BANGKOK, June 7 (TNA) ? Thailand will speed up negotiations with China for a final conclusion in a project to build the third bridge across the Mekong River so that it can be used as a key transport route between both countries through Laos, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board.

Speaking here Wednesday of progress in the Greater Mekong Sub-region cooperation between six member countries, including China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand, NESDB?s Deputy Secretary-General Arkom Termpittayapaisith said all parties concerned had stepped up efforts to negotiate for common rules on border-crossing product fee collection to reduce transport costs as much as possible.

At present, he said entrepreneurs had complained that fees on the border-crossing transport of products from Thailand to China remain very high.

Should the problem be solved, the transport costs will reduce considerably.

At the same time, he said officials concerned had accelerated developing a product transport route between Thailand and China through Laos, starting from Thailand?s Chiang Kong District in northern Chiang Rai Province to Laos? Huay Sai.

Currently, China has also developed a transport route from Kunming to Laos? Luang Nam Tha and co-invested with Thailand and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in building a road linking China, Laos and Thailand.

However, the project could not yet be fully implemented because it needs to wait for the construction of the third bridge across the Mekong River that links Thailand and Laos, starting from Chiang Kong District and Huay Sai, he noted.

The new bridge construction project is under negotiation in terms of budget allocation since Thailand wants China to share the budget in the same amount.

However, China viewed the construction budget of US$44 million was too high.

Later, the budget was cut to around US$30 million. But China has not yet shared the approval.

It is under negotiations, which are expected to be finalized soon.

Mr. Arkom said he believed the transport route, if completely linked, would help boost bilateral trade value between China and Thailand considerably.

if i am not wrong, there are big bikes in china too. It is just that alot more people ride small bikes than big bikes. Cause i saw those china biking websites with big bikes before. But just dunno why they do not allow big bikes to enter.

hahaha... they really said that???

>>>>>>>>> hey, i also encounter something similar... i flew to vietnam, rent a bike and wanted to ride into china. however, at the borders of vietnam and china, i was NOT ALLOW to enter china too... And the bike that i was riding was only a 125cc bike. not even a big bike. Wonder why is that so.....

As of now, China still DOES NOT allow foreigners to ENTER China with a foreign vehicle. This means that driving a car into China is also not allowed.

The only practical way to drive or ride in China is to FLY into China first and rent a local bike there. Be prepared to hire a local guide on a bike to accompany you. This is a mandatory requirement that must be met before a foreigner can legally ride in China. Or you can join a tour organise by a local Chinese bike tour agency that has been mentioned in this forum if you do not want to do a solo ride and couldn't be bothered to plan the logistics yourself.

Thai Immigration changes the rules for all foreigners

Thursday, 04 December 2008

30-days border runs now only 15 days

In order to limit the amount of foreigners using "back-to-back" border runs, Thai Immigration has issued a new regulation regarding the 30 days tourist exemption.

Effective immediately, travellers without visa will get only 15 days of stay if they are arriving via a land border checkpoint from a neighboring country.

Discuss this news in our forum:

Passengers arriving via an international airport will obtain a 30 days stay, and for them there is no change.

Travellers with Malaysian passports will obtain a 30 days stay.

This police order number 778/2551 is today confirmed by Royal Thai Police, Immigration Bureau, in Bangkok.
