09' rs 125 new bike is around 12-14k depends on insurance. Bought mine at 14.7k about a month ago.

The last time i went to check out a new RS125 at HLC cycle, it was retailing at around $12K+ without insurance. And there is no fixed price on used rs125 as it really have to depends on condition of bike, number of years left or even modifications done to it. Whether u can find such a gem in the ocean, is purely based on luck and your knowledge about bikes. For your reference, i got my 2004 Aprilia at 2.6k (a very very good deal) which is running perfectly fine.

 

Just fyi, aprilia insurance aint cheap. I'm a 22 with less than 1yr riding experience, NTUC quoted my $820+ for solely third party (WITHOUT fire and theft).

Been using the woodruff key for years and had no issues. According to 1 mech, it will cause the piston to explode. Go figure.

 

Yes, and I concur with that statement, because personally I have seen the damage done to the piston n conrod by the Woodruff key advancing the ignition by 8 degrees. This means that at low revs, the spark plug is firing before the piston is at Top Dead Centre position. The exploding charge is pushing down while the piston is still on its way UP to TDC Position. The opposing forces apply a lot of strain on the piston, rings, and conrod. I've explained this many times to u but you've always been unable to grasp this concept that Eric Gorr wrote about.

 

Perhaps only a person who knows how a 2-stroke engine works is able to understand the true merits of ignition advancement n retardation.

 

Just because you've used the Woodruff for years without problems does not mean that someone else may not be affected.

 

I've seen the pistons that are melted through with a hole through the crown (described as a blow-hole meltdown in Eric Gorr's book- Forward Motion) caused by ignition advancement. And just because u haven't worked on enough bikes to see it happen doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

 

I've known u for years and while we've picked each others' brains n sparred intellectually many times over the years (contributing loads of great ideas in the process), I've never actually physically seen your brain. But that doesn't mean that your brain doesn't exist. Hahaha

I live in pain, every day. My shoulder's cartilage is gone; my right knee's ACL is gone, I cannot squat without struggling to get up; my right elbow, both ankles, right hip, wrists, and back have been damaged by years of cycling, taekwondo, boxing, triathlons, and a bar fight or two. I've broken a few bones in my time. Every day, I awaken to a world of pain, where my creaking joints protest and beg for release. If I allowed myself to take a break, I'd never get out of bed.

 

Anyway, this is the 2nd time I'm running with a broken leg, so I figured I should be used to it. The first time was during NSF when I wanted to book out for the weekend and the only way was to get gold for my IPPT before Saturday. Pain can be a great motivator. I ran 9:04min with a shin fracture.

True. But given that we live in the same climate and weather conditions, ur settings could be used as a benchmark or a starting point for people with a similar set up =D

 

Ok lawrence u can ignore that comment. Its just another one of my countless(both blatant and subliminal) attempts at fishing out ur top secret settings =P For now i shall just work slowly on obtaining my perfect tuning.

 

Btw i would like to disagree with what u said about open pod filters not being practical for daily use. In the past 4 days ive been on open pod, there were points of time when the bike revs smoothly and riding it is a joy, especially so since i love the bassy sound of an airbox-less bike. Again this is because as u have duly explained, an i have personally experienced, the open pods are extremely susceptible to weather changes. For me, im a well oiled made in Singapura drone, leaving for work at 830 and going home at 1800 every day. So the weather condition is somewhat the same everyday at those times(unless it rains of course) so if i can get a state of tune perfect for those weather conditions, i think i'll be happy enough. To me those moments where i drag the bike and the revs go up smoothly coupled with that beautiful bassy sound is gona make it hard for me to switch back to using the airbox. Bt who knows. Ive only been on it for 4 days. Still got alot of testing to come =)

 

With regard to pod filters. Here's some information to set you thinking.

 

Pod filters are used on race machines as the engines are heavily modified, and are prone to suffocation on airboxes. Pod filters are then used as a replacement as the airflow is much greater compared to the flow in an airbox. However, with that said, pod filters only work best at speed as this will allow cold air entering the engine. On our busy Singapore streets, the number of cars on the road limits our ability to travel at speed, and at the same time, increases the ambient temperature for pod filters to have any real benefit on combustion.

 

Airboxes on the other hand, provide ample insulation against your engine heat, and the ambient heat. As we do not travel at speeds above 200kph, this does not have an adverse affect on your engine's ability to breathe in any way. As a matter of fact, the resonance created within the airbox actually helps the combustion during normal riding. Providing you with more torque at low end speeds compared to pod air filters, which may lead to slight leaness on lower revs. A high-flow drop filter in is actually recommended on street vehicles.

 

To have a better feel of whether your vehicle's capabilities, Android users can download a free dyno program called aDyno, and use this on their vehicles. I have used this on both my car and motorcycle, and it has given me reliable and consistent results on my vehicle's performance. This will give you hard data if your vehicle just feels powerful, or is REALLY generating power.

I believe what Lawrence is trying to say, is that the woodruff key, while enhancing your sparking and combustion, may cause greater wear and tear compared to the standard linear firing. Depending upon your tuning and setup, there is a possibility of the engine blowing due to leaness, however, if you're confident of your tuning parameters, there is nothing much to worry about.

 

An example would be that if a piston is rated to have a lifespan of 100k km of distance run. Using a woodruff key on your machine may mean that you may have to change your piston at 75k -80k km of distance run.. Doesn't necessarily mean that using a woodruff key will cause a serious detrimental hazard on your machine. =)

 

Of course there will be instances where accidents happen when an incompetent mechanic decides to work on your machine without having any real knowledge. So, do make sure that when a woodruff key is installed, it's done by someone who knows his/her stuff.. I've seen engines blowing because of advance ignition and firing. Not a nice sight in cars, less on bikes.

Am using the RCS15 and it's good enough for our bikes as long as u have good, properly bedded in pads for the right usage, and keep your braking lines serviced regularly.

 

Braking power is precise n progressive. I've pulled 2 stoppies that saved my skin twice so far.

But u have to admit, $200 is cheap. If it was a defective set, u only need to include the $90 servicing to change the piston seal, total cost will still be under $400.
