I think I can relate to his mum's anguish. And I better appreciate my mum's worry everytime I ride up. For I am all my mum has. I'm 29 too. I think I know what to do now. I hope LollyPop is adequately covered so that his mum has one less thing to worry about. And I really hope she can recover from this tragedy though it may take a while. My sincere and deepest condolences to her. RIP fellow rider.

report is not accurate

they are on their way to Betong and not Hatyai.

This is not the first time he has ridden with this group of riders..He has been riding with us since 2005 or 2006, when he was still riding a fz6. But this is the first time my riding group is going to Betong.

the additional inform is not correct. His mother and family members return on a coach the same day, the rest of the riders were too tired and stayed over before returning the next day. But before the family arrived, they did their best and what they can to arrange our fallen friend to return to signapore asap so that the faimly members need not stay a day to do the necessary arrangement.

no one can accept how and why the accident happen but we like to leave it as how the police report was written

First of all my condolence to the family of Bro Loli. RIP to Bro Loli. The grp overtook me before the tunnel. They were definitely not fast, 2 FJR in front were faster but I am not sure they were the same grp. When I reached the site, the bike was on the left lane, we carried it to the railing because it was very dangerous with many oncoming cars and buses on a curvy descending slope right after the infamous speed breaker. Then me and a PROPEL staff (who also called for help with his hand phone) went to alert the oncoming cars to slow down and divert to the right lane. A bus almost hit a car at that time. After the PROPEL staff, a young Malay chap, managed to control the diverting the traffic, I went to see Bro Loli. I immediately recognized Bro Wazi (an ex-racer, a biker friend, white shirt with camera) who was helping the grp. I did not see any external injury, and he was still breathing. I stayed on for a while and learned that they were heading to the same direction as mine. My only guess is tank slapping (think v-stormer should know better). The speed breaker should slowed down our speed, and the curve is not very sharp.

Please enlighten me on the tank slapping.

Read many myths about tank slapping. How do you define it.

What causes it? Bike handling? Bike configuration? Rider's ability to control bike? Road condition? Surrounding condition?

Tank slapping is a rare but real phenomenon. Pls google for more info. At certain angle after hard wobbling of front tyre, the bike can go high side. That's I guess what happened to Bro Loli. The front tyre was lying on the grass near the railing and the bike was about two meter from the railing. The newspaper image is not the real picture. The bike was still in one piece although broken pieces here and there. I am posting the pictures here for you all to see the truth. The police theory might be correct a bout the pole. I hope this will clear much of the air.

For the benefit of other riders who have yet to experience tank slapping and not to jump into conclusion of what happen to the tragic accident.

Tank Slapping

Wobble, shimmy, tank-slapper,[1] speed wobble, and even death wobble are all words and phrases used to describe a quick (4 - 10 Hz) oscillation of primarily just the steerable wheel(s) of a vehicle. The rest of the vehicle remains mostly unaffected. Vehicles that can experience this oscillation include bikes, both motorcycles and bicycles, skateboards, and in theory any vehicle with a single steering pivot point and a sufficient amount of freedom of the steered wheel; this does not include most automobiles, however, coil-sprung vehicles with a track bar setup such as the Jeep WJ, XJ, ZJ, TJ, and JK with both stock and after-market suspension lifts may have this problem also. This instability occurs mostly at high speed and is similar to that experienced by shopping cart wheels and aircraft landing gear

Wobble or shimmy begins when some otherwise minor irregularity accelerates the wheel to one side. The restoring force is applied in phase with the progress of the irregularity, and the wheel turns to the other side where the process is repeated. If there is insufficient damping in the steering the oscillation will increase until system failure. The oscillation frequency can be changed by changing the forward speed, making the bike stiffer or lighter, or increasing the stiffness of the steering, of which the rider is a main component.[2] While wobble or shimmy can be easily remedied by adjusting speed, position, or grip on the handlebar, it can be fatal if left uncontrolled.[4]

Since shimmy frequency is independent of bike speed, gyroscopic effects "are clearly not essential to the phenomenon."[2] The top five influences on wobble have been found to be lateral stiffness of the front tire, steering damper, height of bike center of mass, distance of bike center of mass from rear wheel, and cornering stiffness of the front tire.[3]

An academic paper that investigated wobble through physical experimentation and computer modeling concludes: "the influence on wobble mode of front tyre characteristics, front frame inertia and chassis stiffness were shown. In particular, it shows that [by] increasing front tire inflation, stiffness chassis, and front frame inertia about steering axis and decreasing sideslip stiffness of front tire, wobble mode damping is improved, promoting vehicle stability.

Take note of the highlighted sentences. As our bike is engineered in such a way that it influence to what called "tank slapping" in 2 ways, basically the height of the center of mass and the distance of bike center of mass from rear wheel. Because of the CG is high, the bike is relatively light at high speed making the front wheel wobbling at certain speed. This happen to ALL adventure tourers (be it Varaderos, TDMs, ATs, Tigers and even GSes) as these bikes are not engineered in such a way to go at very high speed.

I believe each rider need to know of the bike full potential and at how fast the bike can go before the front wheel start to wobble slightly. Rider need to get accustomed to the bike. I've always into the idea of some of the guys in the forum to go for frequent top up sessions to 2nd link where there is the only time for you to actually test the limit of the bike's handling especially at NSH. When you go for long trips, you have actually familiarised with the bike's handling power and control.

The more you ride = the more control you get from your bike. So ride more :thumb: and ride safe :thumb:
