Hi guys, I'm having an issue with my auxiliary lights. I've installed them a while back an they worked fine.

But lately I'm having the same annoying issue: the positive wire keeps burning and melting !

The lights are wired as follow:

- negative wire from battery to another wire that goes to the lights connectors.

- positive wire from fuse box to another wire that goes to a switch. Then from that switch, a wire goes to anoter wire and that wire goes to the lights connector.

The fuse box is hooked to the battery secured by a fuse on the main positive wre. Never had an issue with it and the other accessories hooked to it work fine, and are all wired to a switch as well.

I wonder if the first time the positive wire melted/burnt, if it could have damaged the entire wire? I only cut off the burnt portion, until I found a clean metallic wire and rewired it.

The first time I used the lights after rewiring them, they lasted a minute or less and stopped working. When I opened the head to check, I found the wire burnt again.

Fortunately the second time I rewired, I insolated it really well so it doesn't melt the other nearby wires. So it dint burn on the connection spot but a bit further up, just after the insulating tape, like the heat was looking for a breather ..

I don't understand what the problem is.

There is a 15A fuse on the line and it didn't blow. The wire burnt so much it's obviously not conducting anymore.

The very first time the lights were set up, their negative wire went to the bike's frame and not the battery. UM then changed it to wire it directly to the battery negative, toque the lights brighter. That can't be the reason for what's happening, right?

When I test the wires conductivity, they seem fine, so I don't get why they would melt...

The voltage out from the battery is good, the lights have the right specs to fit the bike's battery so I'm really confused. I have no idea what the problem can be.

My only thought is to rewire everything, but before I do that (it's going to take me hours) I want to understand what the pb is.

Could it be that the switch wires are touching each other and it creates a shortcut when I turn on the switch

Just went to LAB to get my gloves, raincoat and chain lube! =)

i somehow think its dangerous to travel at 65km/h on the expressway leh. all those cars cutting into my lane at the last minute to make the exit. ppl tailgating me from behind although i am at the most left lane. ARGH. cannot tahan.

and hey ppl. Other people might have a poor sense of direction. but for me, i think i dont EVEN HAVE a sense of direction. every road is like a stranger to me, anyone could help give me tips to remember the roads better?

Hey yhang23! Don't worry about every road being totally unfamiliar. It's normal! I was getting lost like crazy during my first few months of riding. A 30min ride can become 1.5hours. Couple that with new helmet pressing into head pressure points = head feel like wanna explode but still lost until dunno where.

Thankfully the more you ride the more you will become familiar with the common roads you'll almost always take to your usual hangouts. Don't be afraid to ask a fellow motorcyclist at the traffic light for directions! If the destination is super alien I will memorize the route before setting off. If I'm still not confident I will grab my iPhone mount and use my GPS app (or Google Maps app).

Hope that helps!

And I noticed just now that it's the wire from the switch that got burnt both times. Twice right before the connection with the wire running from the fuse box. Any ideas ?

burning occurs due to a few reasons...

your circuit may be shorted at some point due to no proper insulation or ur wiring is such that it just leads to +ve and -ve being connected at some point..

may be the thickness of wire is unable to handle the high current flow as 15A is quite high

Fredd. Let's say u want to go to ah boy. U stay at jurong west. Just moved in from msia. Duno nuts about how expressways link to each other but u still have trusty iphone by ur side. :) landmarks 101. Let's start.

1. Do you have a GPS app / feature on your phone ? If yes, use it, use it, use it.

2. Gothere.sg and google maps are your best friend until you know your basics. Check the route before you take off, and either print or write it down. To make it easy on the highway, memorize your exit numbers. Jurong west to Ah boy, you're likely to take AYE towards city then ECP and exit at Rochor Road. I know it's exit 15 and I know it's right at the end of the bridge that has a view on the new Casino.

That's what Fredd meant by landmarks: use famous / big nuildings or constructions to guide you. For xample, going to Ah Boy while on Jalan Besar, you know that if you reach Sim Lim Sqaure junction, and see SIM LIM anywhere, you're too far and you have to u-turn.

3. Study your route before taking off. Yes, I'm repeating myself, but i know exactly how it feels to ride here for the first time, a year ago when i started riding, I was a foreigner in Singapore with no clue about how roads are.

4. A few simple rules about riding and navigating in Singapore:

- Know your overall direction (towards east, city, north, west ?) and as soon as you're not heading there, turn back.

- everything is VERY CLOSE to other things. So distances are short, turns are quick to come in and very easy to miss.

- on the highway, exits and entries are very short as well, be very careful when navigating in or out of the highway, if you miss an exit, no worries, the next exit is your target, and go back via normal roads

- signs on the road usually come right before the turn or the street, pay attention and try to see the sign boards from afar

Also, if lost on the highway, exit and look for street names or sign boards, you'll soon see a clue. For example, if lost on ECP, exit and you see "Bedok something" on a sign, you know you're in the east a bit far, but you also know there's a way back to town without the highway, that's pretty straight forward. After town, if you still go straight, you'll arrive to the early West, Clementi, Queenstown etc.. continue and it's Jurong !

