two other helmets im working on. one is an old school full face for my self. and the other is a nova helmet for fiancee try to draw a scouts logo.

the reason i do primer on the black is so the other colour can see thru. i predict i will run into alot of trouble doing the design though. stay tuned for project not completed. will upload when done.

I must agree with the saying u pay for what u get. $5/can paint vs $50/can paint.

Nice projects u have there.

Do u have a sanding machine to help with the sanding? Otherwise i salute u for sanding all the way until even the base primer is not there.

I would like to experiment with airbrush if i have the chance next time also.

Some questions to ask u, where did u buy the automotive paints, industrial airguns & compressors from and how much do they cost?

I have only have a mini compressor and hobby airbrush which i think would be fine only for detailing works and not big areas of the bike.

Hope we can see more people posting their DIY spray painting works here.

bro, do u hav anyway to prevent the paint to be eaten by petrol after spraying it???..

i DIYed the black stripe u see on my signature, but the sad thing is, it cant stand touching petrol. even one drop would cause it to dissolve and become rough.

FYI, i hav Sprayed it wif 2 layers of metallic black followed by 2 layers of laquer. it was very smooth but after wat happen, the area ard the tank cap no more shine like it used to.

Do u know of any laquer tat is resistant to petrol???...hope someone can enlighten me on this coz planing to strip the whole tank and repaint it.

thanks in advance....

No offence..But never knew there is any lacquer that's resistant to petrol..:cheeky:

kenNUFC & cool_bikers: good idea, but the part of sanding the bike is not very fun.:giddy: so i would agree with cool_bikers that the price would depend on the model

but of cos this is only a cheap alternative for people on budget as it is not guaranteed that it will last.

compfused: yup, i'm staying in tampines. what bike were u riding?

Dinzmetal: sorry, can't help u with the question as i've got no idea now as to how to prevent the problem also.

i think the only way to prevent the paint from damage by petrol is to be really careful when u pump, making sure that there is nothing dripping from the nozzle already then remove from the tank.:thumb:

Tats what i tot but my original red paint for my tank is resistant to petrol and thinner to a certain extend.

Does tat means there are diff degrees of paint quality coz the $4.50 spray paint cant even resist petrol worst still thinner???? :giddy:

Ive been very careful since the first time petrol touched and damage my paint job. but occasional it does and there goes the shine on one more spot  hope someone will be able to recommend a product to solve my problem...

Well, actually there r different grade of lacquer available. Obviously da cost will differ too. Usually to make da paint job more lasting & glossy, we nid to baked it, dats y u will find lots of spray painting shop recommend 2k paint and oven bake for their paint job.........:thumb:

all prices are estimate

$5.00 500cc spray lacquer

$50.00 clear 2k (the shine you see on bike)

there is quite a difference i assure you. petrol wont eat much into the clear but definetely will eat in to lacquer. 1st hand experience. to much time on my hand on researching and experimenting.

NJH - i did my bike gold when i first got it. used normal spray paint. it was a beauty to my eyes i tell you. colour looks nicer than paint shop. Just like your matt black. Tell you the thruth, quality of your job is tip top. but the dowside of using spary paint is after some time it will crack. between 1 to 6 months. after that send to shop to spray liao. im still not sure the base coat crack or the lacquer. but just giving you heads up.

hope this TS doesnt mind i post my project here. attached are my 1st two attemps at airbrushing.

U've done a gd job bro, after seeing ur paint work i mus say u r very detailed, patience and oso skilled enuf to do dat..........:thumb:

no sander...just plain sweat though i finished sanding down the old design in a matter of 2hours only. this is where i know i can do it. I realise it possible. then to really take the next step.

you can try chin wah paint at balestiar road. http://www.kangaroopaints.com.sg

you must get HVLP gun. got alot of places. if you really interested then PM.

your mini compressor must upgrade liao. your right impossible to do the whole bike. but you can always do helmet.

aiya if you really interested, and ready to spend $600...i will show you the journey.

possible to conduct a DIY session ?

actually yes. was thinking of it. do you want to organise?

i dont mind showing paint preparation.

maybe part of the panel of your bike to be sprayed...

say tank or cowling...

dont mind doing a small design for a small fee..

come out with an idea...

knowledge is free..

sand paper for me, i would start with 120/160 then to 320 lastly to 800/1000.

sanding is probably one of the most important part of the respray. if it's not sanded properly until smooth, your end result would probably be a uneven paint job.

it's best if one could sand until even the base colour is not there as in kirkjay's examples.

i think for the paint cracking part, is most probably due to either the primer or the base colour layer not dry enough then u went on to spray the lacquer layer.

give the bike a wash before spraying to ensure it's clear from dirt and the dust particles from the sanding before going to the next step of spraying

lots of prep needed before actual spray painting, so don't be lazy if you want to diy

Agree with NJH...

dont do a rush job...

like me...

always set aside a whole day, better without distractions....handphone, internet, work, TV...

i always rush at the end...coz time is up...hehe...

If I'm not mistaken..THe grade of the sandpaper is written on the back of the sandpaper..Higher the number the finer it is..What I normally do is after sandin it with a rough grade (smaller number) then I sand it with a higher number (grade) sandpaper with water..Until satisfactory..I'm easy so I don't sand till its excellent..A simple OK for me is fine..

The primer is like a base coat..What I heard was that it helps to make sure the paint stick to whatever you wanna spray..But primer takes a very long time to dry..After the primer is dry..sand it to make it smooth..Wipe it clean and you're ready for sprayin..:cheeky:

compfused i right, the grade of the sand paper is written on the back of it.

for me the primer has 2 uses:

1) to show any unevenness or hole which require patching

2) better surface for the base color to 'stick' on

i think zippo (lighter fluid) will do the job of removing the stickers.

but do u have intention to keep the stickers? if not i think just sand it together with while sanding the fairing will do.
