is not busy in the middle of the night so it should be ok.

Btw, do you find that checking the speedo when riding is difficult with a full face? The looking straight(riding), looking down(checking meter) is a bit of a balance displacer when going at expressway speed. Or maybe it's just cos I 'm new to riding.

Maybe the anxiety from expecting the phobia is getting to me. Will also try out your suggestion to ride in more casual wear.

I don't have any vision problem, don't wear glasses.

Have to thank all you guys for taking time to answer to my problem.

or you can try relaxing your feet on your pillion footrest.. very shoik also.. Do that only at night with good traffic....

phantom alot of riding pattern. just a matter or getting used to only..

Take a note from fighter pilots of old:

They judged instrument readouts not by looking at the meter as a whole but the position of the needles. Thus, a split second glance is enough to gauge your riding speed. Consciously looking down at the speedo indeed affects one's sense of direction.

Anxiety is the bane of all motorcycle accident, the more (gan chiong) spider u are, the least your brain is able to focus on avoiding obstacles or hazards, go to a NLB near you and read up on "how to ride a motorcycle proficiently" at the very least u can see the examples of how to overcome certain situation and react according to traffic flow...

but the best is still riding experience, only by riding, can u only be able to comprehend real world situation, the book is basically a reference and also sharing some inside tip....

Go as far as you can see; when you get there, you'll be able to see farther.

I just came back from riding just now. Tried the legs out, toe out method. Very relax indeed! I even managed to go up to 100 without feeling uncomfortable. Thank you very much for the tip, kmjoe!

jtzx, pillion footrest? I'll try that tmr night. But isn't the rear footrest very far behind? How do you put your foot on it? Step on it with the sole or hook on it with the top of the shoe? Sorry, never tried before so must ask first. If not later do wrongly end up on the road..:cheeky:

Kalyan, thanks for your tip on the meter reading.. never thought of that, very good idea.

hamsterwhale, thanks for the reading reference. Right now, I'm trying to clock riding experience by riding as much as I can. My short term aim is to at least be able to go slightly higher than 100 comfortably. Sometimes on the expressway, seeing the next bike zooming past easily is quite demoralising, especially if it was ridden by those very old ah pek..:sian:
