Maxi scoots scare me (for no reason, I just find them super weird looking...) - and I already have my heart and eyes on the Bajaj Pulsar 200 for my first bike :lovestruck:

Phang, I don't think it's riduculous at all. It may sound easy to make fun of, but I understand more and more that riding isn't just about hoping on a bike and "having fun". You can't have the "fun" part without proper protection. So if one has to take time to gear up and down, well, the ride will feel better :)

I will know more when I get my bike and can experience the different possibilities, but I think I might agree with you and choose the best transportation according to where I go... Thanks for sharing !

I am more attracted by track boots because they look less bulky - and I have this idea that if a person rides a sport bike on a race track they will certainly go faster than me on my 2B slow bike so the boots must be good. (newbie logic)

Track boots are less bulky? Hmm maybe. But I find that touring boots are able to fit in better (cos they look more like normal boots).

o_O omg... a car went over your feet? That's not a stupid accident, a stupid accident is me burning my fingertip while taking a pie out of the oven, that's stupid. A car on your feet, it's not stupid, it's...scary.

Yup it went over my left foot! Because my bro in law didn't know that I was still standing outside the car. I was putting my riding gear into the rear seat. He was on the phone and thought that I was already in the car. So he drove off (thank god very slowly). I shouted at him to stop. The rear wheel was sitting my my left foot for a few seconds before he moved further forward to clear my left foot.

That is why I am very against pple doing things that could distract them from driving (e.g. SMS, phonecalls, fiddling with MP3 payers)! Concentrate on the road man!!

I was thinking... a FF + an armored jacket with back protection + 2 armored gloves + a pair of high boots + armored pants -> Where to put all this stuff if I wanna leave my bike and go shopping-do-whatever-that-will-take-more-than-15min ?

If you're just gonna do something for around 15mins, just leave them on. No point taking them off. That's what I do.

a. Don't pillion anyone EVER. And stuff everything in a giant rear box. If someone breaks into it, well, kiss around $1k goodbye.

b. Add side boxes if the above giant one isn't enough 'cause you're a giant yourself and that's what you get for being so tall: lots of gear.

c. Buy one of those "safe" bags that you can stuff and lock to the bike. Have fun putting in and taking out everything everytime, not to mention folding the damn thing. (Riding time 15min, getting ready for the non-bike-world: 30min)

d. Only use the bike to where you can either come with all your gear (friend's & family) or where you can change and store it (the office?). Or only use it for transport (go somewhere and back).

Easiest way (and I have given this much thought) is to get a chain, run it through 1 jacket sleeve and pant leg, and through the frame of your bike, lock the chain. Then COVER your bike.

By the way, yesterday (Saturday) around 9-11pm, I did a quick check on gearing while I was in Geylang area: didn't see anyone with a jacket. (Uncles with sleeves on to fight the cold don't count) Saw one rider with a full face, all with open faces. Saw 2 riders with covered shoes. Everyone else, pillions included, was wearing sandals or flip-flops. The same rider who was wearing a FF was wearing gloves.

That's it. Out of what, 20-30 bikes? Maybe more, actually. Various type of bikes: scooters, phantoms, S4, bigger bikes, cruisers. Super scary. I didn't think it would be so.. well so common for riders to not wear any gear. A lot were in t-shirts and shorts. :(

I did the same earlier in the year and found very similar results. I think it will take awhile before this catches up. Singapore has a long way to go yet.

heyy all! Just a heads up! I've started a second mass order for biking protective gear :) The prices are good, and results from the first mass order show that the items are great for its price, so do take a look at:

http://www.singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=253733

disclaimer: This is NOT a business. I've raised the prices from MO#1 because i'm going to use the excess money to get help with the sorting of items, paying for transport etc. I'm posting in here because people have started placing orders for this MO and I don't want to have them wait for months to get their order (like the first MO)! So please do take a look and drop me an email at [email protected] if you've got any queries!

Hi,

Can I check if the jackets are able to fit into a big rear box, even with the armour protections in them? My box usually contain an extra helmet and some miscellaneous stuff like bike cover, hope that someone can enlighten me on this query! :)

Posted

A 42L and bigger box will be able to hold the jacket and a helmet.

