buy from bikeshop will save you the trouble of settling the insurance by yourself. and there's warranty on your bike from the shop.

but generally buying from private sellers will get you a better condition bike at a cheaper price.

its up to you who you want to buy from.. its good to bring some1 (esp riders) along with you to purchase no matter from bike or private..

good luck in your purchase.

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

insurance very easy 1... u juz nid to giv the ins. co ur license date, bike plate(if u oredi noe wat bike u buyin) and wat type of ins u buyin(there are 3 types, 1st 2nd n 3rd party)..

basically of coz buyin ownself is cheaper coz u wont nid to pay admins fees coz u DIY... bikeshop normally charge a small amount of admin fees every year u renew ur ins..

I believe that if you are purchasing a bike from a dealer, be it new or 2nd hand, the normal procedure of buying your insurance would be handled by the bike shop.

Subsequently when you renew your insurance annually, it is better for you to head down to your respective insurance company to do the process yourself as you are quoted your yearly premium thru the agents, not by the shop salesman. Also, insurance premium differs from what kind of bike you are riding, your age plus any previous claims and the kind of coverage you are buying for.

If you are buying a new bike, the prevailing market interest is a 4% per annum. So if you are taking a loan for e.g of $1000 for 3 years, the interest would be 3 yrs x 4% = 12%. 12% of your $1000 loan would be $120 dollars. So you would be paying $1120 thru 36 months [3 years]. Simple maths right? But beware of hidden cost as such cost will increase your amount of loan and thus, increasing your monthly installment. Always make sure the salesman or dealers do not have hidden cost at the end of the contract.

Always always be sure of the terms and condition, be sure of the contract that you are abt to sign cause the moment your signature is down, there is no way you can reverse the transcation [As far as I know]. Ask a experienced friend to be there with you when the dealer makes an offer. Don't be haste in buying a bike. Always look around a few dealers before deciding your best choice. Putting your monthly installment + road tax + insurance into account before deciding whether is it a good buy and whether you can afford to ride and maintain it in the long run.

I wish you all the best in buying the bike of your dreams! Ride safe and remember to CHECK BACK before moving off. :D

Before going to the bike shop:

1) Have an idea of the current prices of the bikes you are looking at, best from the forum here, or maybe your friends who know.

2) Keep reminding yourself not to rush into buying a bike, and not to pay attention to any hard sales tactics employed by the salesmen.

3) Make sure you have in mind your budget which you are comfortable with, whether paying full cash or by monthly installment, not forgetting the $$ you need for maintenance, parking, road tax etc.

4) Bring an experienced person in bikes along if possible, especially if you're buying a 2nd hand bike.

5) Make sure you have a helmet ready when you are going to roll out your bike.

These are just some of the things you should take note of before buying your first bike. Don't forget to bring a silly grin to put on the first time you ride on the street with new bike. :cheeky:

any good reccomendations for beginner?

What is running in?

New Engine/Rebuilt Engine Break In Procedure

Run it Hard

What exactly is clearing carbon?

Hidden costs of owning a bike?

but seriously... apart from budget & liking the bike, you really need to think about how long you're going to ride the bike coz if you have intention of upgrading in a year's time, then no point spending too much on this temporary or transitional bike, unless money is not an issue

i added those in green...

known costs... you know they're always there http://www.websmileys.com/sm/mad/boese058.gif

+ machine cost & market value depreciation

+ GST

+ finance costs, e.g. loan interests, agreement/contract fees, early repayment penalty, etc

+ COE (7% for new bikes, 3.5% for used bikes)

+ registration / transfer of ownership fees

+ annual road tax & insurance

+ annual inspection fees for bikes >3 yrs old

+ seasons & coupon parking

+ general maintenance, e.g. EO & 2T, gear oil, spark plugs, oil & air filters, wash cab, brake oil, radiator flush, coolants, etc etc.

+ wear-n-tear replacements, e.g. tires, brake plates, sprockets, chain, fork seals, piston rings, gaskets, light bulbs, etc etc.

for scooters, instead of maintenance/change of chain & sprockets, we incur costs on variator assembly, rollers, v-belt, etc

+ repairs for damages, e.g. gearbox, clutch, fork, bearings, steering cone, seat cover, foot pegs, box, etc etc. anything that can spoil will spoil someday

+ any mods you want... wah, this one only limited by your pockets

hidden costs... you know only when you get them

+ parking summons... seems almost every biker kanna before

+ speeding summons

+ accidents, lang-gahs, buang, skidding, etc

+ injuries

Hmm... The run in part seems like quite a long story...

proper run in is very important... screw it up and it'll cost you a lot. i ever kenna piston jam while riding at high speed along expressway, its worse than an e-brake (intentionally) coz rear wheel suddenly stop/lock without notice... u guess what happen on there n then:faint:

after that engine go overhaul

why? never run-in properly... backside/hand got itchy, high rev before run-in is completed

One more point to add is on your preference in payment methods, I went to scout around and seems likes it varies a lot.....

1) Pay at shop

2) Send Cheque

3) Pay at AXIS machine

4) Pay on Internet Banking

etc

Hmm...

What about insurance? Could I know more about it?

Like what are the companies available and how's the policy like? I heard there are 3 types, 3rd party, 2nd party and comprehensive... More info on them please? Thanks!

And more importantly, I also need information on where to buy second hand bikes from shops... Maybe another place to get 2nd hand bikes on the net?
