His lessons are good but start you off with contemporary, formal Malay. There's less conversational Malay in there though to get you started.

Just my 2 cents.

Spelling correction:

(di) atas - on top

* atas is also Malay slang and can be used to describe someone as being "big" or higher in status.

Some more additions:

(di) bawa - below

aku (informal) - me, I

kau (informal) - you

ade - have

tak de - don't have

(pronounced as ah-duh)

nak - want

tak nak - don't want.

tak - similar to no..., don't..., etc. Use to negate something.

terus - straight (as compared to left or right)

anjing - dog

boleh - can

tak boleh - cannot, can't

tahan - to control, withstand, to bravely take on trouble

nanti - wait

penoh - full

kosong - empty, zero, nothing, free (i.e. toll booth not serving any vehicles)

And the ending word that you will most likely hear, and use often:

lagi - indeed, definitely, (this) only, very

Examples:

Kau tak datang lagi

He (definitely) hasn't arrived yet

...nak tambah minyak ke sepuluh ringgit lagi

...want to pump ten dollars' worth of petrol only

=======

That's all I know of.

Please take note that all Malay spellings here are phonetic i.e. spelt the way they are pronounced. Not the official dictionary spelling.

Some of them are also compressed versions of the official Malay word. Eg, people use "nak" instead of "hendak" used commonly on the street

:)

Well, it's just some words that I've picked up during my years that I have occasionally went to MY.

I guess you can call it basic survival Malay :)

But don't ask me to converse in the Malay language. I stink at it and stutter a lot

I tried asking my malay friends to teach me but then they also at a loss cause they don't know how to teach me. Besides, I know very limited malay friends, since I have been in a pure chinese class for about 12 years and my previous platoon has no malays in it.

Raba is molest

menuggang motosikal - ride motorcycle

topi keledar - helmet

lumba - race

Raba is not molest. It means to rub, stroke or caress.

Semalam saya nampak seorang lelaki dan perempuan sedang beraba-raba di botanical gardens.

=Yesterday I saw a guy & a gal caressing each other at the Botanical Gardens.

Seorang lelaki sial telah meraba punggung saya di pasar malam.

=An accursed male rubbed/caressed my butt at the pasar malam (night market).

You can try this app on android, Duolingo. Very intuitive. But I am not sure if there is a Malay language supported. Good thing is it is free.