To add in the cover, will depend how u able to squeeze along the side already. Or maybe you can fold the cover till it's able to be stuff inside the helmet. :)

Anyone can ride a bike. Being a biker, is a state of mind.

But isn't it risky to leave all this gear in the box? I've read so many stories on SBF about boxes being popped open and stuff stolen.

I'm kinda trying to accept the fact that I might have to carry around my gear or just plan trips to places where I can store it (home, work, friend's house etc..).

Any advices on this? maybe cover the bike to attract less attention? Or avoid certain parking places known for their popularity among thieves, or maybe ways to thief-proof the box? (specific model of box or an alarm maybe?).

Hm.. I advice not to leave anything overnight in box. I use the box to store the gears during short stop-over when buying things etc. My box is always empty, in fact, sometimes i leave the cover wide-open (but key-way in locked position to prevent detachment of box) to air it.

Overnight isn't really a problem as the MSCP where I intend to park it is just a second away from my block's lift, so i can carry everything back to my place :)

I was more worried about 1-3h kinda parking: When I go to the movies, or to meet friends over a meal or drinks, that kind of things. What do you guys think ?

why is glove so impt? see everyone must have them on. personally i don't like gloves as it feels like a no grip like tt

Simple.

Try rubbing your palms gently on the tarmac and image 100x the amount of force if you fall from your bike. Then you'll understand why we wear leather gloves.

When you crash at the e-brake of the driving school with the cotton gloves, and see what happens to your gloves and hands, you'll come back the next lesson with leather gloves.

Let me tell you a true story. I use to wear glove when riding. So there was one day when my brother say use my bike and he pillion me. So i tot aiyah he so experience and somemore im the pillion so no need wear glove lor.

BIG Mistake. We went down.... and i fall before so i knw that its not good to "roll" yourself and not knowing which direction and where you fall to. Thus after 2 rolls i quickly get myself on knees and palm. Skid all the way in that position and then you knw how it feels.

Lesson learn is;

1) You dun plan an accident.

2) Safety gear safe you from getting sore when you bath.

Imagine you are unable to use your hands for 3 weeks. Even simple eating using fork and spoon.

Rest is up to you bro. If its not important then why would they sell it and why izit so ex? THINK....

Yeah, gloves are not just for grips. It's more of a protective gear. If you fall, your instinct is to break fall with your palms, when you slide, you tend to use your hands again to slow and stop the slide. Leather ones can take the friction better.

People tend to neglect gears for pillon. Or rather I notice, sgeans tend to not gear up as much as you see in US. SG hot.. what about they touring inter-state across Arizona Desert?

Yea thats why i wore the minimum. No doubt i dun plan to fall. But you can't plan an accident as well.

lol.... wth bro, u shuld put 'em on when eva u ride. juz get urself a mesh rubber knuckle gloves(Rs Taichi or Komine gloves). it looks so cool & it grips & looks more protective. i can't see myself riding without wearing gloves, ff helmet, mesh jackets & riding shoes. i felt lost & naked without it. its a must for me no matter how far i go.

i was so happy with my new rs taichi riding shoes. it cost me at $140 at MotoWorld. it was light & lookalike basketball shoe to me. i'm not sure if i got a wrong choice coz i wuld prefer a waterproof instead of mesh but i got a mesh instead. i like white in colour so mesh was in my favour. use to hv a sigma touring boots but lost at my workplace. :sian:

Been riding around and notice some of bikes (even not all) do wear safety riding vest.No matter what brand it is, the main objective of own safety is there.Wish all bikers wear the safety attire especially those newbies and YP.Much better if all bikers club n group organise safety riding on their own and have some kind of safety riding contest to enhance the main reason here ;)

Well, some people are just want to taste the tarmac, why stop them? I've given trying to preach gearing up to people who won't take it in. They just keep harping about the heat, the looks/comments "others" issued to them, the stowage, million of reasons to make you sound like false guru proclaiming the world is going to end.

I wear myself can already, and if I got a pillon, I make sure I have an extra set of armour, gloves of leather material and helmet with chin bar.

I would prefer a full-height, full-leather boot that covers the shin. But anyway, your RS Taichi is better than normal shoes (working shoes) or slippers lah .. :)
