I rode to Penang and back on a DragStar 400 before. Maybe I pushed the bike too hard by riding at hours at a stretch....

The bike was leaking before I reached Penang. Fortunately, there is a bike shop in Penang that was able to manage the leak until I arrived back to Singapore.

I think it's safer to attempt this over 2 days, and have enough stops for the engine and oil to cool down. Remember that the bike is air-cooled and you can't monitor engine temperature, so it's best to ride it easy.

Let go.... let God....

what he meant is something called Duct Tape (DUCK tape for the ang mohs) Its like masking tape except with threads inside. useful for patching up broken bits of bike as it has very good holding ability. avalable in rolls for S$1+ each

Riding alone you will have freedom to do what you wants without having to accomodate to other people's.

But in times of emergency, you will be alone to solve it.

Long distance on a bike without enough rest will only invites trouble.

Go for a 300km ride first to experience the boredom of riding on the highway and see whether you likes it or not

It doesn't make any difference whether a motorcyclist has the right-of-way or not, the rider is the one most likely to get hurt.

wah 300km on our highway? But your advice sounds good, it's a test not only on a person's endurance, but whether the bike will give trouble riding none stop for 300km or not.

I've never rode up to thailand or even Malaysia before, but was thinking of doing a trip to thailand, phuket end year. I'm riding a classic vespa(have to fill up every 150km leh)... I see breakdowns on malaysia highway in my future. haha.

Anyway, good advice there. I think I'll try that someday soon.

Yeah. I'm also keen to know:

1) What to do in case of bike breakdown in MY? TH?

2) What to do in case of accident in MY? Without injuries? With injuries?

Helplines?

Police?

Towing service?

Bike shops?

Hospitals / Clinics?

Ambulance?

Insurance companies ... local ... overseas branch?

With auto-roam, do we just call SG, MY & TH tel. no.s as they are without pre-fixes? SMSes included?

Anything else?

Thanks.

Read this book titled Catfish and Mandala not long ago. It's about a guy who rides solo on a bicycle in Vietnam in search of his roots. Here's an excerpt:

“Touring solo on a bicycle, I discover, is an act of stupidity or an act of divine belief. It is intense stretches of isolation punctuated with flashes of pure terror and indelible moments of friendship. Mostly, it is dirty work particularly suitable for the stubborn masochist. I was suckered into the adventure, the elegant simplicity of its execution, and, yes, even the glory of its agony.”

I guess those who rides solo have to agree with the author to some extent. :)

I tried a small trip up on my own to malaysia, near KL with my dr200. On my opinion Malaysia Cars are actually slower than singapore cars.
