A good player is bred...you can teach him all the basics of the game...

A great player is born...you cant teach him how to be at the right place at the right time & to do the right thing....

A good player works hard, runs everywhere for 90 mins...and the match ends 0-0...

A great player plays pedestrian for 89 mins...but he gives 1 moment of brillance...and the match ends 1-0...

ideas?

thoughts?

A great player plays pedestrian for 89 mins...but he gives 1 moment of brillance...and the match ends 1-0...

This line reminds me of the 2001. During Liverpool FC's Treble cup run. The FA Cup final at Cardiff. Arsenal took the lead through Ljundberg and put the Kop's dream of a treble a major dent. Then Owen, sleeping and a pedestrian for most of 80 minutes, suddenly woke up and scored 2 fantastic goals in the space of 10 minutes to seal the Cup.

On a similar note, was Arsenal vs Chelsea in 1999. Vialli's men took the lead with 2 goals at half time. Wenger shoved Kanu in during the last 20 mins and he scored a hat-trick within 15 mins to seal the game.

The final score:

Chelsea 2 - 3 Kanu

That Gerrard guy's kick damn powerful man. Quite a distance from the goal post but still can score... :thumb:

back on the gerrard issue....

im a liverpool fan through & through...stated it many times...

but i think gerrard hasnt reached the level of greatness yet...at least to me...

no doubt he works hard for the team..and has tremendous shooting ability...

he still lacks something...the ability to conjure something out of nothing for his teammates...

a lot of great players are great because of what they can do for their teammates...like zidane, ronaldino, maradona, platini...

and because of money...he nearly left liverpool...not once...but twice...

Lampard?

For the love of God...

If you've seen most of his goals on the highlights show, I can safely bet over 80% of his shots require a deflection somewhere to go into goal.

Damn right his shots are accurate. Accurate right into the keeper's hands.

I may sound biased against a Chelsea player (well, I am a Liverpudlian fan after all) but after that match against T&T, even my best friend (a hardcore Spurs fan and extreme anti-Liverpool) had to agree that putting Fat Frank as attacking midfielder won't get England anywhere. One opportunity for Gerrard to go up front with the ball on his own and he gets a fantastic goal past Shaka Hislop.

Was it just me or did Gerrard score again?

Unfortunately due to setting my handphone to Silent mode despite setting the alarm clock, I missed the match. But was able to catch the highlights.

hahaha wildcard....

if my eyes & ears didnt fail me....according to some statistics...lampard has taken the most number of shots at goal this world cup....(not very sure it is for england only or comparing with every player at the world cup)

but how many did he score?

this will serve to prove james wrong...

a few great players come to my mind...

1. maradona! my fav player of all time

2. zinedane zidane (fav player now.retiring though)

3. michel platini

4. johan cryuff

5. pele

6. denis bergkamp (not really there...but still a darn good player)

7. franz beckenbauer (not sure of the spelling...)

8. Zico (the white pele, current japan coach)

9. marco van basten

notice that quite a number of these players are playmakers...cos they are the ones that can create something out of nothing...or even score themselves...

anyone else comes to mind?

From this list, I pick Beckenbauer coz of something I saw a long time ago and something I extracted from wikipedia.org:

He became captain of the national side from 1971, following the disappointing semi-final of the 1970 World Cup during which he was injured. His injury did not deter him from partcipating in the match and he took the field against Italy carrying his dislocated arm in a sling. The result of this match was 4-3 (after extra time) in favour of the Italians and Germany had to settle for third place

Remembered that documentary. Beckenbauer dislocated his shoulder in that match. But with the responsibility of the country on his shoulders (or rather, one good shoulder), he put on a sling to immobilize his arm and carried on playing through the pain barrier.

Looking at the recent World Cups, its gonna be hard or even impossible to find such passion & dedication...

ronaldinho also not there yet...too early to say...

he hasnt done enough...especially at on the biggest stage of all...the world cup...

so lets wait for a this world cup to be over...or maybe even next world cup to determine whether he deserves to be called a good or a great...
