It's not absolute necessity like changing the stock tyres, but it's better .

I have not tested KNN - I think maybe MJ tested both Protec and KNN, me I'm still with Protec and so far so good !

So who can i order the protec AF from?

Posted

RPM normally idle 1-1.5. 2 if it's too hot. Rpm can adjust easily under te tank.

Idle speed is set at 1.5k at cold start, after riding for sometime it goes up to 2k. If it is at or below 2k at traffic then it is still fine. But above 2k, the bike revs a lots unnecessarily.

Which is your model? P180 UG1, UG2, UG3, UG4 or P200? If you dont know what is UG, then best way to distinguish is UG1-UG2 is analog meter, UG3-UG4 is digital meter.

If your is UG1-UG2 P180 then the cap that you fill EO into will have a dip stick marking. It needs to be in b/w the top and bottom.

If your is UG3-UG4 P180 or P200 then there is cute little glass window below the cap where you fill EO, it should be in between those marks.

The best time to check EO is after you have left your bike overnight and without starting it and put on side stand and front wheel touching the ground.

Max speed with stock settings is about 110kms/hr. But you can change the sprocket ratio to get a higher top speed but you will lose initial pickup, proportionately.

Here is the owner manual for P180 UG4, if your model is different, then there will be some minor differences, but not much.

Just wanted to update that yesterday after changing the clutch plate assembly, I noticed I am getting even higher speed at a particular rpm.

Now I am getting 90km/hr at 6k RPM. Earlier I was getting like 82km/hr at 6k RPM. Wierd isn't it?

BTW, I changed my meter also and it is confirm for UG3,but the speedo cable is still the same. I am wondering if the change of meter has something to do with the increased speed or really the clutch change is causing it

@O'Ren, Now I have got more or less the complete picture of the bike parts that you had uploaded the other day.

The clutch starter kit and the clutch starter body are both part of the magneto assembly and they are in the left side of the engine crankcase. The clutch plates, starter motor and the idle gear balancer(the gold color gear) are in the right side of the crankcase.

So basically most of the critical part of the bike can be replaced without even downing the engine. The top of the engine has most of the critical stuff which is the block, valves etc and the rest are in the 2 side crankcases.

So the only need to do major overhaul is when something gets screwed with the gear box.

Are you saying changing my parts did not need an overhaul ? That by only opening the side cases it can be done ?

Idle speed tuning :

EO you can check it after leaving the bike overnight on main stand, front wheel touching the ground. Look through the EO glass window on the right side of your bike. There's a min/max level indication, the EO level should be close to Max or slightly above.

Max speed: stock brand new bike probably 115-120km/h as a quick touch , not a cruising speed.

Max cruising speed that doesn't put stress on the engine is 105km/h there about.

im not sure my version honestly btw between 180 and 200 pulsar which one more fuel efficient?

No no I didn't mean that.

Your bike did need a top overhaul as your tension chain and the tension chain guide kit was replaced. For that need to open the engine head as well as the right side crankcase cover.

Also your engine had to be downed because of the drain screw welding.

What I meant was, last time when you uploaded the pics, I knew zilch about what those parts were and where they went and I was thinking they are something major. I dont consider top overhaul as major as it can be done in 4-5 hours

Theoritically P200 is slightly less fuel efficient, but practically, it depends on the riders style. 200 is more rev-happy so you tend to rev it harder and hence more fuel consumption :)

Yesterday again I noticed, P180 UG3, 1 Ltr of EO reaches only the bottom mark of the glass window. I just did a top up 200 ml more for it to reach the top. Just to be on the safe side, I think P180 also need to fill 1.2Ltr EO, just in case the eo level drops significantly.

Although the manual says 1L, I don't fully trust it. I feel they write 1L so that people feel the maintainance cost is low. For eg the manual says they have formulated an oil that can last 10k kms  and rest of all brands can be used for 5k kms which everyone knows is bullshit.

I feel, the issues with pulsar engine requiring overhaul more often than other bikes and it getting a bad name could also be related to this fact. If eo was filled till the top of the dip stick may be the issues would never occur. Just wondering o_O

does that mean the pulsar requires 2 bottles of eo? what kinda of eo u using wat brand? how much is it rev? that means next time i change eo i should change 2 bottles then keep the other bottle with 0.8 for my next oil change?

Hmmm..could be, but honestly I think the guys who don;t change their EO often it's not because they don;t follow the manual, it's because they don;t care haha..

If you care, you'll quickly learn that it's best to change it more often. I think if you take care of the bike, no overhauling needed. But as soon as the bike is neglected or used in a setup that she's not meant for, hello troubles. But isn't that the case for all bikes?

Sometimes at UM I see some Pulsar riders with bikes that scream abuse and negligence lol.. If you can't be bothered to wash your bike to the point where there is a thick coat of dirt all over it, even on the chain, why be surprised that you have issues with the bike ? Maybe it means you don't care to service it or anything too ..

thanks for the vid now i have a clearer picture of it,btw guys is pulsar a difficult bike to maintain hows the bike so far for u guys?

Easiest bike to maintain ever: take it to servicing at the regular frequencies, don't get lazy or cheapo about it. Give it the best EO your pocket can afford and more importantly change it when the right time comes.

Don't be mean to the bike: gently open your throttle, gently clutch in, gently change gears. This is not an off-road bike, a muscle bike or a sportsbike. It's a simple naked street bike with 200cc capacity.

If you follow these very simple guidelines, you'll be like those of us who have owned the bike for years and have yet to report issues maintaining it.

BUT not difficult to maintain doesn;t mean neglect it because it can take it !! I think sometimes Pulsar riders make that mistake..and once the damage is done, it's too late..

The bike will take neglect and abuse very silently it;s a resilient bike. Until the day it can't anymore, and with like any other bike, prepare your wallet that day :)

I agree that rider has a part to play, but just think about it, how come only pulsar gets this reputation and not other bikes? Never heard anyone say phantom is problematic or wave is problematic. Or is it like a specific category of careless bikers only target the pulsar, may be because its cheap to maintain. But then kups are even more cheaper. But never heard anyone say kup is bad. So somehow that argument of completely blaming the rider doesn't sound right. Not against pulsar or anything but just pondering over it and the fact that 1 ltr eo reaches only the bottom mark made me connect the dots, nothing else :)
