Previous owner did not maintain the paint work well, lots of scratch and also dropped the bike b4 causing the right side of the tank to be scrapped off.

So i gave it a go at trying to diy.

pics 1 & 2, b4 anything was done.

The putty work of the tank took a total of 3 days to get the tank shape back.

The sanding took 2 days, 1 day for the tank only and 1 day for the other parts.

Primer left to dry 1 day then sand again to smooth the surface for painting.

Total of 1 week plus for the whole project.

By the way color resprayed is matt black.

Yup, I used RJ London brand spraypaint.

I did lacquer it but with dull lacquer instead of the usual gloss lacquer.

So far after a week and been in the rain, the paint is still good.

Anyway here's a breakdown of the total cost of the whole job.

1 x can of primer - $4

5 x can of dull black - $22.5 ($4.5 each)

2 x can of dull lacquer - $9 ($4.5 each)

some sand papers - (less than $3)

epoxy putty - around $6

Total cost is only around $45.:thumb:

As compared to around $280  quotes by a few shops.

Its a gd job well done, provided da weather is fine and u dont have much scratches or cracks & dents on ur bike. Usually it'll take bout 3-4 days for a simple spray job. $100 is a bit low to get it done, i'll offer $150-$180 depending on bike models & condition.

Upzzz for ur DIY bro.........:thumb:

bro, do u hav anyway to prevent the paint to be eaten by petrol after spraying it???..

i DIYed the black stripe u see on my signature, but the sad thing is, it cant stand touching petrol. even one drop would cause it to dissolve and become rough.

FYI, i hav Sprayed it wif 2 layers of metallic black followed by 2 layers of laquer. it was very smooth but after wat happen, the area ard the tank cap no more shine like it used to.

Do u know of any laquer tat is resistant to petrol???...hope someone can enlighten me on this coz planing to strip the whole tank and repaint it.

thanks in advance....

kenNUFC & cool_bikers: good idea, but the part of sanding the bike is not very fun.:giddy: so i would agree with cool_bikers that the price would depend on the model

but of cos this is only a cheap alternative for people on budget as it is not guaranteed that it will last.

compfused: yup, i'm staying in tampines. what bike were u riding?

Dinzmetal: sorry, can't help u with the question as i've got no idea now as to how to prevent the problem also.

i think the only way to prevent the paint from damage by petrol is to be really careful when u pump, making sure that there is nothing dripping from the nozzle already then remove from the tank.:thumb:

Tats what i tot but my original red paint for my tank is resistant to petrol and thinner to a certain extend.

Does tat means there are diff degrees of paint quality coz the $4.50 spray paint cant even resist petrol worst still thinner???? :giddy:

Ive been very careful since the first time petrol touched and damage my paint job. but occasional it does and there goes the shine on one more spot  hope someone will be able to recommend a product to solve my problem...

all prices are estimate

$5.00 500cc spray lacquer

$50.00 clear 2k (the shine you see on bike)

there is quite a difference i assure you. petrol wont eat much into the clear but definetely will eat in to lacquer. 1st hand experience. to much time on my hand on researching and experimenting.

NJH - i did my bike gold when i first got it. used normal spray paint. it was a beauty to my eyes i tell you. colour looks nicer than paint shop. Just like your matt black. Tell you the thruth, quality of your job is tip top. but the dowside of using spary paint is after some time it will crack. between 1 to 6 months. after that send to shop to spray liao. im still not sure the base coat crack or the lacquer. but just giving you heads up.

hope this TS doesnt mind i post my project here. attached are my 1st two attemps at airbrushing.
