With a few days in hand, decided to give Laos a go.

Rode though the morning to HatYai and made it to the train station.

Paid to have the bike loaded onto the train. A bit scary, with guys manhandling the bike.

I thought they were going to drop the bike for sure.

The train was the express to Bangkok but I decided to get off at Ratchaburi - didnt fancy navigating the Bangkok trafffic.

If I thought loading the bike was scay getting it off was worse. It was precarious situation considering the platform to the train was taller than the R1 itself.

After that it was by side roads to Phitsanulok. The next day we headed west by the mountain passes, then north through Loei before we hit the Mekong which we followed for 200km to Nong Khai.

The road through the Loei was brilliant - cool with lots of corners. Route 211 along the Mekong was horrible, broken and potholed.

The next day we were in Laos. Despite reports saying otherwise we made it through the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge with minimum hassle. Took a while getting all the documentation sorted and considering all I had was a photocopied logcard I was quite relieved to get all the necessary stamps.

Rode thruogh Vientiane and headed into Vang Vieng. The roads are pretty bad - potholes and cracks. In some parts it was rough stones and nothing else. However 30km into Vang Vieng the scenery got pretty spectacular.

The following day we decided to forgo Luang Prabang and instead head to Phonsavan. Time - never enough of it. We carried along Route 13 for about 100km along narrow mountain passes and ridges, avoiding potholes, dogs, cows, pigs, chickens and the occasional turkey. Scenery was brilliant. Cloud drenched mountain peaks were our companions, and the R1 was the fastest vehicle on the road.

Dragonfly season - I had two disintegrate into my visor, several stuck in my jacket and one imprisoned by my R1. Havent checked out my airbox yet - that might reveal some surprises.

Reaching the fork we dived into Route 7 to Phonsavan. Another 70km of mountain ridges while the sky above altenated between rain and sunshine. Route 7 was a whole lot better than Route 13, less potholes and the last 50km into Phonsavan had gentle curves - good for stretching the R1's legs.

I will try to answer some of the questions.

I dont speak either Thai or Lao. I work on hand signals and pointing. That works most of the time!

I took the train to save time - essentially a day or two riding Route 41 and Route 4 up the Isthmus of Kra. However taking the train can be nerve racking. They actually wanted to send my bike separately from my train and it took a lot of talking and pointing before they decided to bum off a cub from my train and put my R1 in.

They had thin plastic ropes as anchors to hold down the bike but luckily I brought along some heavy duty straps. With the bike in gear and strapped down the R1 fared better than my nerves for the train ride.

For those who are interested it cost 1700 baht for the bike, and about 1400 for a first class sleeper. Go to Hat Yai train junction and look for the Luggage section. Its on the right as you step onto the platform next to the food stalls.

In this way its possible to reach either Chiang Mai, Vientiane or Siem Reap within 2 days of leaving Singapore: ride straight to Hat Yai, take the late afternoon train to Bangkok, then ride up to any of those destinations.

They are no legal issues that I am aware of getting into Laos - considering everything is done by the law you ought to be fine. Just hand your Import documentation as you leave Thailand. Go to the Laotian side and do the proper paperwork. When leaving Laos return the paperwork and when you reach the Thai side just complete you Import documentation again.

For Thailand is pretty straightforward. For the Laotian side its a bit tedious:

1) First park the bike and get through Immigration. Spore passport dont need visa.

2) Then you have to go to the 2nd floor of the building - thru the door on your left as you pass Immigration - and go to Room 6. Cost is 60 baht.

3) Present the lady with your log card and she will do up the proper documentation: 1 white document, 1 green document, and the permit (see pic above). Im calling the document green and white because theyre in Lao and I have no idea what they are but theyre in those colors.

4) Then its Room 8 for the Customs signature and stamp.

5) Then its back down and to the booths where the cars pass for another girl will sign and stamp the diocuments. Cost is 200 baht for the bike and 10 baht entry fee for the rider.

6) Take the documents to the Customs table where it will be sign and stamped again.

7) Then you can walk to the insurance - about 30 metres from the booths and to the right, you cant miss the sign - and get the proper insurance. Mine was 88 baht for one week.

If it sounds a bit daunting and vague dont worry - just ask the Laotian officials - they were pretty helpful.

how long does it take from hatyai to siem reap, or rather how long you took to get to BKK? Do all trains leave in the late afternoon, on a DAILY basis?

My details -

left Singapore on Saturday, 5 Aug at 3am.

Reached Hat Yai at around 4pm (local time is 3pm)

(Same day) Got the 6.05pm train to Bangkok - reaches Bangkok at 10.05am.

(Next Day) Got off at Ratchaburi at 8.30am

From there you could jump on Route 2 and be at Nong Khai - around 550km away.

Chiang Mai is north by the major roads and Siem Reap is west by major roads as well.

Its tough but possible. So leaving Saturday morning you can be at those destinations by late afternoon Sunday.
