Wah! Engine Ice really not bad! After the overhaul at FM, Ah Seng poured for me some unknown brand green colour coolant. It raised my temp till around 80deg even on a cold night. Just now I left for work at 2pm, under a scorching sun, the temp did not go above 72 on the stock meter. Only when I entered KPE from Kallang to ECP did the temp went up to 79 deg. Pretty decent stuff. I cant wait to try it at night and see what the readout is like. :D

Just for the sake of discussion, could a lowered temperature be bad for the bike?

Just wondering - could a lowered coolant temperature mean that heat transmission from cylinder to coolant is reduced?

To shunt heat away from the engine, heat must be absorbed by the coolant, then moved to the radiator, where it dissipates. Naturally, the more heat you can move and quickly at that, the better.

But as the temperature sensor is located directly above the cylinder, it only measures the water temp at a location closest to the cylinder, the source of maximum heat output.

To really know if our coolants are doing their jobs, we should have a temp sensor near the radiator, immediately at the outlet side. This will allow us to monitor how much heat has been absorbed, and how much has been lost through the radiator.

Ok, I know many of you are falling asleep at this point, so bear with me.

Right now, those still awake when reading to this point are asking, "So what has this to do with efficiency of the coolant? Are you blowing smoke up our asses again, Lawrence?"

No, my point is - If the water temp closest to the cylinder is much lower with a new coolant than the previous one, could it mean the coolant is not absorbing as much heat from the cylinder?

Less heat absorption means the heat is suppressed inside the cylinder. Is that bad?

Yes, it's bad.

So how do we tell if a coolant is really working well? I'd think we should be looking at high temperature fluctuations depending on various riding conditions.

Engine Ice contains anti-freeze, which is supposed to prevent the coolant from freezing in winter, sub-zero climates. They aren't as efficient as coolants without anti-freeze, such as Redline's WaterWetter and Maxima's Cool-Aide, both of which I have used and found extremely effective.

"Pppfftt! Lawrence is going on about his bullsh!t tests and experiments again..."

No wait! I can prove this! After trying out many different coolants, I find that Redline WaterWetter and Maxima Cool-Aide both run HOTTER when I'm idling, or crawling through slow conjested traffic. But once traffic clears (or I split lanes and blast away), and my revs are above 6,000rpm and speed above 70kph, the temperature drops drastically. From 85-89 degrees during the crawl, to 68-72 when going fast.

And on the track, at wide open throttle and full speed ahead, 65-67 degrees.

However, when using coolants with anti-freeze, my temp range is usually 72-79 when crawling, and 68-70 when going fast. From this, I infer that the anti-freeze coolants retain heat in the engine instead of moving it to the radiator to be dissipated.

Ok, so whether or not you agree with me on this, you will have to draw your own conclusion. :cheeky:

So, who wanna try and hook up a temp sensor to the radiator, put it side by side with the readout from our meters? At least this will give u an accurate reading and once and for all clear any doubts about what coolant to use. That's the only sensible thing to do to test out coolants.

I think I can get my hands on those thermal sensors with an LCD display used by computer enthusiast to check on their CPU, HDD temperatures. Wanna give that a try??

Heh heh... ok. Since I'm changing to silicone coolant hoses, can sacrifice the current stock rubber ones - cut a hole in it for the sensor...

Uhh, can pass the hose to you... You conduct the experiment and publish your findings? :D

We look forward to your updates!

You sponsor hose and enough cool-aid (premix or not, up to you). I sponsor my piston and Engine Ice. All we need now is for someone with a spare block on standby incase :p

Eh really lah! I been looking at the proper rheobus with a temperature sensor! I remember using 1 last time for my uber geek pc!

It has 4 temp sensors so we can place it in 4 different areas altogether to do a through check. I bet the stupid rheobus is just running on 12v so we can actually hook it up nicely with the wiring to the headlamp or something.. :D

Lawrence,

2 very excellent posts.

Just want to give my own opinion.

Fadil, like i told you before, I suspect that your temp sensor might be faulty. Your readings of 80something degrees at night is way off. For your info, i think i'm using the same coolant as you.

My readings are quite alright. Daytime, normal riding is 68 to 74. Only during idling it slowly climbs to max 80-82. Once i start riding, it drops down rapidly. At night, usually about 66 to 70 max. However at track last time, i vaguely remember my temperature being in the 70s range.

Agreeing with what Lawrence said, I too dont hold Engine Ice in that high regard. I've had feedback before saying that when u keep it still for sometime, the additives sink to the bottom.

Currently because of my coolant leaking issue, i'm damn irritated. But trust me, even a cheapo coolant should do the job.

Will wait for further feedback from you. From what i know, Engine Ice loses its powers after a few weeks.

thats becos for rs125 08 and 09 the cdi use is not the old type cdi . . . they are all using piaggio cdi . . . thats why on the site they already warn it will not fit in for those with piaggio cdi . . .

yes bro base on ur bike pic it should be rs125 09 so IT WILL NOT FIT . . .

Whoa.... why is mine running very high... i don't think mine ever run less than 70 when I ride... it's always at hight 70s and low 80s and sometimes even up to 90 +... is there anything wrong with my sensor or probably someother things

You're better off going to Weda/FJT to purchase whatever u need in terms of sprockets and rollers. Stock sprockets cost MUCH cheaper. :)

Ideal has afew Renthal sprockets. But size 41. Better pickup,

Does your bike have coolant? Check coolant reservoir? And what exhaust u are using? Milo Kongs are 'hot'. High temperatures during normal riding. But.. should hit 90 unless u are stuck in a jam for ages.
