Ticking sound most likely cam chain noise, yes you need to overhaul, if the ratting becomes really bad. Regarding the push start you mean, pushing the bike or pushing the starter button?

the starter button is basically useless.cannot start bike at all. need to always kickstart the bike with CHOKE on

oh wells im sensing a top overhaul for my new bike

Hey friends,

i have some questions. About one month ago my rear brakes started letting out a high pitched screech if i apply the brakes. This started out ok but it gets worse as time goes on.

Now the funny observation i made is. If it is a cool/cold rainy day or if i ride in the morning, the screech will be extremely loud and irritating. BUT it will go away after around 15-20mins of city riding ie. (lots of traffic lights and braking/stopping). After that there wouldn't be any more screech.

However, if its a hot day or if i start and ride in the afternoon, the screech will only last around 5-10mins before it dissipates. These observations make me assume that it's related to the atmospheric temperature. But i am not very sure if it really is the case or just mere coincidence. This observation seems consistent throughout the one month or so that it has been happening.

My question is, what is the cause of this? If its rust, why does the sound disappear after awhile? I changed to a new brake pad like 10-12mths ago. At first i thought probably the brakes are done but while the mech was swapping them for brand new ones, i noticed the one i had still have lots of life in them. However, after getting that set of new brakes, there was instantly no screeching problems whatsoever, till recently. My monthly riding mileage is around 600-800km/mth if this info helps. Is there any preventive maintenance i can do?

Second question. My front brake feels spongy with little braking power as it used to. Brake oil looks ok. Clean and full. What can i do to fix this? For example if the rear brake never "makan" we have to tighten that screw at the back connecting to the rod. But how do i go about adjusting a hydraulic disc brake? Is servicing the only answer?

Thanks guys!

same same situation. changed to the brake pads uncle mj intro-ed me. the braking ability did go up but the screeching sound was just disgusting. haha. i believe too its due to the weather! after longer periods of riding i guess the brake pads sort of warm up already thats why no sound.

i rmb uncle mj saying something about changing brake shoes. but i kind of forgot. uncle mj please shed some light! =)

For the front brake spongy feel it could be due to air gap. Take it to any bike shop and tell them about air gap, they will just loosen one nut on the brake caliper which has a tiny rubber on it and let out a bit of the brake fluid and tighten it back.

If air gap is the cause then this will fix it, if not, need to bleed the brakes.

no problem on the sound...

its brake dust and maybe water in your rear drums...

when your brakes are not warmed up it will produce that sound...

get it cleaned and it should be fine until it accumulates again...

for your front brake check the master cylinder...

might be the washers there worn out or even your front brake pads are worn...

@Strawberrydonut please do go step by step like what MJ recommended. Or if this is getting on your nerves, take half a day leave and go to UM early in the morning to have it checked.

Or let me know when free I'll drop by.

@urabummer, if you have done 10-12months on the stock rear drum, and it still has life in it, probably means you use the front one much more than the rear. Opposite of me.

What alvin & MJ say is the reason behind the screaming sound. Happens to all of us, and not just Pulsars, all Rear Drum Brake bikes. Dust and water cause it, time to clean and dry the rear drum. Get also rid of any rust if you find any.

For the front, Do try to get rid of any air bubble, or completely bleed and change the fluid: Manual advises to replace it once a year. Even if it looks clean and at the right level, do change it. Go for a good quality brake fluid, even if seems too much for a bike like the Pulsar, it will repay you overtime with efficiency.

Also, clean your front caliper, have the mech open it and clean it thoroughly, after dismantling the pads as well.

Sometimes if grease or oil or something like that sticks from the road onto your disc and your pads, it stays there..

And last, think of changing your brake line hose to a better one, some of us here use a braided stainless steel hose line from HEL (available in most bikeshop like Uniquemotors, Motoworld etc..)

Make sure you change your front forks oil as well, every 10,000 km. It does play a role not only in smoothness of the ride but in your braking distance, how the forks react to braking.
