let's all wear full suits, racing boots, racing gloves and full-face helmets everytime we ride. although will be very hot, but we can act cool. we all can look like we just finish filming legend of speed..haha maybe if we start wear them, people will follow suit.. like in Uk, australia and US,they were full riding gear everytime they ride.

 :D Riding like this at midday (12pm to 2pm) some people could die of heat stroke.

All that is gold does not glitter, Not all who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken: The crownless again shall be king.

I think one should at least have a pair of gloves. The very first reaction upon skidding is one will tends to support their fall with their palms.

Singapore road tarmac are built to be full of tiny bumps as to let the water seep thru and flow to the side. Just imagine those bumps ripping ur skin apart from ur palm.. *ouch*

100% agree. The first thing anyone does when they dump a bike is to stretch out their hands to cushion the body against impact. It's instinctive behaviour.

Proper jackets, however, are a pain. Armoured cordura jackets are too bulky. Good leather jackets are too damn expensive.

Heat isn't a big problem on long trips. First, you sweat. Then the sweat will cool you down once you're on the move. But if you're riding to work, it doesn't do your appearance any favours at meetings esp. if you're the sweaty type :p :p :p

On short trips, the bulk of the gear becomes more annoying than the heat. My biggest problem is the amazing amount of dirt that your face and neck collect after a day in city traffic. Talk about soiled collars!

Me after my first practice in the PG track then I realised protective gears are really important!!! They may not be able to protect you like last time Ancient Martial Arts show those..... 'Dao Qiang Bu Lu'...... But at least they would be able to help absorb some impact or shock to you and your precious body.....

Right now for me... I can't or don't know how to ride without my full-face and gloves liao..... Later when got more money... buy a set of full-suit and touring jacket with boots... me should be able to feel more secure then....

You can ride fast, but if you can't stop in time.. You will have to stay in Blk 9!

Ok.. I've read a lot of replies regarding this issue and don't mind me saying a few words. Basically, when I ride, jacket, gloves, full face helmet, boots and long pants are essential.

These are IMHO:

Gloves:because as you guys has said it, we have human instinct to break our fall by stretching our hand outwards. Thus, we may have injured our hands thru the fall. Therefore, pair of gloves would help. I've got a biker that got his finger amputated during riding as something flew and hit his finger. Good thing he was wearing his gloves as the amputated part was brought to the hospital for the drs to attach back. Therefore, let's keep our gloves on when we are riding.

Jacket: I would say at least thick denim jacket if you are not that keen to wear armour jacket in town riding. I would not advice on windbreaker as the material is thin and once u come down with it, it would have been torn and you would still sustain abrasions with it. A denim is a good choice as the material is definitely thicker than windbreaker and if u hv a thick denim jacket, it would help to lessen the extend of your injury. Of course, the denim jacket is long sleeve, not sleeveless.

Full face helmet: this is because if u use half face, the visor may crack and the cracked visor may injure your face and that would mean a lot of cosmetic surgery. A full face helmet decrease chances of face injury.

Boots: I would say that laceless boots are safest. I understand guys would use your SAF boots. However, they are laces and the chances of having your lace tangled to your pedastal is there. Thus, it's a potential hazard. You may be hurt as your lace got tangle and you can put your foot down. Secondly, should there be an accident and your foot is tangle due to your lace, paramedics/first aiders have to distangle you by cutting your laces before they can help you with your injury. Thirdly, when accident occur, you could not 'throw' the bike to save yourself as you are tangled to your bike. Imagine you skidded and are tangle to your bike and there are on-coming vehicles. You can't gurantee that this vehicle don't bang into you. Therefore, try and wear laceless boots. Lastly, don't wear open toes sandals as injuries to our toes are high too as it's the nearest part of our body that will be dragged on the road in any accident/skidding.

Long pants: Usually denim long pants or thick material long pants. Again, we want to lessen our pain suffering. This is because if skid/accident and was dragged, our exposed body/limbs will be injured. With clothing, we hope to lessen our own suffering.

Therefore, if it doesn't sound practical to wear armour jacket's and pants, let us do our own part in lessen our own suffering should we meet with one unfortunate incident.

Last but not least, practise safe and defensive riding is another way to lessen the accidents on the road. Let's think of our love ones before we speed, tailgate or even overtaking...

Some of you guys might be interested in this jacket...

http://mc.mttech.com/spidinet/spidi_net_back.jpg

Its a Spidi Net jacket and I bought one a few years ago for riding in Singapore. It comes with fully armoured shoulders and elbows, and uses a really tough fabric in the important places, but the rest of it (the shiny material in the photo) is made of a few layers of a net-like material so the ventilation is excellent.

However, if you're stuck in traffic the ventilation is obviously useless and the jacket makes you *really* hot and sweaty (perhaps black isn't the ideal colour!!!). I think there's a newer model out now with a choice of colours.

Not sure if you can get them in Singapore...I bought mine from a British website (http://www.customlids.co.uk) but I just checked and they don't sell it any more.

Does anyone have a better jacket than this? I'd be interested to know if you have!

You have a very nice jacket there, especially the CE99 protectors.

I think you are a firm believer in motorcycle protective gears after seeing the crash photos of yours.

I like the mini air compressor too, very handy

may I know can we get those in Singapore?

It doesn't make any difference whether a motorcyclist has the right-of-way or not, the rider is the one most likely to get hurt.

i mostly ride with a fully armor leather jacket on the roads and go on the track with complete protection.

when i ride, i will wear my fullface and leather gloves at least. the gloves have saved my palms for countless times.