-> Take the time to look at SG map. It's a very small country and all the major road are quite long so easy to navigate once you know them, all you have to do is try to catch them or go back to them if lost.

oh Yhang, also I wanted to say: stay away from the expressways and highways.

Ride in normal roads, with junctions and traffic lights. You will learn MUCH MORE about navigating, about handling the bike, and about other road users.

I suggest you leave the highway for after you're done with the running in of the engine, it's safer. Dragging your Pulsar at 6km/h on a highway is not the best thing to do.

I have been riding my first 2 months and half only on normal roads. By the end of it, i was a bit anxious to get on the highway for sure, but i was also very confident in my handling of the bike, its weight, and I had a pretty good idea of how unpredictable road users can be. Whatever they do on roads, they do on the highway.

Coming back from AMK this evening, on SLE, this HUGE truck suddenly turns into my lane for no reason.

Later I'll think this was a Trinity in Matrix moment, but much much later.

I'm riding on the central lane, on my right, the fastest lane, a 4x4 is coming in quite fast, and I can tell he'll have to brake because the cars in front of him are not going as fast. Usually in these scenarios, the fast driver gets impatient and instead of slowing down, tries to overtake the cars from the left.

So I slow down to leave a gap between me and the cars on the right in front of the 4x4. In case the 4x4 wants to overtake into my lane. While I'm watching him, the truck on my left, which is now at my level because I slowed down, suddenly gets into my lane.

He probably didn't see me - blindspot checking must be for chickens not humans.

I can't believe this guy is cutting into my lane so eagerly, like I don't exist. I'm speechless and in slowmotion I see this GIANT metal wall that will swipe me in a matter of seconds.

Here I am, at 80-85km/h, with a huge container truck cutting into my lane on my left, and a massive 4x4 coming into the right lane like a rocket. I start swerving slowly to the right in case the truck continues to cut in, while I press the horn with all my thumb strength and the brakes gently (locking my wheel is the last thing I need right now). Later I'll wonder how I managed it, my arms/legs synchronicity is pretty famous for failing me miserably every time I try to do anything else than walking or sitting. All I can think about is "don't come closer, don't come closer, don't, dont !!!" and " stay away, stay away, stay away !!!", shouting my thoughts to both drivers.

The horn puts the truck back into his lane and the 4x4 slows down not really sure what's happening.

Once the truck is back into its lane, I accelerate to get away from him, while the 4x4 takes over the cars in front of him, like I expected, from the left. Of course.

To add to the fiesta, my exit is now closing in. Great. Hope that big a$$ truck is not going to try and play another episode of "Look, I'm Optimus Prime" on me. I manage to exit, and that's when I realize my heart feels like it's learning how to beat again. I feel like it's a brick of cement in my chest, my entire body is tensed. I don't think I am breathing, so I scream something just to let some air out and have my lungs work again. Cursing is a good relief mechanism. Now I'm shaking, but I manage to send my thanks up there, grateful for making it with nothing else but a giant scare.

Apparently road karma thinks it's funnier to get me into trouble BEFORE I leave for my long trip on the worst roads of South East Asia. If this was a test, it wasn't fun. Maybe I should just fly to Bangkok and backpack my way around. :faint:

how much current is both your lights drawing together? 15A is a lot of juice...even our bike uses only 10A fuse...

How do I check the amperage the lights draw ?

Also, what could be the cause of high amperage ? Is it the lights or is it more likely due to a shortcut ?

The only spot where I can think of Neg and Pos touching is a the switch. But I changed switch the second time, and it happened again - so unless both switches are not wired properly i don't think it comes from the switch box.

Elsewhere, neg and pos are separate wires going complete opposite direction, each on one side of the bike frame..

But Ill check again. I am looking for where pos and neg might touch, outside of the battery yeah ?

Insulation: all connectors are covered with plastic and I insulated the connectors with fuse tape. I'll check other places where I have wires connected to the fuse box and the battery but they seem fine at first look.

I'm such an ignorant when it comes to understanding these electrics stuff. I get the how to wire and connect, but here I'm lousy at troubleshooting it, because I lack the basics of how electric current works.. :shy:

what is the specs of the lights

they should put how much amp the lights draw at 12v

i suspect is somewhere your +ve and -ve touched

even slightly your circuit will short

it shorts only when you turn on your switch right?

The best place to ride on an expressway is on lane 1 on the left part of it or lane 2 on the right part of it. I have been riding on TPE day in and day out for the last 1 year and never ever had any problems.

If I was in this situation, initially I would be on the lane 1 left part or lane 2 right part and then seeing the SUV zipping, I wouldn't care I would continue to ride at my speed of and let the SUV slow down or move to lane 2.
