Have you guys ever had symptoms whereby your meter goes black during riding and with the ABS keep blinking ? and once your bike stops and die off, you cannot start it anymore not even push start..

I had this symtom before and it was derieved that the coil had to be replaced.....had it replaced in 2008 Nov.......n 2 days ago....it happens again......now bike at boon siew for them to verify.......

i couldnt believe their parts only can last that long ?!!

i asked them and they said their parts warrenty is half a year only....

Anyone had the same issue as me with a frequent coil replacement ?

Happened to me b4 but not sure if its the same cause.

It happened during rainy days, FI blinked, Meter went dead den bike just died and couldn't start.

I played around with the battery connections and soon it was able to start.

I replaced my battery and the problem was gone.

Only now and den my FI may lite-up other den that no problems

normal wear and tear for a 100,000km+ bike.

its getting more and more expensive and demoralizing to upkeep this bike which seems to be disintegrating. especially with the electrical problems. :(

I see... I'm comtemplating on how long should I keep this bike... I wonder where is the point which I'll stop being willing to send the bike for repairs... But love my vfr so much...

Bro, perhaps you wanna check the starter relay unit? I recall having this problem before on my old Blackbird. The meters went dead and subsequently, I wasn't even able to push start the bike. Did you encounter a burning smell before this happened? Honda bikes were infamous for burning rectifiers & starter units.

The unit costs slightly less than $50 & you can get an original from the ever resourceful Ah Boy. You can DIY and check how it progresses. Usually, I would troubleshoot myself using the manual by starting with the cheaper parts before progressing to the expensive ones.

Alamak, just when I was convincing myself to keep this viffer for long, I see such comments about electrical problems surfacing for a viffer which is few years old...

electrical issues are common among vfr and it's well known. but things like coil, rr, etc are easy to diy, so it isn't much of a worry. only problem is getting the parts in singapore.

you can reference vfrd for some troubleshoots and home-fix that's arguably better then factory fitted solutions.

The few mates I know have no problems with their 5th and 6th gen. There are initial "problems" with the fried rectifier but once you know the causes, preventive maintenance would solve it. So, ya, I would'nt say its "common".

I had been thinking about this for 2 years now, but everytime I still send my vfr for service and repairs.

So far I have not had my coil and rectifier break down on me.

But the rest of the problems are quite dreadful and repairs has cost me 1-2k+

HISS failure (left me stranded in Chiang Mai), Tensioners replaced twice, wiring melting (left me stranded in suntec basement carpark and its still a problem now), suspension overhaul, rear wheel bearing replacement etc.

So tempting to abandon it.

I had been waiting for a VFR replacement part I had ordered from the states for 2 weeks (whole SG don't have it!) and had been riding a ET8 in the time being, it's so much lighter, cooler and fuel efficient to move this bike compare to the VFR.

Tempting, thinking, tempting ....

well, going by the straw poll in vfrd (i.e. the community of vfr riders round the world), it is a very different picture. the number of concerns (complains?) about the coil and electrical gremlins actually spans a large number of threads.

honda usa had acknowledged the pre-existing problem and did a safety recall 2 yr ago:

SAFETY RECALL NOTICE

AFFECTED UNITS: All 2002-2005 VFR800/VFR800A Motorcycles

American Honda is conducting a SAFETY RECALL on affected models per the description above. The recall will correct a defect that exists in the wiring harness of 2002-2005 model year VFR800 motorcycles. In limited circumstances, the ground wire terminals inside the connectors between the main wiring and fairing subharness can overheat, resulting in the melting of the connector and a loss of power to various circuits. As a result, a loss of critical lighting or engine power could occur without warning, which could result in a crash.

you can read about the recall if you do a google on "recall number: 07V359000". unfortunately, no other dealers/distributors follow their lead. or maybe, the riders didn't complain hard enough.

for those with constant electrical issues,(items burning )

it could be a over-chargin issues ,check out nick "tightwad" over at vfrdiscussion,

he seems to have a "solution" ;

(1) engine off : battery @ 12.5v to 13.2v

(2) engine idle : battery @ 13.5v to 14.5v;

(3) rpm 5000 : battery @ 14.3 to 14.5 v; if you are reading 15+v , you have a overcharging issue.

hope this helps.

Service manual says change oil and filter every 8000 miles (12800 km). Seems very long to me... Do you guys follow it or do you change your oil at a shorter interval?

I believe Mr vfrT has advised on EO and oil filer change before. :)

I may be wrong, but I used to change EO every 5,000km or 5,000+km to 6,000km OR change once every 6 months, which ever comes first. (Don't you feel your kicking/changing of the gears are very difficult and "rough" when you have reached around 5,000km of travelling??)

Every two oil changes, change one oil filter, i.e. change the oil filter on your 2nd oil change, your 4th oil change, etc...

I don't know about the rest here. :)

Manual's recommendation is definitely safe to follow.

I change every 10k or 6 months I use Mobil M1 synthetic - shorter than the manual's recommendation cos riding condition in Sg is tougher due to the short distance and the stop and go condition.

As seah says, alternate oil filter change. Save the environment - do not underuse yr oil.
